I had my moments of success and happiness when I was able to help someone along and see how appreciative they were. There were also times that were saddening and uncomfortable. When visiting rooms, I did encounter people who were losing grip on their mental and physical abilities. I felt a heaviness because even though they were taken care of, there wasn’t that could be done to make them better. It was inspiring seeing nurses and family members continuing to care for them and keep dignity.

Being a nurse not only means compassion, dedication, and intelligence, but the profession also requires endurance, personal sacrifice, and the need for continuous education. I have learned that nurses are some of the most caring and selfless people that anyone will ever meet. Nurses are more than willing to complete challenging tasks and care for others in a way that the majority of people are unwilling to. I am driven to bring all of these qualities into my role as a future nurse practitioner, which is why I am committed to pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Nursing is a very wonderful career choice. However, it is very demanding and requires a lot of time and energy. Nurses have a vast array of amazing responsibilities. They help patients overcome illness and they also help with the beautiful birth of a new born baby. Each day as a Hospice Nurse I touch lives. I cannot imagine a job more suitable for me. Each work day I make a difference in someone’s life. No one can die for us, but we don’t have to die alone; and, that is why I became a hospice nurse. Every day is different, presents new challenges, and always touches my heart. It’s beautiful when talent, and passion come together to make a difference.

Going into this job shadowing experience I did not expect to get hands on experience the way I did on some days. On some days I got to go in patients rooms and interact and make conversation with the patient. The nurse guided me, and showed me what exactly her day was like and what she was going to do with the patient that day. Some patients were better off than others which was very sad to see but is also reality. Once I get a job in this field I have to realize that.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to witness something as interesting as a c-section while shadowing. It was really neat that I got to see every step of the process from the beginning of the surgery to post-surgery recovery. Witnessing this procedure showed me how many things nurses are truly responsible for with each and every patient. I learned so much from this experience. It is really neat that I have been able to witness both a vaginal and c-section birth and now know what each process is like for a nurse.

Whenever people are sick or have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, nurses are always there to comfort them. Since I was young, I have always had the overwhelming desire to help people in a healthcare setting. Observing the nurse anesthetist (CRNA) in the OR was an eye-opening experience in which I was honored to participate in through an internship, and I knew right away that that’s what I wanted to be. Whomever came into the hospital with pain or in need of a procedure left feeling as mentally and physically pain free as possible, and this was inspiring to me as I wish to provide that for patients as well. Furthermore, I would like to be able to be an advocate, support system, and caring hand for patients when they don’t have anyone else to turn to.
