Sports have become very popular in America. Parents want their kids to participate in many sports. Many parents also hold high expectations for their kids to be physically fit (Romeo,1984). Teenagers who excel in sports need to be physically fit (Bingham,2009). Many sports stress control over the body and mind (Graves,2000). Coaching is a very tough job, they alway need their players at their top performance level. Coaches often concern your weight with your performance (Romeo,1984). When you are a football player you are many times told to hit the weight room to gain weight. When you are a wrestler you are many times told to run or not eat in order to make the weight class you want to compete in. Gymnasts are told to work out constantly to have the strength in order to pull off the flips and stunts that they do. When teenagers start losing weight sometimes they do not want to stop. Teenagers feel a sense of achievement as they watch their weight go down (Bingham,2009). Some teenagers think working out is fun. Some wrestlers will do anything to shred a little weight before having to weigh in. Most teenagers with anorexia put themselves through intensive exercise to prevent any weight gain just like these gymnasts and wrestlers (Bingham,2009). Physical activity is a large part of being healthy, especially at a young age. Participating in sports is a very popular form of obtaining this exercise, as nearly thirty-six million kids play organized sports each year (Source 6). Coaches are extremely influential in the development of minors. They are the role models for the children to learn and grow from. Most coaches are parents, almost eighty-five percent (Source 6). However, this can have positive and negative effects on the participants that would differ from the effects of having a trained, “unbiased” coach. Many problems are evident when it comes to coaching staffs for youth sports; many parents take on the task of coaching without knowing they are unqualified, partial, and may damage their child psychologically.
Kids need to exercise because it’s detrimental to their health when they grow up. Kids don’t exercise mainly for the reason that they have plenty of other issues that consume their time. 53% of kids use their time on screens playing computer and video games, 74% of parents say they have family time watching tv. “Most kids don’t get enough exercise” (Hendrick 1) Consequently kids don’t get the exercise they need, for these consume their time.
Along with health being a main benefit to participating in a sport, many personal skills are developed within an individual. Communication and social skills develop as a teen becomes more involved in a sport. Teamwork is considered a great example and is naturally learned through participating in team sports and games (Castle, Glenn, 2011-2013). Athletes who appear to be healthy are often to be at risk to have Bulimia Nervosa. Athletes need to eat a healthy diet in order to achieve their goal goal weight or “ideal” body image. When athletes diet they are very strict because they can not be overweight or underweight for their sport they are competing in. According to Teen Health and Wellness, “ Athletes are also at risk for eating disorders, especially those who are in sports that connect weight with performance. It can be a problem for dancers, weight lifters, wrestlers, gymnasts, swimmers, and long-distance runners. Teens in competitive soccer leagues are also at risk.” Athletes are more at risk then models because they have to achieve a goal weight for their particular sport and keep that weight off. If athletes have little or too much weight then it may affect their performance within their sport. Many people see athletes as the best ones in shape and healthy but athletes are not necessarily healthy they are more at risk for eating disorders and dying at a young age. Wrestlers often workout two to three times a day to keep off their weight for their match or tournament they are competing just so they can have lunch or dinner. In recent years, adolescents have become less physically active, which can be attributed to a series of environmental factors. One factor is the transition from middle school to high school, which changes the pattern of physical activity in many adolescents. A possible reasoning can be because in high school, sports become less about participation and more competitive, which results in many adolescents abandoning sports and focusing on other areas of interest. Furthermore, adolescents spend most of their day in school, which consists of being seated in a classroom for the majority of the time. Although there is a short period for physical education, there is no guarantee that students will actively participate (Hills et al., 2007). Another possible reason is parental lifestyle, if parents are not active and never formed a habit of playing with their children outdoors, then the children are more likely to adopt the same habits when they are older. Also, in today’s society, parents are increasingly vigilant and worry for their child’s safety, so they spend less time outdoors (Hills et al., 2007). When adolescents spend more time indoors, there is also an increased use of technology, which can lead to a combination of detrimental behaviors that ultimately lead to overweight and obesity in adolescents.
It is a cultural norm in America for children to join sports teams when they are young. Whether it be basketball,soccer, or gymnastics, the purpose of sports is to instill a desire to work hard and persevere. People say that the purpose of sports is to promote a healthy lifestyle full of nutritious food choices and exercise. However, not every sport holds its players to these healthy standards. It is becoming increasingly more normal for people to go to extremes in order to be skinny, especially when it comes to dance and wrestling.
The problem is that there aren’t enough kids and teens participating in youth sports, and that is where they attain important skills and lessons that can be used later in life. There have been numerous observations and tests that suggest that student athletes have higher GPAs, better attendance, lower rate of dropouts, higher standardized testing scores, and a greater chance of going/ being accepted to college compared to students that don 't play sports (“Be Active Your Way Blog”). The qualities you receive from sports can be effective in all aspects of life. Sports and it 's stress only help you to stay calm and collected in other situations. This issue is largely based in the developed countries due to the fact that they can afford to be work-shy; they can spend that money on other harmful habits. The athletic programs in schools solely provide children with different ways to learn motor skills, advance fitness, and gain knowledge about physical activity. The physical benefits acquired from establishing a pattern of physical activity in a child’s life include disease prevention, reduced morbidity, safety, and increased intellectual health. In a standard United States physical education program, students learn about the health benefits obtained from participating in physically active activities, as well as the importance of continuing these practices throughout life. In elementary school, the athletics program emphasizes the development of fundamental locomotor, non-locomotor, and artful skills through dance, gymnastics, and games. The motor skill basis established during elementary years can increase children’s social, cognitive, and physical development, and could also increase the individual’s interest in physical activities later on in life. Subsequently, in middle school, the physical activities taught in elementary school are usually refined, combined, and applied to sport-related activities. However, the expeditious growth in children during this time may affect the student’s interests, leading the student to develop diverse fitness elements. It has always been common knowledge that the involvement of youth in sports has many benefits in not only the physical aspect but in the psychological aspect as well. With so many advancements in technology and the youth of today are getting less active every single day the involvement of youth in sports is more important now than it ever was. Adults that have participated in sports in their youth are more likely to live a healthy lifestyle and to pass those positive behaviors onto their children as well. The numbers for children participating in sports are dwindling and the negative effects of this on our society and future adults may not be known for years to come but what needs to be know is the positive impact that it does have on our children.
Sports, whether team-based or individual, are a great activity for children that provide a variety of benefits other than physical activity. Participation in sports can help build self-esteem and confidence, can motivate children to excel academically and can help build social skills. Participation also can teach children the benefits of goal-setting and practice. One may ask why it is beneficial for children to have these characteristics in their best intrest and the answer revolves around public health and how such benefits can truly be beneficial for society. It is the duty of our public health system to encourage young ones to not only be active for their future lifestyles, but to also be active in order to make the world a better place.
