Communication is the process of exchanging information in such a way that mutual understanding is achieved between two or more people regarding work-related issues. In general terms, it is a psychological process of sharing information to achieve common understanding between ourselves and others (Dunn, 2015). The process of communicating to the community, stakeholders, partners and San Franciscans in order to achieve desired outcome is one that is not novel to the SFDPH. The SFDPH has to communicate public health issues or an outbreak of epidemic to the community as large, and it is important for the channel via which communication flow to be as effective as possible in order to avoid misinterpretation of the message. In the research study which we will further discuss …show more content…
Moreover, SJI embodied SFDPH mission of wanting to reduce or preventable disease and injury from the community. The “clinic uses a harm reduction approach, with an emphasis on engaging sex workers in addition to identifying and reducing the individual and community level risks associated with sex work” (Cohan et al., 2006). We would like to add that the services rendered by the SJI mirrors that of SFDPH, but only slightly differs in the sense that, SJI does not only provide primary care services, HIV and STI screening and treatment, transgender health, harm reduction and peer counselling, psychiatric evaluation and management, it also provides acupuncture, massage, support groups, food, clothing, needle exchange, and the distribution of safer sex supplies by clinic staff along with offering HIV testing to sex workers in the setting of street and venue based outreach (Cohan et al.,
The three distinctive features that categorize this theory are: (1) “There is no sender nor receiver”, meaning that everyone creates and shares their beliefs and opinions through a participating process. Community organizations, schools, professional associations, and churches are the institutions that participate in this process as well as individuals and groups. (2) The information being shared of the individual’s perceptions and interpretations are emphasized through communication. With this, individuals are encouraged to share their beliefs and opinions through an agreement on common meanings and mutual understanding. (3) “Two or more participants are involved in this horizontal communication”, meaning that all participants are equal and their goal is to all reach a mutual understanding that may persuade a group’s action (Schiavo, p. 42-43). With these three distinctive components we are able to understand this theory and apply it towards an actual Public Health and Environmental Communication
Communication is a process of transferring information from one person or from a group of people to the other. Communication can also be defined as a way and form of passing or receiving a message. People communicate to express or share a concern and allow the passing of message. By not communicating can limit the people’s ability to connect with each other. For instance care worker to care users and other professionals in the care setting environment. People communicate so that they can understand the needs of others and it ensures ways of building trust and resolving conflicts. Communication is a two way process that enables sharing of experience.
The ‘Communication cycle’ is a frequently used theory of communication. It was originally established by Charles Berners in 1965. In 1967, a man named Michael Argyle claimed that human communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, and responding to each other’s verbal and non-verbal messages. It was then improved in 1972 by Argyle’s. The model of the ‘communication cycle’ makes it apparent that to ensure effective communication, it has to be a two-way process. As well as transmitting messages to others in a precise way, health care professions must be able to react to both verbal and non-verbal feedback. Therefore, operational communication has to involve determination from both sides in the communication cycle.
Lynn Everson’s (2014) presentation on prostitution and drug use within Spokane, was inspirational, and emphasized that all human beings are worthy of a healthy lifestyle, and deserve to be treated with care and respect. Everson works for the Needle Exchange program through Spokane Regional Healthy, and despite harsh criticism of the program she continues to be a strong ally, and advocate for the prostitutes and illegal drug users of Spokane. She has successfully connected to this population by providing unconditional support to those in need, and handing out free condoms and clean needles. Everson’s ultimate goal is to keep individuals healthy, and lower the risk of HIV and AIDS. The universal message is that individuals who are involved in prostitution and drug use, are human beings, and have the right to be safe in their daily lives, despite many individuals not believing this is a population that is worthy of rights.
As a manager of a large residential service and working with a varied range of groups and individuals, communication is a vital part of how we care and support the people we work with. Communication affects my work setting in many ways, with the service user, their families, friends, social workers, counsellors, support services and medical professionals that we work with. The way that this can be done is in person, body language, telephone calls, text messaging, emails, group work, literature and written correspondence.
Today our community is presented with a problem that will require communication between several internal and external avenues to help resolve the water contamination in the Eugene-Springfield area. I am Shellie Cobbs, Director of the Regional Emergency Management Office, and I will be addressing the media on the procedures to be used in running the crisis communication efforts in response to the contaminated water. A water contamination event poses a unique opportunity to work with diverse populations to effectively convey important health messages ("Contamination," 2008, p. 1).
The Oxford Dictionary defines communication as “The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium ”. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour . The Collins Dictionary defines it as the imparting or exchange of information, ideas, or feelings . The Business Dictionary’s definition of communication paints a bigger picture of the act, defining it as a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange (encode-decode) information, news, ideas and feelings, but also create and share meaning . With these in mind, it is easy to define communication as the giving, receiving or exchanging of information, opinions or ideas so that the message is completely understood by everybody involved . In Health and Social Care, Communication is extremely important to ensure that the right message is passed on to the right person in the right manner, based on their needs and preference, to prevent misunderstanding and to maximize on the smooth operation of the organisation ultimately to foster a save environment for all the persons involved, service users and providers. To help understand the concept of communication and how it works better, various scholars have developed theories of communication.
It is important to also note that the staff does not discriminate based on race, sex or gender. Their mission is to offer many services to individuals within the community to create a “stigma free” community. There are numerous services that are offered by S.A.A.F. S.A.A.F. offers HIV testing services on a community and individual level; those include community presentations, prevention programs, peer counselors and even weekly support groups for HIV/AIDS patients or their families to attend. S.A.A.F Services also include Case management, Complementary therapies, medication assistance and access to substance abuse treatment7. As a way to target the part of the HIV/AIDS population who cannot provide these services for themselves. S.A.A.F offers transportation, food assistance, and housing assistance to those who are
How we communicate effects everything we do. Whether talking to patients and family members, speaking in a team meeting, or talking with our children’s teacher at a conference, communication is how we learn information, teach information and express our concerns. With this paper I will discuss; the definitions of healthcare communication, the relevancy of effective personal healthcare communication with other healthcare professionals, clients, and patients, the relevancy of effective professional healthcare
Communication is “the process of relaying information between or among people by the use of words, letters, symbols, or body language” (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, p. 381). Communication is a two- way process; the message conveyed by the sender needs to be heard and understood by the receiver. It is important for “leaders to communicate regularly and consistently with staff” (Shifflet & Moyer, 2010, p. 252). Some
Effective communication is a vital component in any organization and it is essential to ensuring that all staff members are fulfilling their job duties. When there are barriers to communication
Communication is the conveyance and flow of ideas from one person to another. The exchange of information takes place through letters, words, symbols and nonverbal behaviors. It involves the transmission of ideas from the sender to the receiver. Communication is effective only if the receiver fully understands the transmitted information. Many problems and failures occur in organizations due to poor communication. Objective and goals fail due to misunderstandings in the organization. Effective communication provides a chain of understanding to all participants in the organizational framework. It promotes the flow of information both vertically and horizontally.
Communication is a necessity when you are working almost any job. When you are working with the public, the people in a community you must be able to not only communicate your own point
The shame surrounding sex work is immense. Most will say that sex workers are lawless, immoral, home wreckers. In reality, sex workers are just normal, everyday people; but of course, with a more controversial job. “Sex workers are real people. We’ve had complicated experiences and complicated responses to those experiences.” The risks associated with becoming a sex worker are insanely high, including the risk of contracting HIV or AIDS, being raped, being physically or sexually abused, as well as countless others. Female sex workers are thirteen and a half percent more likely to have Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In Asia that statistic reaches up to almost thirty percent. Sex workers are also exposed to high levels of sexual abuse, sex workers have up to a seventy five percent chance of experiencing sexual violence at some point in their careers as well as up to a fifty five percent chance of sexual violence in a given year. Although it goes against the morals of many, sex work should be decriminalized in order to maintain the health of our nation. Although this may sound counterintuitive, this would be a large step in the right direction. In the “TED Talks” titled “The Laws That Sex Workers Really Want”, Juno Mac speaks about why sex work should be decriminalized. She explains why certain approaches to dealing with sex work have not worked and why they did not work.
Communication can be conveyed in a plethora of different ways, whether it is a debatable topic between individuals a group of individuals, a problem or issue discussed in a relationship, or every day conversation between friends. Regardless of the situation, the information must be communicated, and perceived, accurately in order for the discussion to yield the intended result. According to “What is Communication?” (2013), “the discipline of communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media” (para 1). Information can be transferred by using numerous different communication methods such as verbal communication, written
