As an athlete myself, I am always looking for an edge over the competition. With the advantages made for Athletes in nutrition, there are many options to get that “edge”. Protein supplements, creatine, androstenedione, anabolic steroids; many athletes, including myself, turn to one or more of these products for that little extra to beat the competition. If an athlete is using these products, is it really the athlete performing, or is it the supplement? Through this paper, I will research the effects (positive and negative) of using these products, as well as determining whether or not each product should be allowed in organized competition. There are lots of different types of "boosts" that give you the extra you need to outbeat the competition and to perform better. What exactly should be allowed and what not? No longer does an athlete want to win by doing their best, but they want to become bigger and have an advantage over the opponent. Ultimately, all athletes feel that they need to use performance-enhancing drugs to compete at the same level. Despite all of the warnings and information on performance-enhancing drugs, athletes continue to use them and overlook the potential health risks associated with steroids.
