Society, in today’s America, is constantly debating and never agreeing. Whether it be what phone is better, whom the president should be or who or if at all, we should be at war with; no one can unanimously agree on any topic in this country. This is no different then with the current hot topic of abortion. Abortion, although legal in this country, is still treated and viewed as taboo because of a dominantly Christian-American society. Some Christians make it seem that if you are pro-choice then you are pro-murder. However this is not the case. I will explain what abortion really is and why it is necessary that it stay legal. The history of abortion in America is a lengthy road full of twists and turns. TO begin, in the early 19th century abortions were relatively legal in America. Many states in the early 19th century began to restrict and then ban abortions for various reasons. The first state to make any restriction regarding abortion was Connecticut in 1821. Connecticut prohibited a harmful substance that caused a miscarriage after “quickening”. Quickening is the stage of the pregnancy when the fetus makes movements, such as kicking (Wilson). Other states began to ban this substance as well and abortions were becoming less and less legal countrywide. The last major anti-abortion legislation was passed in 1873. This legislation was called the Comstock law. This law made “selling, distributing or owning any abortion related product or service”, illegal, as well as,
Abortion has been a heated debate in the United States for decades. Since before the ruling on Roe v. Wade, it is clear that this is an issue that is far from ever being decided upon. Between those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice, scholars from both sides work on disproving the morality of the other side. With the evolution of abortion laws and regulation through the decades, it is difficult to imagine the United States without conflict pertaining to abortion. Despite pro-life and pro-choice agendas, the country is in ever-changing opinion when it comes to abortion.
A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day” (“Abortions Worldwide this Year”). On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.
How many times has the topic of abortion come up in one of your conversation? One minute you could be talking about a party and the next everyone is giving their opinions on abortion. For those who are not aware, abortion is the “removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy.” Abortions are one of the many topics people always debate about. Laws against abortion first appeared in the 1820’s, “…forbidding mothers to get an abortion after their fourth month of pregnancy (Lewis, par. 1)”. Most abortions in the US had been outlawed by 1900. By 1965, all fifty states had banned abortions, with some exceptions that varied by state. In 1973, the Supreme Court declared existing state abortion laws unconstitutional. While
Abortion is a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. There are series of legal, moral and ethical issues which may arise about abortion. Most arguments about abortion are often focused on political insinuations and the legal aspect of such actions. Some frequently asked questions’ regarding the issue is if the practice should be outlawed and regarded as murder or should women have the right to practice it. For example, prior to becoming pregnant, some women feel that they would be able to choose the abortion option without trouble. However, even with reasons why having an abortion would be the best option, some women feel that this decision would not be right for them. On the other hand, some women have a strong belief that abortion is unethical prior to becoming pregnant.
The controversial issue within United States to be discussed is whether or not abortion should be legal. The issue originated from the case Roe vs Wade; henceforth abortion is now a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme Court. Top current debates today from proponents and opponents are: pregnant women will resort to unsafe illegal abortions if there is no legal option and it is a fundamental human right for the women to choose. Many suggest there are better alternatives such as adoption, and abortion is wrong because killing a fetus demeans the value of human life. Primary advocates who support abortion are identified as pro-choice; they contend that abortion is a human right that should not be limited by governmental or religious authority. Those against abortion are identified as pro-life;they assert life begins at conception and fetuses are innocent human being entitled to human rights. Within the United States, Abortion should be a pregnant woman 's choice for their well-being and safeness, restrictions interfering with unintended pregnant woman 's freedom, and for the overall well-fare of the fetus if it were to born.
Subsequent to parsing an overwhelmingly shocking amount of, not only pro-choice, but also pro-abortion articles published to the New York Times, one particular text titled New F.D.A. Guidelines Ease Access to Abortion Pill caught my attention. Contrary to a lengthy duration of anti-abortion progressivism, it seems that pro-abortionist, and seemingly less detrimental pro-choice movements are gaining support, rather dishearteningly. Ultimately abortion, according to a plethora of both scriptural and secular ideologies, is inherently unacceptable.
There should be a law that would prohibit pregnant woman from smoking tabaco products, due to the harm that the drugs have on the unborn children. Currently we do have some states with statues that touch on the subject of pregnant and smoking, but while the issue is getting bigger, we should be able to enforce more strict rules that would set a punishment on those harming the unborn children. There have been many studies made about the harm of tabaco products on human body proving that smoking slowly kills. In the response to the studies, we should be able to enforce strict rules that would help to eliminate the issue of smoking while pregnant because it leads to serious health related problems to those that have no chance of protecting themselves. Such issue might be hard to eliminate, but giving the legislation a start it would be a good beginning in the enforcement of that law. Some states already have started the debate which would determine if women should be held criminally liable for abusing drugs and other stimulates. The main argument for this law to be an important legislation to pass, is the fact that we see an increase in the children being born with drug addictions across the nation. To protect the mothers from loosing the newly born children, and to protect those who are born with health related problems we should create a law that would prohibit pregnant woman from smoking tabaco and using drugs and held the offenders criminally liable.
The decision to end the life of someone without their own consent has caused great disruption among Americans. Before the civil rights movement, Americans idealized the idea that abortion was ultimately prohibited due to the fact that religion predominated the beliefs of the people. Now in a rapid changing-liberal society, people are questioning if prohibiting a woman from aborting is denying her inalienable right of freedom as listed under the First Amendment. The right to abortion should be left in the hands of a woman’s personal decision rather than being obligated to live with the results of something she never wanted.
Abortion is one of the most argumentative topics of all times. It has caused countless deaths and several violent confrontations between the two separate parties of opinion, pro-life & pro-choice advocates. Despite what we may believe abortion is neither right, nor wrong. It is the matter of a personal opinion; each side will certainty says that the other one is wrong. Even though millions of abortions have been performed since 1973, the debate over whether abortion is strongly argued by many Americans, as well as people of many other countries and cultures. The question still remains, why should abortion remain legal?
Abortion has become a common argument topic in America; numerous individuals consider themselves pro-life and others pro-choice. Those who consider themselves pro-life oppose abortion, while those who are pro-choice advocate for abortion to be legalized. I believe that abortion should be illegal and that life should be recognized upon conception.
Abortion has been an ongoing issue for many years and over the years this issue has grown in importance. This issue is widely argued over many subjects and like many other aspects of the human life, this is an issue which is definitely up for open interpretation. If the word abortion isn’t clear than here is a little definition of it, "the termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus that is incapable of survival." I don’t think that because a fetus is unborn, that fetus does not have any rights, actually that organism is in development meaning it should hold equal human rights, again it is definitely up for debate. Abortion is a subject which could be considered as a debatable gray area in life which no matter how much is argued will never be clear as to what really is right or wrong. There are many people out there, me included, would go against abortion because we believe that it is a form of murder because even though the organism is helpless is nonetheless a living organism forming to become a human being. There are those who would argue against this and say that it is ok to abort an unborn baby and that a woman has the right to choose what she does with her body and anything which grows and lives inside of her. If she claims that she is not fit to bring a life form into the world than they would argue that abortion is the best way to go without any hesitation. A few questions come up when this issue comes up for debate, for example is abortion
Abortion, I believe has always been and will continue to be a very controversial subject. Abortion has been argued continuously over the past years and will always be a topic that is going to get people on their high horse. Abortion is defined as the termination of a human pregnancy, typically done before the embryo or fetus is capable of life. Basically a medical procedure done to end the unwanted pregnancy and the cause of death of the fetus. The most asked question is should abortion be legal? When it comes to the topic of abortion, there are two sides to this topic, Pro-life and the Pro-Choice side. Those who are against abortion entirely are considered to be pro-life, and those who believe it is the woman’s right to choose between keeping the baby or terminating the pregnancy are pro-choice. The solution to individuals who are for pro-life is to have the child and give it up for adoption, or raise it. On the contrary the solution to individuals who are pro-choice is only that of abortion. The solution of abortion is considered ethically wrong and should be illegal because there are consequences for both the mother and the child resulting from an abortion. About 10% of women who are having an abortion suffer instant complications, potentially life-threatening. The rates of women’s death from various causes after abortion are 3.5 times higher than after giving birth, and that’s scary to think that you could have so many complications to cause you to die. People think that
Even though many people have negative opinions on abortions, legal abortion is a necessity women should have access to because women who do not have access to an abortion can experience more stress than if she was able to have one and many women need to have abortions for unwanted pregnancies or due to concern for the mother’s and/or baby 's health. In 1972, the Roe v. Wade supreme court case legalize abortion nationwide, but since then states have passed laws to restrict the availability of abortions. In some states they now require counseling and waiting periods before you can receive an abortion. Legal abortion is a safe procedure and has less risk of complications. Many clinics, including planned parenthood, are opened around the
“No one has the right to choose what is wrong”. When Abraham Lincoln said this, he was making a strong point towards people making decision for themselves and not others. It’s a strange truth that no matter how persuaded we might be of our own perfection; the understanding that others disagree with us causes a failure to argue the case convincingly. If a woman is pregnant, she is allowed to do what she wants to do with her body. No family member, friend, or doctor will provide for her baby because it’s not his or hers. It is the mother decision to decide if she is ready and competent to raise a child. Abortion should be legal due to the fact, it reduces crimes, acknowledges women to have a right, and it prevents
¨No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body” said Margaret Sanger (Quotes About Abortion). An abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. 69% of women that have abortions are economically disadvantaged (The Demographics Of Abortion: It 's Not What You Think). This is one of the reasons abortions should stay legalized, over half of the women would have been struggling to take care of their child without it. Abortion was legalized on January 27, 1973 in a 7-2 decision by the United States Supreme Court (About Abortion). Before this, abortion was illegal unless it was being used to save a woman’s life. Even though it was illegal, women around the world used abortion at every point in history. Getting an abortion while it was illegal depended on the woman’s economic situation, race, and where she lived. Some poor women even turned to self-abortions which were unsafe. For example, they would use knitting needles or coat hangers to perform the procedure. Other women swallowed strong drugs or chemicals. Women fought and marched to make abortion legal (History Of Abortion in the U.S. - Our Bodies Ourselves). More than 16 million children in the US (22%) of all children- live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level (Child Poverty). This proves that abortion represents a current crisis. Abortion should stay legal for the following reasons: it reduces crime, gives women
