Should marijuana be legalized? Many Americans have been asked this question or have heard some type of news about the issue. Marijuana is commonly known as cannabis which refers to the dried up hemp plant cannabis sativa, even though marijuana is a plant and has no chemical additives it has been a tropic of controversy for many years but nowadays it is in the spotlight more than ever. For centuries, marijuana has been used by people throughout the world for religious, recreational and medical use. A few countries like the Netherlands and Uruguay have already legalized marijuana for recreational use and many other countries are taking a step towards doing so. Is it finally time for the United States to take a closer look into possibly legalizing marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized for medical and recreational purposes because it would aid in the War on drugs, it would become an important source of revenue for the government and reduce overpopulation of American jails.

Although some U.S. conservatives are against medical marijuana legalization because it can be a gateway drug and lower young people’s I.Q.s, I believe that medical marijuana should be legalized because it can help with several medical conditions, and it would boost the economy.

The laws created will not be perfect and they will require all parties to afford a bit of flexibility.

I like to think that I am fairly level headed when it come to recreational drug use. My parents did a good job of teaching me not to abuse drugs. I only snuck sips of alcohol to see what it tasted like when I was a teenager. Now that I am 21 and in college I will admit to occasionally getting drunk intentionally. I’ve never picked up smoking; I have had a cigar at a wedding. I have made it a point to stay away from illegal drugs like meth, cocaine, ecstasy, heroine, and etcetera. As for marijuana, I tried it in Colorado recently with my boyfriend. Afterwards, and during, I thought about why it isn’t legalized for recreational use in more areas. Marijuana continues to be a big controversy in today 's society just as it has been for decades. Since the legalization in certain states such as California, Colorado, and even the District of Columbia, there has been evidence supporting the benefits that can come from legalization. New research shows that the legalization of marijuana can help prevent drug related crimes, and even stop violent crimes. It is also found that there are immense economic values that could come from legalization. It is found that the taxation of marijuana could help reduce taxes and help out the United States with dept. Another key component being that legalization will free up prisons, which us citizens tax dollars to support inmates. Last but not least one of the main key components of the legalization marijuana are its medical values. It is proven that there are many medical values that come from the plant and are a healthy alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. All and all marijuana offers a lot of benefits to the U.S. and should be greatly considered.

Despite it’s many practical uses, medicinal and industrial, our Federal government insists on maintaining the status quo that the growth, possession and use of marijuana is criminal despite the evidence that the legalization of marijuana would have a positive influence on America.

Presently, Marijuana is illegal in the United States due to the racially motivated Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This law was proposed by Harry J. Anslinger the acting commissioner of Federal Bureau of Narcotics. In his testimony to Congress he stated, "There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others" (ukcia.org, (n.d), para. 1). Since this time, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 has spawned more strict laws that have many unintended side effects. After many decades, effective federal propaganda has won public support for these laws. Only recently, U.S. citizens have started to question why marijuana is illegal. I feel that it would be beneficial to discard these laws and beliefs of the past. We need to analyze how the legalization of marijuana would positively affect the United States and its citizens in the following fields: medical, criminology, and financial.

For many generations, the legalization of marijuana has been a great debate but recently this debate has gained much attention. For many years the United States and other nations have spent millions on the ‘war on drugs’, although this war is not successful. The legalization of marijuana would not only be a brake-threw movement but would help many issues the United States is facing today. Cannabis has legitimate medical effects. The sales in many states have shown a great increase in revenue, not to mention prohibition has enormous social cost. Many may argue that the legalization would lead to higher use in other drugs, although studies show marijuana is not a gateway drug.

To Some people, it’s a relaxing herb, something to temporarily pull the mind from reality. The aroma is unmistakable, the potency various, and there are roughly sixty five million people smoking it. I’m talking about Cannabis Sativa, the illegal strain of hemp known as marijuana. This plant provides many medical benefits that far outweigh the side effects. It has yet to be proven to be addictive or deadly. Marijuana as it stands right now is an illegal narcotic, but I think the drug, with it’s physical, psychological, spiritual, but most importantly, medical benefits, should be legalized.
