Shorter School Days Research Paper

Everyone has wanted to have more time after school for homework and other things that you like to do? Well i think that school days should be shorter and mostly everyone agrees. Students would have more time for homework and other activities after school. Teachers would also have spare time to grade papers and come up with new assignments.

A lot of parents are shaking their heads at the consideration of a four-day school week, and a longer school day. Shorter school weeks or longer school days are reasonable solutions when there is a shortage of funding, or possible budget cuts coming to the school district. This solution has many mixed opinions from parents, teachers and school board members.

Having a later school start time can increase a student’s academic grades and awareness. Thirty-three percent of teens say that they fell asleep in class. Even though this is a small portion of teens, falling asleep in class shouldn’t even happen once. Also, this means they are getting less than what they need,(eight to nine hours of sleep a night). A school needs to pack as much teaching time as they can in a day, but if that means waking up a student at a time so early, then there's no point.When a student doesn’t sleep as much, students are not aware as they would be if they had a good night’s rest. If students had this sleep, the would pay more attention in class. Therefor, a student would have better grades.

Say goodbye to the three months of summer vacation and say hello to year-round school! Year-round school has very many positive features, it can decrease summer learning loss, stress, and the United States students catch up with the rest of the world. The decrease of brain drain will improve learning, teachers won’t have to reteach the student, that’s stressful and kids will do better on the state test, so the U.S. can catch up. Year round school is killing three birds with one stone.

Can you imagine getting up on a Friday morning and not having to get up and go to school. This is becoming more than just a really good dream in some places across the country. This is happening as close as Hot Springs School District in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Many school officials around the country are switching to the system because they believe it is better financially and better for the kids. A four day school week will be better for the children and financially because it saves the school money, student and teacher morale are better, and better test scores.

School should be started later then it is currently starting. Many kids do not get enough sleep, for various reasons. Some students try to stay up all night on their cell phones and other devices. Other’s go to bed around 9:30 to 10:30, but these students still struggle to get up. We could eliminate tired students who crawl from class to class by moving start times back by an hour or two. If schools started at a later time then students could get more sleep, they could feel more energized and ready for school, and it could help improve students grades.

There has always been a controversy as to if the school day should start later on in the morning or not. The University of Minnesota study shows that schools who have already changed the beginning of the school day to later have found that only a third of students actually received eight or more hours of sleep while the students who received less than eight hours reported to have more symptoms of depression, higher counts of caffeine, and substance abuse with alcohol and drugs. In “Should the School Day Start Later?” written by Michael Gonchar, Gonchar writes that, “New evidence suggests that a later start to the school day could have all sorts of benefits…” Some of those benefits could include the decrease of tardiness, increase in attendance, test scores and everyday grades, more positive mental health, and even car crash rates. All in all the research and studies over if the school day should start later has been in discussion for years.

DING! DING! That awful sound of the alarm goes off. Sound familiar? For many middle school and high school students across America this is just a typical early weekday morning. This isn’t because teens are lazy, it is because of the school start times. I think teen students’ need a later school start time for many supported reasons. Although, schools starting later means school would end later and possibly interfere with extra-curricular activities, school times should be should be pushed back to later times because students will have a better sleep pattern, students health will improve, and students will have better academic performance.

School days need to start later: Starting school days later will cause an extensive impact on everyone, even if it is an hour difference. Research shows that 2/3 of high school students are getting less than seven hours of sleep. Studies suggest that later school starts will benefit the students along with parents. This will benefit the students as well as parents for the reason of the students bodies are not functioning correctly in class, it is causing a lot of stress for everyone as well as helping students have an enjoyable time at school. If School days continue to start at a time of 8:30 am or earlier, we will observe more students along with parents having trouble with their terrible sleeping habits that can lead to food disorders as well as depression.

On Monday, we continue to do the floor stretches which it helps me a lot because I feel that I am stretched well enough to do anything. After the stretches we all went to the side to practice pique turns. I kept spotting the whole time, so I won’t get dizzy when I was turning. We also tried our right and left leaps across the room. Then we tried the open side leap in which I master, but I still have to bring it higher like the rest of my classmates.

Studies have also shown that from shifting the school day to start later in the morning resulted in a boost in attendance, test scores, and grades in FOUR of the major subjects increased. Which is very important in a student’s life because they need to learn how big of a role attendance plays in everyday life, it also shows students what they are capable of in school, which make students more confident to go to college. It also showed a decrease in tardiness, substance abuse, and symptoms of depression. This is important because if a teen starts abusing substances at a young age there is high chance that they will continue to abuse them later on in life. And some even showed a dramatic decrease in teen car accidents. Also if teen feel rushed they think they have to drive fast to get to school on time, which highly increase crash rates among

Imagine sitting at a desk all day listening to a teacher drone on and hand you a worksheet right after that. Well if your school day was 9 hours and 30 minutes instead of 8 hours, then that's what you would have to do. You would be there till 4:30 in the afternoon. Who wants to be there for that with only lunch as a break? Every class would be about 18 minutes longer. Which is why I don’t agree with schools extending the day because it can cause sleep deprivation, result in more kids getting in trouble, and more kids zoning out.

Schools are so much a part of our society, so the accurate length of school days is extremely important. Public opinions on the length of the school days are different. There are a lot of parents and professors concerned that it is hard for children to go to school early in the morning and stay there the whole day. On the other side, some professors try to force students into a nine hour school day. Not so many years ago, school was a main part of my life, and the school days’ structure and length affected my social life and ability to study. From my own experience and some studies that I have seen, students benefit if school days are long.

More time, less stress, and an easier learning environment, those are the benefits of having shorter school days. On the other hand, you’d have you’d have a longer school year, and probably a bit more responsibility. But in the end it is worth it, getting to sleep in, and actually being able to get home at a decent time after sports. So would you agree that shorter school days are worth it?

Having shorter school day could benefit students outside of school. On debate.org struggling students could find tutors after school to work with them. By doing so everyone would be on the same page. Also after school students would have time to join clubs that they’re interested in. If we have a shorter school day students would get their homework done faster at home.
