While many high school students believe Shakespeare is not relevant today, I believe Shakespeare and his writings are relevant because they are a good influence and they bring people and countries closer together while expanding the reader’s vocabulary.

Shakespeare once wrote, “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” (Hamlet, 3. 1. 64). This is to be considered one of Shakespeare’s most famous and used quotes. Though Shakespeare was alive and wrote many decades before our time, students are still subjected to using his works. This leaves people with the question, why? William Shakespeare’s works are still used today due to his universal themes, uncanny ability to take ideas and turn them into new and captivating wonders, and amazingly rich language.

Many students often ask why we still study Shakespeare at school. Shakespeare is some 'amazing' poet and playwright who died a few hundred years ago. We know the popular classics like 'Macbeth', the ambitious Thane who snaked his way to the top of the pecking order by killing those closest to him. Though the answer to the question is quite simple. Shakespeare is valued in schools because he is a vital part of the English language. It is believed that by studying Shakespeare, students will achieve a balance of both modern and classic literature. You may think that Shakespeare is only for English but Shakespearean texts teach us values and about human nature. But what is it about 'Macbeth' that is valued in schools?

Not only is his work used for entertainment, it is considered one of the most staple forms of English education in schools around the world. In the American school systems, curriculum for High School English and even sometimes college literature, require that students read Shakespeare's plays. This meaning that he used a form of writing that was over a thousand years old. Audiences still love his plays because he appeals to everyone.
