Similarities Between Assyrians And Persian Empires

The Assyrian and Persian empires were two key empires in early history that became powerful each in their own right. When comparing these two empires, there were similarities and differences.
Assyria initially began in a city in north Mesopotamia called Assur and then expanded throughout Mesopotamia, most of southern Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt with a substantially sized, ruthless military. Persia began in what is now known as Iran and eventually defeated the Assyrian empire to create a larger empire than the Assyrian empire. Similarities between the Assyrian and Persian empires include the success of each empire in its own time and each empire demanding tributes (or taxes) from every region, albeit in different manners.
When discussing the differences between the Assyrian and Persian empires, it is important to discuss the military, how each empire ruled, and their cultures.
The Assyrians were extremely cruel, yet efficient with military conquests. The Assyrians destroyed and oppressed their enemies. The Persians also had a tremendously large military. Sections of the Assyrian empire were ruled by appointed governors and military officers. Any remaining conquered people were relocated to other areas of the empire to weaken resistance. The Persians were just and tolerant. The Persian empire allowed the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild their nation. They also tolerated varied religious beliefs of the conquered nations. The keys to Persian rule were tolerance and restoration as stated in The Western Heritage textbook. The Persians rebuilt the conquered cities and allowed the people to return.
