Should Abortion be Illegal? By Falynne Murphy
Abortion: “the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy.” Is abortion murder? Do you believe in a women’s right to chose? This topic has been an argument since 1500 BCE. What do you think or feel is the right decision regarding abortion? There are many arguments that are pro-abortion and there are also many that oppose abortion. “If women become pregnant, they should accept the responsibility that comes with producing a child” (ethics - Abortion: Responsibility of the Mother.” BBC, BBC,), abortion should be illegal.
The earliest recorded ban on an abortion making the act illegal is from the 11th century. The ban made it illegal for married women to get abortions without approval from their husbands. Does this ban make the act illegal or maybe just immoral? In the US Constitution, it states that every person has the right to life, “ … nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.” Even though the none developed baby can’t advocate for itself the embryo is a living, feeling, life that has a right to choose their existence for themselves. One message that people all around the world promote very strongly is all lives matter. There are movements, artwork, social media posts, and even articles written, there are many ways people promote the motto “all lives matter.” One thing abortion hints towards is that a human life is disposable. There are many forms of birth control to keep a baby from even becoming a living thing. In abortion, the baby is already a living cell, which you then kill because it is inconvenient for the woman to be having a child at that moment in time. For a culture that nurtures “all lives matter” so abundantly and then to turn around and be contempt with disposing of a human life is contradicting. In some cases, women use abortion to get rid of a baby with genetic abnormalities, also known as birth defects, which is pure discrimination. Some genetic abnormalities that can occur with babies are down syndrome, Fragile x syndrome (a mental impairment that ranges from learning disabilities to intellectual disabilities also known as mental retardation), and Spina Bifida (the
If medical tests have proven that the child will be born with severe handicaps that would greatly reduce the quality of life or endanger the fetus, the opportunity to terminate should be available. Allowing abortion because of fetal disability may actually benefit the child in the long run, by saving it from a life full of unnecessary complications. This, however, is a very controversial reason and is not generally accepted by many people due to moral reasons.
Throughout the history of the world there is nearly four thousand years of abortion history, which we find that from the earliest times this issue has been less about abortion and more about life - its value and its sanctity. Abortion and contraception were lawful at the time of this country 's founding, and then criminalized, state by state, in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. For the century after that, no woman could have an abortion unless a doctor declared that it was necessary to save her life (Abortion and the "Woman Question": Forty Years of Debate).
“Abortion does not make you un-pregnant, it makes you the mother of a dead baby”-Jacqueline Naour. Before researching this report I did not really think about how they kill the child or how the abortion actually occurs, so I did not really think much of it or know it was such a bad thing. As I have written this report I realized that it is honestly one of the worst things I’ve ever read about and should be illegal without question. Abortion should be illegal because it makes human life disposable, fewer babies are available for adoption, fetuses can feel pain during the abortion, it endangers the mother getting the abortion, and the child has no say, meaning it kills innocent people.
Abortion is a very invasive and tragic medical procedure that is used to terminate a pregnancy and ultimately end an innocent life that is known as the unborn fetus or baby and should be illegal. This medical procedure consists of in most cases regrettable choices and an emotional toile on a person’s life that cannot be undone. Abortion should be illegal because it’s sending a very negative message to the younger generation that being promiscuous and making bad decisions can have almost no responsibility and consequences, another reason it should be illegal is because abortion is murder.
Abortion is the most common way to get out of unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. Abortion is also one of the most controversial issues and one of the most heated moral debate in the United States today. An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy and expulsion and death of the fetus generally before it is viable (capable of independent life). Human pregnancy typically lasts anywhere from 38-40 weeks, and abortions are almost always done within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. If a mother can kill her own child, then how can we tell other people not to kill each other? Abortion is unethical due to the awareness, surrounding pregnancy and the viable alternatives available.
There comes a time in a many young women’s life when they are faced with having a child of their own. They have two options, either they can have the child or they could abort the child. All people deserve a chance at life, so all kinds of abortion should be illegal. Abortion should be illegal because it goes against the bible, there are women who cannot have kids who would gladly love to have the child, and fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as four weeks gestation.
Imagine a woman was raped and later became pregnant. Shouldn 't she have the right to abort the child or should she be forced to deliver? Put yourself in her shoes. Can you imagine the pain she might feel every time she looks at the child? Should she be forced to endure this? Women should be allowed to have abortions under circumstances such as these.
Individuals throughout the world have different aspects towards abortion. Some may argue that abortion should be outlawed and treated like the murder of a human being while others believe abortion should remain a legal choice to all women. The ones who are for abortion have argued that women have a moral right to decide what to do with their own bodies. On the other hand, the ones against abortion like myself have argued that the fetus is a human being from the moment of conception. Therefore, abortion is the moral killing of an innocent human being. Having an abortion is never the solution for unwanted pregnancies because it is not the fault of the innocent unborn child. Women put themselves at risk since abortion brings medical complications later on in life. The moral killing of a human being should overturn the decision made by the Supreme Court in the Roe v. Wade, whom created a law in which women had the right to abort a child at anytime even if it past the point of viability. Not only is an abortion the killing of a human being, but also it defies the word of God. Abortion is not the solution for unwanted pregnancies because it can cause medical complications, defies the word of God, and is the immoral killing of an innocent human being.
Abortion is has been a hot topic, since federal law protected a woman 's right to choose an abortion in the court case Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 (“How Did Abortion Become Legal?”). Roe v. Wade was a woman named Norma McCorvey who was not married but was pregnant who wanted an abortion. The Texas law denied her request to get an abortion, so she filled a federal lawsuit to have the Texas law declared unconstitutional. She argued that it was her right to decide if she wanted to get an abortion or not. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed with her and she was allowed to get an abortion (“How Did Abortion Become Legal?”). Since 1973, pro-life activists have mentioned things that might make you think twice about getting an abortion. Pro-life supporter’s arguments against abortion often lacks the truth. Therefore, pro-life activists should use credible evidence to support their accusations.
Abortion, as you all may know, is a really popular topic. There have long been many debates between the two groups, pro-life and pro-choice. People who are pro-life believe that part of the government’s job is to protect all forms of human life. Those who are pro-choice believe that every individual should have control over their own reproductive systems. Pro-life supporters strongly believe that even an undeveloped fetus has life; it is still growing and it needs to be protected. And this sounds reasonable. However, after doing more research on this topic, I believe abortion should remain legal. In this speech I will be explaining how making abortion illegal could lead to emotional instability, illegal abortions, and how it could violate a women’s right to choose.
When a pregnant woman is murdered, the murderer is charged with a double murder, whereas the killing of an innocent unborn child is legal. I believe that abortion should be illegal in the United States. The American Pregnancy Association and Gutt Macher Institute have published articles in regards to abortion. James Agresti, president of Just Facts, a nonprofit organization, also has provided facts on abortion. The Bible also speaks clearly on the subject. I believe that there is no good that may come from abortion. Abortion has the ability to damage an entire family.
In Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem “the Mother” the entire theme was based on abortion. A mother was not emotionally or mentally ready to have children, so she did what needed to be done; she aborted. This poem was written in 1945 and still today’s society still has objections on pro-choice. On January 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court ruled that abortion is a fundamental right that was guaranteed by the US Constitution. In short terms the ruling stated that a woman, with her doctor, could have the option to end her pregnancy. This ruling made abortion legal in the United States which seemed to be a relief for some and others a restraint. Abortion has been a controversial issue in the United States for years. There are one of two sides that can be chosen in this debate; pro-life or pro-choice. Those who believe in pro-life consider abortion as intentionally murdering a human being. In contrast to the advocates, you have the opponents, who believe abortion is not the same as murder that it is here to help not hinder a woman. Having an abortion is a huge decision to be made. The word abortion itself means to remove the fetus from the uterus before it is able to survive on its own. The question that still stirs up an audience still remains “should abortion be legal?”
Abortion is a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. There are series of legal, moral and ethical issues which may arise about abortion. Most arguments about abortion are often focused on political insinuations and the legal aspect of such actions. Some frequently asked questions’ regarding the issue is if the practice should be outlawed and regarded as murder or should women have the right to practice it. For example, prior to becoming pregnant, some women feel that they would be able to choose the abortion option without trouble. However, even with reasons why having an abortion would be the best option, some women feel that this decision would not be right for them. On the other hand, some women have a strong belief that abortion is unethical prior to becoming pregnant.
While studying the debate on whether or not abortion should be illegal, you are approached by many different writers with interesting arguments, filled with their opinions and reasons for why abortion should or should not be allowed. Two essays that have caught my attention while reading about the debate of abortion are: “A Defense of Abortion” by Judith Jarvis Thomson, and “An Almost Absolute Value in History”, by John T. Noonan Jr. Thomson argues that abortion is permissible in cases where the mother’s life is at stake, where the sex was consensual but had faulty contraceptives, and lastly, in cases where the mother was raped. Noonan’s approach to abortion is that almost all cases of abortion are wrong, except if the pregnancy causes
The struggle between knowing what is right and wrong when speaking about abortion is one that has been controversial for quite a long time. What gives someone the right to say if abortion should legal, while telling the other person there doing the wrong thing with their lives. The personal choice is being taken away from people and is largely an argument based on factors such as a person’s social wellbeing and religious background (BOLCE, L). Along with this “Factors other than social class and background and religiosity have been identified to be important in the structuring of opinion towards abortion, including political ideology, sex role orientation, and personal morality.” (BOLCE ,L) . Abortion is an important sociological issue
