There are multiple reasons that led Europe to rise out of the dark ages. One of the factors that caused Europe to be successful once again is gaining knowledge from foreign developed civilizations. European travelers were introduced to new inventions,spices,ideas,education/literature and many other influences from the east. The invention of literature had an impact to the Europeans society because there was little information available and so literature was a main cause that ended the dark
The middle ages are often identified as the Dark Age because of the Black Death, invasions by the Barbarians, and because of lack of enlightenment for the common people. A plague most likely originating from Asia spread throughout Europe. Towns and
When Christopher Columbus accidentally discovered America, while trying to convert Indians to Christianity, he helped form the continent it is today. To Europe this was huge. Another huge landmass, WOW! It all came to be this way thanks to Columbus, trying to explore. When Europeans heard about the American products they were deeply interested. It changed what they used in their everyday life in a positive way. Using those products, Europe had more goods to trade. As Europe traded these goods, they got new ideas starting the Renaissance, where arts and culture flourished and people became educated. Being smarter brought Europe from a Dark Age to a Golden
The middle ages are often identified as the Dark Age because of the Black Death, invasions by the Barbarians, and because of lack of enlightenment for the common people. A plague most likely originating from Asia spread throughout Europe. Towns and even large cities
There is many examples of evidence to support how Europe wasn’t in a dark age. To support this claim there are some examples. The Government ,The Rise of University, and the Gothic Cathedrals shows that Europe was not in a dark age. One reason Europe was not in a dark age was because if it was in a dark age they wouldn't know to stand up for themselves. They also had a lot of money, even though King John took it all proving that they were not in a dark age. They were also beginning to request laws so they can have some rights. According to the Black Death Documents,"To all free men of our kingdom we have also granted, for us and to our heirs for ever, all the liberties written out below, to have and to keep for them and their heirs.”Another
Another title that the Middle Ages deserve is the label Dark Ages because during the Middle Ages, there was constant chaos and destruction that plagued Western Europe. After the collapse of Rome, the invasions did not end there. The invasions continued throughout the Middle Ages by different groups and tribes. For example, during the ninth and tenth century, the Moor invasions have taken over the South and the Hungarians invaded the Eastern provinces. Both invasion groups sacked villages, held captives, burned down religious buildings, and left a path of destruction while many citizens that escaped took refuge in the mountains or deep forests (doc 1). Also during the invasions of the Moor and Hungarians, the Northmen struck terror in England. The plundered, burned towns, and returned home with boats filled with gold, people, and resources (doc. 3). However, that was not the end of all the chaos during the Middle Ages. During the 14th century, the black death hit Western Europe, which ended up wiping out 1/3 of the population and a body count of over 25 million by the end of the sixteenth century (OI). Consequently, because of the constant chaos and destruction from invasions and plague, little to no development was possible. This slowed down Western Europe's advancements and growth. The
Some of the positive effects come from when Europe was not at a "dark age". For example, Document A does not involve the "dark age" because of this era, Document A state how fair the laws were. This document states " No man shall be forced to perform more service for a knight's fee or other free holding at land, than is due from it". Another piece of evidence comes from Document C, because it does not involve the dark age, due to resettled lands, food, lots of trade, and was easy to travel, which led to population growth. According to this document, "from 1000 to 1300 the economy of Europe developed and prospered. These pieces of information show evidence of
After the fall of Roman Empire, Europe fell under the rule of many different leaders. The eastern side of the empire became the Byzantine Empire, which grew in strength and prospered in the many years after its formation. The western side, on the other hand, did not. The Germanic Kingdoms that formed on that land quickly fell under attack by barbarians. From 400 A.D. to 1400 A.D, this side of Europe fell into a "Dark Age". A lack of government, barbarian attacks, and a decline in education made the "Dark Ages" a time of cultural decay for Europe.
The dark ages were considered dark because of the countless times Europe’s been invaded. “... the heathen broke in upon the Christians at many points, but more than 12,000 of them died. Another party of invaders devastated Gaul, and more than 600 of them died” (Doc C). This all happened in the same year (845) and just shows how often Europe was invaded and ravaged. This evidence was from the abbey of Xanten records, which was made at the time and is a primary source. “The heathen from the North caused trouble in Christendom as usual and grew greater in strength” (Doc C). The records say that they invaded as usual, which shows how frequently they were invaded and how routine it was. They were so terribly secured and a main cause of this was
Europe was seen as being in a Dark Age. It is known as a time where there were wars, disease, and pure chaos. The term “dark age” was coined by Francesco Petrarch, who compared it to the classical period before the dark age, which was full of innovation. He came up with this because during 500 to 1500 A.D it was utter chaos, death and war, and people were brutally killed and slaughtered. In the year 1095 A.D., the Black Death was in full swing and the Crusaders were set out to capture the Holy Land and conquer the Muslim Turks. The people were set out for blood and it caused several crusades for two whole centuries. Europe has been through war and sickness. Because of the economic structure of Europe during the time, this can be seen as a dark age.
One theory is that Europe not in a " dark age" because of the new inventions. For example, Document E discusses the universities that still stand today. This document states, " early 11th century, universities founded." Another example, in Document A is the Magna Carta is like the bill of rights. According to this document, " the Magna Carta ideas are in the U.S. constitution." The evidence above shows that it was in a growth age.
The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. It killed many people in Europe with their symptoms of buboes, fever, vomiting, and psychological trauma due to the many people dying. According to document B, it states, “There the plague sat like a lion on a throne and swayed with power, killing daily one thousand or more and destroying the population.” This accurately shows Europe is in a Dark age because Europe faces epidemics opposed to a Growth age where people have good health. The crusades also shows Europe in a Dark age due to the massive amount of killings that had occured during that time period.
While the people were dropping like flies, the plague went airborne. The Black Death, a nickname it earned after many people died, killed many and nearly wiped out the human race in general. "The plague began in the land of darkness. China was not preserved from it. The plague infected the Indians in India, the Sind, the Persians, and the Crimea." (Ibn al-Wardi, “An Essay on the Report of the Pestilence,” 1348) This quote shows how no one was safe. Since the plague was airborne no one would ever be safe until the plague was cured. Another reason why Europe was in a dark age was when the Magna Carta was made. One may say that the Magna Carta improved society but most say that it did not. The Magna Carta was made by the nobles because the king was taking their well-earned belongings without permission. The Magna Carta stated multiple times that if anyone was caught doing a simple offense they were to be beaten brutally. “C.19. Concerning false money, we have ordered that he who has been proved to have made it shall have his hand cut
There are many factors that one could say to support the theory that Europe was in a dark age such as, the first crusade, the black death, and the government. The black death was the biggest reason that Europe was in a dark age because the black death killed one third of Europe's population. As read in Document A ¨ Frightened people abandoned the house and fled to another.¨ this shows how there were small towns, small population and isolated communities, as you can see since the disease spread so quickly, people would do anything to keep them and their family safe. When the first crusade started many fought to to their deaths. Many Christians, knights, lords, and peasants killed 70,000 muslims so they could have salvation. In document B
The Age of Exploration was a major factor of bringing Europe away from the Dark Ages. They took risks that caused positive and negative outcomes for them and outside forces. Despite the centuries that had passed while in this age, they kept the same basic motives. These were God, Glory, and Gold. Conclusively, this was the time when Europe
Arising out of the “Dark Ages” was the very weak Europe. After taking death tolls from the black death which was devastating to the European population, and also poverty spread around the entirety of Europe, the population felt stuck. In the early 1400s, the Europeans began to set out and explore the world by settling colonies in the Americas, along the coast of Africa, and parts of India and Southeast Asia. This is referred or known as the Age of Exploration. The Age of Exploration was caused by advances in technology and it was powered by the motivation for glory, religion, economic factors, and much more. The push factors and the causes of European exploration lead to a numerous amount of accomplishments ranging from new colonies/territories to bringing in wealth. If the Europeans had not had some of the push factors the Age like the fall of Constantinople, Columbus discovering the “New World” and economic reasons European Exploration would have never begun, or it would’ve taken many more years.
