The protagonists in David Benioff’s and D.B. Weiss’s Game of Thrones and Edward Zick’s The Last Samurai possess identical values; however, each character shows their values significantly different from each other. In Game of Thrones follows the life of Eddard Stark, a loyal, honourable, and responsible father trying to survive in a ruthless world in Westeros. In comparison, The Last Samurai follows the life of Nathan Algren, a civil war veteran who uses alcoholic as a way to escape from his traumatic past. Both Eddard and Nathan possess the same characteristics that makes them similar to each other. Eddard and Nathan both acquire similar attributes of honour, responsibility and compassion. Upon closer examination, however, we can see that they enact their identical values differently.
First, Eddard from Game of Thrones and Nathan from the movie, The Last Samurai both show honour but the way they demonstrate it was distinct. For instance, Eddard was a devoted man who attained such honour. When he was young, he casts his dignity aside by bringing shame upon himself and to his family by falsifying infidelity in order to keep his sister Lyanna’s word. Her wish was to falsify her son’s identity in order to keep him out of danger. He was so honourable that he sacrificed his own to keep Lyanna’s honour in order to protect someone she loves. Meanwhile, Nathan admired the Samurais and in return, he developed sense of protectiveness. Not to mention, he protected the samurais against
Prince Hal’s destiny is shaped for him by many forces: his association with the ne'er-do-well Falstaff, the expectations of his father, King Henry IV, and the constant comparison between himself and Hotspur. All three of these forces create in Hal a sense of honor that is an integral part of his education as the ideal king, and throughout the action of Henry IV, Part I, Hal is gaining a knowledge of honor that will shape him into the King that he will become. However, it seems that Hal ultimately chooses one form on honor over the other, although he must compare the honor of Falstaff and the conceptual honor of a chivalric hero before he comes to a final conclusion.
Document A shows the feudal social structures in both Japan and Europe. When defining samurai and knights it read, “Warriors who owned loyalty and military service to daimyos or lord for land,” both samurai and knights were awarded for their pledged loyalty with land for them and their families. Document E states that “both samurai and knights were both expected to abide by a code of honor.” Although the honor code that Japanese warriors followed was different than the one of the European knights, they had the same general idea. A warrior had to be honest, loyal, and just and if they ever ignored or dishonored their duty as a warrior then it would bring shame, not only on them but their whole
Both narratives compare as timeless tales of reputable heroes. They both include similar plots of long journeys back home. The main characters’ flaws are arrogance which is the source of many of their troubles.

The movie The Last Samurai directed by Edward Zwick is about an American War Captain named Nathan Algren who is hired to train, lead and modernize a group of Japanese soldiers to defeat a rebellion of the country's remaining Samurai in 1876. Algren is captured by the Samurai and soon becomes part of the village he is being held hostage in. There, Algren learns from the Samurai and comes to respect them. He finds that his true warrior is becoming unleashed as he trains to become a Samurai with the very people we once called his
The similarities between samurais and knights were greater than the differences due to the similarity in the hierarchy and the armor they used to protect themselves. The Samurai were “warriors who owed loyalty and military service to daimyos for land or regular payment.” They made up about 10% of Japan’s population. Similarly, knights were “warriors who owed loyalty and military service to the lord for land.” (Document A) There were about 12,000 knights in England and Normandy, France in the 12th century. Even though Japan and Europe had no communication or access to each other, both areas placed the warrior classes in the middle of the hierarchy and owed loyalty/military services. Most humans create a facade which they hide behind. A person will create an identity that fits their expected role in their family, community, and society. All of these factors play into the human ideal because no one expectation of an ideal human matches another, but people still want to meet the expectations of the people around them. One common thread comes from even under the mask that all humans wear. Within The Odyssey by Homer, The Republic by Plato, and The Holy Bible, honor is able to play a role into a human’s life in many different ways; it is what pushes people into becoming the leader, teacher, and follower of what is believed in, and honor is what creates an ideal human.
The knights and samurai, the warriors who are alike in training, armor, and code, but yet different in many ways. An example of a similarity is from Document A it says,”The rigorous training of samurai began in childhood.” Like the samurai the knights started training at about the age 4 or 5 until they both would become the warriors they were supposed to be. Although they are alike they are different for example at age 14 a page boy wouldn’t become a knight, but become a squire. Were as a samurai in training would become a samurai at 14. My next example of similarity is about both their armors, which comes from Documents C and D. Across cultures and time, honor and manliness have been inextricably tied together. In many cases, they were synonymous. Honor lost was manhood lost. Because honor was such a central aspect of a man’s masculine identity, men would go to great lengths to win honor and prevent its loss. This concept of honor is displayed in Edmond Rostand’s dramatic work, Cyrano De Bergerac.
Power inevitably instills vanity in those who hold it, and thus, chaos and negligence in government cannot be avoided. However, despite this corruption in leadership, civilization can continue to function with morality from where it is least expected. The lowly Dogberry and watchmen provide the evidence that enables everyone to have a happy ending, and Hal, whom everyone regarded as a total disgrace, heroically saves the king from death. Without this unanticipated honor though, society does fall to tragedy as seen in the demise of nearly every character in the greedy, power hungry world of King Lear. Therefore, because of this great importance of unexpected integrity, everyone, regardless of class, holds a responsibility to act with the dignity that once solely belonged to the privileged. It is clear that Honor plays a huge role in the practices of Samurais. This is made clear in the beginning of the text. He makes it clear that it is important to make sure they bring honor to their descendants, rather than just themselves.
In Milun, honor has a big place in the story. For example, Milun must go to the other country to fight the one knight who claims to be better than him to defend his honor. Although when he realizes he has been beat by him he shows respect for him because he has truly been beat. His son also shows respect when he sees his gray hair and recognizes that he had hurt an older man. This shows the good side of chivalry where the knights respected each other and good duels.
Some would say that honor is a thing of the past; a thing long since extinct with the King Arthur and the knights of the round table. In fact, it is not, it is real and can still be seen all around through people all the time. In Charles Dicken’s novel, A Tale of Two Cities, honor and dishonor are main themes that are exemplified and enacted through many characters. To be honorable, or to act in honor, is to act in a way that is not necessarily socially acceptable, but is morally right, noble, and kind. To be dishonorable is to neglect the basic responsibility of treating every human being in the respectful manner they deserve, giving no variance to rank or status. Throughout the book different men show varying degrees of honor and dishonor.
According to the World Youth Alliance, “A person’s understanding of their own cultural identity develops from birth and is shaped by the values and attitudes prevalent at home and the surrounding, noting that the cultural identity, in its essence, relates to our need to belong” along with personal experiences shaping every person into who they are. Reaching the highest potential of one's identity is influenced by factors that begin as early as birth; starting from the family in which you are born into, to the decisions affected by one’s surroundings. Displaying certain characteristics, eventually helps create the person one is destined to be. Going back to the “heroic age” in which the epic poem Beowulf was set it, the Anglo - Saxon society set valuable expectations as to what made up a hero, and how to live up to them. Men who displayed traits such as bravery, loyalty, and even being religious were looked up upon. Living by these were essential to live up to the “heroic code”, the ultimate test to one’s place in this society. These ways of life were being pressured into men of this era, such as Beowulf. Through Beowulf’s pride and heroic characteristics, he is able to own up to the man he was held accountable to be, through living by these codes of morality.
A person of honor has dignity, high public esteem, and honesty. It is no surprise that Shakespeare doesn’t make the concept of honor simple, specifically in his play King Henry IV: Part One, the word becomes ambiguous. The value and interpretation of the theme changes with each character; some consider the framework as praiseworthy while others argue it is completely insignificant. The characters Hotspur, Falstaff, King Henry IV, and Prince Hal present their own understandings of honor which mirror their personalities and consciousness. In comparing and contrasting each of their translations, the character’s true being is better understood.
