The New York Times article “What Experts Know About Men Who Rape,” author Heather Murphy focuses on the commonalities in the men who commit sexual assaults. Murphy states that the similarities don’t fall into traditional demographic categories. Studies find that men begin assaulting early in life, may associate with others who commit sexual violence, and typically deny that they have raped women even though they admit to having nonconsensual sex. Identifying these traits could help stop future assaults.

In 2014, Buzzfeed News came out with an article titled, “Sexual Assault Survivors Answer The Question “What Were You Wearing When You Were Assaulted?”, was a huge headline a couple years ago. In response, many of the survivors answered with responses such as pants and a plain t-shirt or a sweater and with sweatpants. That just shows the simplest clothes can attract a potential assaulter. For many years sexual assault has been a huge social topic amongst many individuals, especially with young females in school settings. In which many females are the ones who are blamed for being assaulted due to them wearing “provocative” attire or being in area around the wrong “timing”. Sexual abuse is a very sensitive and serious issue in United States, yet as well as other counties. Although we all live in a modern civilize world, we hear more and more about this unpleasant affairs happening all the time, and it seem like these problems are only increasing in every country. Women and little girls have been the most common prey for sexual abuse cases due to the fact that women are weaker and easily taken advantage of. Rape and sexual violence/assault against humankind are among the most pervasive forms of violence. High prevalence of sexual violence was initially reported in research from Europe and Northern America. However, other continents are growingly reporting alarming prevalence of sexual violence. Based on the World Health Organization’s (2005) report on multi-country study of women’s health and domestic violence against women, approximately 6% to 59% of women globally report forced or attempted sexual intercourse (by partners or non-partners) in their lifetime. While much research has focused on sexual violence against women and children, various studies have since reported on sexual violence against men.(1)

Despite the efforts that have been made to curb sexual assaults, statistics show that sexual assaults in college campuses still occur (Lee, Spring 2003). In fact, the facts are even scarier, showing that one in every four ladies in campuses have been victims or near victims of sexual assault (Lee, spring 2003). Interestingly, 1 in 12 men in college have been involved in sexual assault, but they felt that their actions were not illegal. Perhaps, this ability of the perpetrators to justify their actions based on their own perspectives may be largely to blame for the increasing occurrence of sexual assault. Under the criminal law, sexual assault refers to the nonconsensual, unlawful and intentional sexual contact by one party of another person’s body. As such, it includes acts ranging from forcible rape to sexually touching another person’s body without their consent, even with clothes on. The peculiar situation with sexual assault in campuses is that often, the victim and the perpetrator are known to each other thus it may not raise much alarm at first (Lee, Spring 2003). In fact, most sexual assaults are reported to have taken place during or after dates, which in a way explains the reason why most perpetrators feel like their actions were justified. Still, the law is very clear on the inviolability of other people’s private space, especially sexually, and as such, there should be minimal tolerance, if at all, of any inappropriate sexual contact. Rape is described as a sexual assault. According to Mills terms (1959), it is a social issue that affects every member of society. Nevertheless, it is a social harm that directly affects a multitude of women each year and in various ways, impacts approximately every woman. According to Edwards et al. (2011), 18% to 25% of the women in the U.S are reported to experience either completed or attempted rape in their lifetimes. It is also reported that 82% of all child victims are female (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2000). Conversely, only 1 in every 33 men experience completed or attempted rape in their lifetime (U.S. Department of Justice, 2003). The reason why I choose this topic is because as an African Canadian, University student, and a young woman I am able to see the issues that are happening in today world about sexual violence and see how relates to me. This paper will allow me to have a better understand how society views sexual violence and what is being done about it. Though, there are many laws and regulations, having an understanding of how a victim is viewed in a justice system and how our culture has influenced sexual violence.

Violence against women is a hidden problem. People have knowledge of it and of how much damage it causes. However, nothing is done about it. People don’t take into account the multiple negative effects it causes on the victims; less do they try to take the issue into hands and try to take action into it. Even though this widespread problem has evolved and has gained international recognition as a threatening situation for women, there is still a long way ahead to fight for a world where women’s rights are treated equally as men and women do not have to suffer in silence due to the many acts of violence committed against them that threaten not only their health but also their lives.
