Beyond Academia
Students should not be able to play sports with a low GPA. Students should have good grades to play sports, because it is not fair to other students who play sports and keep their grades up. You can not get into college just for sports. You need to have a high GPA too. Other people need sports to help them get good grades. Student athletes should have to maintain a certain grade point average to participate in sports because it helps them develop life skills, gives them a future, and helps them with their confidence.
If students have a high GPA, it will help them with life skills in the future. A certain life skill might be organization. Being organized helps you find all the things you need for a job or
Colleges frequently refer to a student's GPA when they apply, since it can provide a nice summary of them academically. Gym is not a purely academic class, however. It is difficult to improve a Gym grade by studying a worksheet or taking better notes. Colleges, therefore, are examining athletic achievements along with academic ones, which is unfair. It is unrealistic to think it matters that “the debate team captain cannot get a home run. It should not be a huge deal that the valedictorian cannot swim.”(Hakimian and Kim 1). A GPA can be the only way you are accepted into a college for some people, or even the only chance you have at a scholarship. Two people could have the exact same grades in every class except Gym, giving one a slightly higher GPA, making them more likely to receive a academic scholarship than the other. The higher GPA is not a result of better academic ability, but athletic ability, which should not be considered for a scholarship based on your academics. GPA starts to be influenced by athletic ability when you include Gym, and for those who are not, it is shutting down windows of freedom for
Athletes at school might get carried away just focusing on their sport. Playing a sport might not be a distraction and the student could just be stressing academically. They might be using their hobby to relieve stress, but this can lead throwing away their education as well. Education should be the number one priority. Honor roll, or just average grades in general, will increase the chances of students getting accepted to the college of their choice. If an individual wants to do the things he or she loves, college will play an important factor. Setting this rule for athletes will motivate them to do well in school if they really love the sport they
Academic success is important for both high school and college athletes. To be eligible to participate, athletes must maintain a certain GPA. Student athletes that don’t make school a priority, not only miss out on playing time, but also fail to prepare themselves for the next step in their life. For high school athletes, that means prepare for college while for college athlete, it means preparing to enter the workforce. Although, both high school and
Should grades determined if you are allowed to play sports or be in any extracurricular activities? Some say no and a lot say yes. In this essay you will see both sides. While also seeing why I agree with the C rule. The C rule is what most schools are doing, and trying to get all of the schools to follow this rule. The C rule is a policy which states “ That in order for students to participate in extracurricular activities, they must have at least a C average in each of their required classes.” If you think about it they're not asking for much with this new policy.
Should there be grade requirement for athletics? Should athletes have to be on the honor roll in order to play? Many states and schools have many different opinions to both questions.
Primarily, a “C” average should not be required for student athletes to play sports on a school team because it discourages many students. A student may be born to be an athlete, but can be struggling to keep up academically in school. If a student is rejected from playing the sport they love because of their other struggles, this will discourage them. This can hurt a student. For example, a student may reject a challenging, but interesting class in fear of getting a bad grade. **Opponents of this argument may say that forcing students to have a “C” average will encourage them to do well in school.** In reality, a student will be dejected enough to drop out of school. In other words, some students may give up completely, rather than trying
Should high school athletes be required to have a 2.5 GPA to play? Considering athletics consume a significant amount of time, athletes should set time aside for academics as well. Student athletes should have at least 2.5 GPA to be eligible for a sport because they need to give 100% for both school and sports, managing their time, and also are held to a higher expectation.
High school sports make student athletes strive for better success in their education. Sure some Schools have a minimum G.P.A requirement of 2.0, and to get that all your classes have to be “C” or better. Well that’s better than letting them have a 1.0 and letting them play. It makes them have something worth studying for, For example my friend Bryan Garcia does not like school or work but he is always looking for ways to make his grades better so that he may play with the John F. Kennedy soccer team. Also not all the states in the United States of America have a G.P.A requirement to play in a sport activity, twelve out of the fifty states in the USA require a G.P.A to play."A High School Athlete 's GPA Vs. Average High School Student 's GPA." Everyday Life. N.p., n.d. Also they made a study for Kansas in 2008-2009 between athletes and non-athletes,Academic Performance Of Athletes And Non‐Athletes, and Page 41. COMPARING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES AND NON-ATHLETES IN KANSAS IN 2008-2009 (n.d.): n. pag. Student athletes have a greater chance of graduating with a 3.0 or more. They are more
The bodily harm that can be caused from playing at the collegiate can disastrous to players bodies for years to come. Each year there are thousands of injuries associated with playing college sports. While some maybe miner, others can cause irreversible damage that may leave players paralyzed or badly injured. Colleges and universities usually don’t continue to pay for medical coverage for those who are injured badly and need long term care. So, young players are left to fend for themselves with no way to pay for medical bills. They are putting their bodies and futures on the line to participate in sports that could result in permanent damage to their bodies. With such a high risk of calamity college students should be compensated to insure they have money they could use when they are unable to play college sports.
In professional basketball and football, it is very fun to see young, flashy, and new star athletes to seemingly come out of nowhere. Athletes such as Kobe Bryant and Lebron James jumped straight from high school, went to play professional basketball, and did very well. This seems like a great idea, but also considering the athlete as a person is important. What happens if he does not perform well? He could lose out on a lot of money and could be in big trouble if he did not go to college. Athletes want to become professionals as soon as possible, but they also could consider getting a degree. The issue of making college a requirement for professional football and basketball athletes is one that makes many people wonder if athletes should actually
By making student athletes be required to maintain a minimum of a 70 percent in all of their classes, they would be more likely to succeed in college. Many colleges require a 70 percent or higher just in order to pass their classes. Also, on average only approximately 5 percent of high school athletes play college athletics in the NCAA. With so few people making it to play college athletics, academic excellence should be stressed.
high schools students should be allowed to play high school football. Football in general is a dangerous sport that could lead students into severe injuries and even death. Not only this but we can't make the sport less dangerous because we would get rid of tackling but however stated in the article “ football isn't football without tackling”.Football is the most popular sport but however it is becoming less popular through the year since 2009. Finally some high schools are already thinking of getting rid of the program or got rid of it.
A students success can determine how the rest of their life will play out. If a student is unsuccessful and gets bad grades it will give them a harder life. Adults with an A average from highschool

Athletics are one of the largest sources of revenue for a college, but tends to come at the cost of student's education. Athletes are preparing to compete at the collegiate level well before time has come to even consider a college. Some high schools have instituted grade point average, GPA, requirements for student participation in athletics. Installing the requirement motivates students to work harder in school. This is positive because it allows for an increase in the athletes' knowledge an opportunity to be successful in both academics and athletics in college.
