Should It Be Physically Fit Teenagers Gaining Weight?

Sports have become very popular in America. Parents want their kids to participate in many sports. Many parents also hold high expectations for their kids to be physically fit (Romeo,1984). Teenagers who excel in sports need to be physically fit (Bingham,2009). Many sports stress control over the body and mind (Graves,2000). Coaching is a very tough job, they alway need their players at their top performance level. Coaches often concern your weight with your performance (Romeo,1984). When you are a football player you are many times told to hit the weight room to gain weight. When you are a wrestler you are many times told to run or not eat in order to make the weight class you want to compete in. Gymnasts are told to work out constantly to have the strength in order to pull off the flips and stunts that they do. When teenagers start losing weight sometimes they do not want to stop. Teenagers feel a sense of achievement as they watch their weight go down (Bingham,2009). Some teenagers think working out is fun. Dancers, gymnasts, wrestlers, and boxers are at more risk for having anorexia than others because of the shape they have to stay in (Bingham,2009). Some wrestlers will do anything to shred a little weight before having to weigh in. Most teenagers with anorexia put themselves through intensive exercise to prevent any weight gain just like these gymnasts and wrestlers (Bingham,2009). Some others choose to diet and not eat in order to be a certain weight, what they do not know is that dieting and working out constantly can stunt their growth because it prevents teens from getting the nutrients they need in order to grow properly (Ojeda,2003).
