There are a number of both public and independent colleges and universities located within the city of Austin. The broad variety of schools in the city includes the esteemed University of Texas at Austin, the highly-ranked St Edwards University, and popular Austin Community College.

University of Texas
The University of Texas at Austin – or UT Austin – is a public research university located 1 mile from the Texas State Capitol. Founded in 1883, UT Austin is the flagship school of the University of Texas System.

Austin Community College
This public college has 11 campuses and centers located throughout Austin. The college offers 2-year associate degrees and certificates in over 100 areas of study, including Accounting, Nursing, English, Art, Marketing, Psychology and Biology.

The Austin Community College enrolled its first class of 1,726 students in 1973. Today, the school enrols more than 43,000 credit students and 15,000 non-credit students each year – making it the second largest college in the state. ACC is the college of choice among Austin's high school graduates, as well as a leader in university transfer.

Organizations at the university include a newspaper, a radio station and a television station – all run by students. There is also a marching band and a drama club for students to join.
