There are many effects that a longer school day present. Many people in the community are affected. Students, teachers and family are only some of the people. Longer school days can bring health risks to the students and teachers. With an extra hour of school, students that live in the country or in rural areas can be putting in twelve hour days. This is not good for the health of a teenager that needs sleep in order to grow and energy for exercise and learning. Children, such as students in Kindergarten up to sixth grade, still need sleep. With an extra hour of school in place, burnout can take place and harm student motivation. The bonds that were created by the parents and their child, are weakened because of less family time spent together. Not only does this create a tense atmosphere and a less happy home, children and teens are more likely to go on the wrong path without their parents guidance and common sense. Without their family members to guide them, teenager and children can make many wrong choices that can hurt the community around them. The article, Pros Vs. Cons of Extended School Days, states, “One of the most important aspects of making changes in the amount of time spent in school that is often overlooked is the impact on families. The Andover Townsman online newspaper of Andover, Mass., reports families in its school districts worry that more time away from home means less time for students to interact with their parents, eliminating many of the positive effects from parental involvement” (source 4, 1). Parent really do play a big role in helping teenagers one the right path and without this time with them, the bond can break and lead teenagers and children onto the wrong trail.
