Sarah Kay is a contemporary American poet. My first contact with her poetry was via YouTube. Writers occasionally read their works, I knew that, also I was a collector of song lyrics, however I was new to the existence of spoken word poetry. In brief, spoken word poetry artists perform their poems. This art form is lyrical, and, of course, more direct. The poem I saw her perform in a Ted Talk, was “B”.
In her Ted Talk, Sarah asks the audience to do an exercise: to consider three things they know to be true. Spontaneous choices. These are three things I know to be true:
1. I love life, I know that as I am afraid to die.
2. I don’t know completely who I am, I find this to be true as I’m still defining myself.
3. I know I love the blue in the sky, water, flowers, in people’s eyes, yet I yearn to remove the blue in our souls.

“B” is a poem written to a future daughter. It hit me in my stomach. For a period I couldn’t figure out what impressed me. Succinctly: the poem, the delivery, her youth, her authenticity.
At that moment in time I had an impasse on the worth of connection, and on the effort it presumes. As Sarah herself says in the Ted Talk, spoken word poetry has the power to connect. Not only that I connected with her poem, I also gained hope. That is why I love Sarah Kay’s poetry: the listener feels it, rather than hears it, it captured me.
Not being able to express harmoniously who you are, your essence, due to self-imposed or exterior reasons, equals not living. Still, arriving at authenticity implies effort, mistakes and failure. When I first heard “B” I was wondering on all of these. My epiphany was: it’s scary not knowing, it’s scary not winning. Nevertheless, if I were to dispense advice to my potential daughter, I would definitely desire to be the mother that encourages her to fail, rather than have her not fully live. I know I love life as I still I am afraid of

Sabrina Benaim’s spoken word piece “Explaining My Depression to My Mother” is emotionally overwhelming. Crammed with many impactful metaphors, the poem captures feelings of darkness and loneliness that accompany mental illness. Her hysterical tone barely allows time for breath, stressing to the audience the panic that comes with being trapped inside your own mind. The piece is performed in front of a live audience in Oakland (CA), as part of the 2014 National Poetry Slam semi-finals. The purpose of this essay is to justify why and how the piece “Explaining My Depression to My Mother” is both creative and communication. It shall also address the various strengths and weaknesses the spoken word piece has.
Anne Hutchinson has long been seen as a strong religious dissenter who paved the way for religious freedom in the strictly Puritan environment of New England. Another interpretation of the controversy surrounding Anne Hutchinson asserts that she was simply a loving wife and mother whose charisma and personal ideas were misconstrued to be a radical religious movement. Since this alleged religious movement was led by a woman, it was quickly dealt with by the Puritan fathers as a real threat. Whatever her motives, she was clearly a great leader in the cause of religious toleration in America and the advancement of women in society. Although Anne Hutchinson is historically documented to have been banished as a religious dissenter, the real

In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
