An STD/STI is any disease or infection that can be sexually transmitted. “The infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites.” ( ) Currently, there are more than 20 STDs in the world. STDs can affect both men and women, with varying symptoms.
There are some preventative methods for STDs, but not engaging in sexual activity is the best way to prevent STDs. Condoms, if used properly, can also be a way to prevent the spread of STDs. Topical microbicides are another barrier method, “that can be applied to the vagina or rectum that kills or disables the microbes that cause STDs.” ( ) Barrier methods protect against most STDs and can significantly lower a person’s risk for getting one. Most STDs can stay inside the body

According to the Center of Disease control, “about 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.” ( ) HPV can cause genital warts and some cancers. “HPV can cause cervical, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, throat, and tonsil cancer.” ( ) Some causes of HPV can go away on their own and not cause any health problems. There is no cure for the virus itself, but there are treatments for the symptoms. One preventative measure for HPV is a vaccine to protect against cancers and other health problems caused by HPV. The vaccine should be given to boys and girls at age eleven or twelve. This vaccine is called Gardasil. The vaccine protects against the four most common strains of …show more content…
Along with most of the other STDs someone with HSV can remain asymptomatic. Even though the individual may be asymptomatic, they can still transmit the disease to someone else. There are two types of herpes; type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Type one is oral which is a cold sore on the mouth and type 2 is genital herpes. There are multiple prescriptions for treatment which include; acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. These medications are antiviral medications. They do not cure the disease, but if started early enough during a breakout they can decrease the duration and the pain. There are ways to prevent transmitting or receiving HSV. Do not kiss anyone with a cold sore, do not share silverware or cups, and do not have oral sex from an infected
organisms that include viruses and bacteria which are transmitted primarily through sexual intercourse. Modes of transmission also include non-sexual activities such as needles sharing during drug use, blood transfusions and vertical transmission from mother to child. STD surveillance and prevention measures are often geared towards adolescent and young adult populations, thus leaving the older adult population unrecognized and vulnerable.
2) If STD s are left untreated they can lead to infertility and even death. Since there are many types of STD s they all have similar but not the exact same effects. For example HPV/ genital warts has a very bad long term side effect, cancer in your reproductive system, but it has very similar short term effects such as a burring feeling when urinating like Chlamydia. HIV can lead to AIDS and the both basically have the same effects,
Genital Warts is the most common STI. It is an infection of the genital and anal area with the HPV virus. It can also be infected in the throat and lips. Treatment can be Creams, freezing, surgery and laser treatment. There are no long term serious
On the other hand, the causes of STD’s are probably growing by the numbers. Almost 1 million people die of AIDs/HIV each year. Due to recent history of STD’s the sickness was only in one part of the
HPV Virus is responsible for more than 70% of vulvar and vaginal cancers and 90% of cervical and anal cancers.Statistics reveal 33,200 HPV related cancers are reported in the United States each year(CDC,2014). There is no treatment for HPV virus infections as the natural immunity will clear the virus from the body over time. However there are ways to prevent the infection by preventive measures like condoms and vaccines to prevent cervical cancer in high risk individuals. There are two HPV vaccines mainly Gardasil and Cervarix which provide protection against HPV infection. HPV vaccines are recommended for boys and girls in the ages of 11 to 12 years as well as for
HPV is caused by direct skin contact, and also can be sexually transmitted. There is no direct treatment for HPV, but there are treatments for the health problems the virus can cause. Syphilis is a rare sexually transmitted disease that causes serious health problems and complications if left untreated. This disease has stages and many symptoms. Both genders can contract it, but it can be cured and certainly prevented.
Now that I have talked about how people can protect themselves from STD's, let's talk about the different kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. There are eight common disease on the rise which are stated in the book titled, Straight Talk About Sexually Transmitted Diseases, written by Michael Brodman, John Thacker, and Rachel Kranz. It lists the top eight to be: Chlamdia, Gonorrhea, Genital Warts, Genital Herpes, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Hepatitis, Syphilis, and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). I'm sure everyone has heard of the most publicized one, AIDS, and I am sure most people have heard of some of the other ones, and I am also sure that a lot of people are not educated about theses diseases. I am going to talk a little about each one so people can see that sex does not only mean enjoyment, or getting pregnant, it also means there's
Also, most STIs do not have symptoms and it might seem like you don’t have an STI. The risk will be higher since there are no symptoms and passing it on will almost be certain. Some of the symptoms of various sexual transmitted infections are vaginal and penile discharge, ulcers around the genitals and even pelvic pain. There are numerous bacteria and viruses that can cause sexually transmitted infections and can lead to chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. There are also viral STIs which include genital warts and genital herpes. These are usually spread by sex or in contact with skin, but some STIs can spread by blood which is contaminated with such STIs. Although some STIs are treatable and can be cured such as syphilis or gonorrhea, others are not like herpes and
A STI (sexually transmitted infection) refers to more than 25 infectious organisms passed from person to person primarily through sexual contact. The term form STI’s has changed throughout history, from venereal diseases to sexually transmitted diseases to sexually transmitted infections. STI is supposedly a less judgmental than previous terms. Sexually transmitted infections do not have an agenda of a certain race, ethnicity, or gender to affect. Some STI’s can be cured and some require a lifetime of treatment.
Currently, reported sexually transmitted infections are at a record high in this day and age. STI reports are getting higher and higher each year, new cases grow higher every day, especially in young adults and teens. For example, during 2014-2015 the rate for syphilis increased 18.1% among men and 27.3% among women (“Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2015” 31). And although STI’s are completely preventable, they are still being spread like wildfire from person to person. STI’s are an important part of health, as many STDs affect the overall wellness of our body’s function and ability to protect itself from other infections and diseases. Certain STD's are even fatal, both directly and indirectly.
We can also discuss other physical effects, like increasing the risk of having a Sexual Transmitted Disease. For example, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, syphilis or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Due to the forced sexual assault, victims can also face painful intercourse and damage in the vagina or anus. The victims are typically concerned about their physical health and security after the rape. This concern regularly leads the victims to self-harm themselves. They feel that having physical pain is the way to relieve the tension that the psychological effect is causing in their heads.
What is an STD? I asked myself this two days ago. An STD is a Sexually Transmitted Disease. I chose this topic because I was unsure of what it was and you hear about it a lot. You mainly hear things about STDs on a Medical Website or TV show. They put stuff like STDs on their websites and shows to show kids how harmful it can be and what it is so they do not get freaked out.
