Education has been an important factor of all of our lives for an exceptional amount of time, but unfortunately, America has been falling behind from other nations in their education system compared to other nations (Pahlke 444). Almost all of our public schools in our country are coeducational and only handful of them are single-sex educational schools. Single-sex education should be taken into high consideration for most students to attend because of the benefits they might gain from them. It is important to look at all possible ways to try and better our education system for the benefit of the children and teenagers attending school. Another example of students being more focused in single-sex classrooms is when Hoffman, in his article "The Effect of Single-Sex Instruction in a Large, Urban, At-Risk High School", mentions: Girls reported SSI as academically preferable because there were fewer disruptions (Parker & Rennie, 2002), better opportunities to concentrate on work (Mullholland et al., 2004), and diminished feelings of embarrassment for speaking up in class (Jackson & Smith, 2000; McCoy, 1995). Girls also have claimed that they were disadvantaged in CE classrooms (Jackson & Smith) and that SSI classes offered more support, less hassle, and less ridicule and teasing from peers (Parker & Rennie).(Hoffman 16)
It is clearly noted that the students were in fact more focused in the classrooms without the opposite sex being present which substantially will be a major benefit for our country in helping it increase our academic level back to the top or to be even with the countries that our currently ahead of us in that aspect. Not only are the students more focused in the classrooms with single-sex classrooms, but they also feel more comfortable with each other and aren't very concerned with the way they look. They don't need to be worrying about impressing anyone because everyone there is of the same gender so it would be a waste of their time if they tried to impress one another. Although this may seem bad and shouldn't happen it's really not. Kids in single sex classes will have more of a chance to succeed than students in non single sex class because of most kids have no problem with this in their school, less discipline, and most of all higher grades.
An article that was written about a school in Texas stated that more than 50% of boys and girls in single-gender classrooms cause disruptions, and they bring their behavior from home into the classrooms at school. In an article, it stated that “in October of 2006, federal regulations established the requirements for legally permissible single-sex schools and classes within the public system; nearly 200 schools in South Carolina have single-gender classrooms” (“Single-Sex Education Spreads” 2). Teachers’ interest often drives the attention of students to single-gender classes, and growing interest from their parents is also pushing more schools and districts as they hear about these classrooms (“Single-Gender Classrooms” 2). While teachers and administrators prefer this environment, boys and girls in single-sex classrooms are influenced to distract and be distracted by their friends, and the people around them. They seem to doodle, daydream, and lose their thought in the classroom because of their surroundings. The typical classroom consists an image of boys and girls coexisting, working together, and learning in the same way. As when you walk into certain schools you will see rooms with blue walls with race cars on it, while other rooms will have pink walls with flowers on it. These classrooms would be single-gender. Many students or parent is not given an option of single-sex classrooms without it being a private school and costing hundreds of dollars. Schools should be able to offer students more than one option without having a distraction of the opposite gender.

Almost all of the schools who have switched to single-sex classes have seen an improvement in the student's academics. In two years, five schools that use single-sex classes have seen a 50% decrease in disciplinary referrals. Although coed classes build better social skills for later on in life, schools should switch to single gender classes. Making the switch will help students to be more focused and less distracted, learn to be more academically competitive, and promote better grades.
This surprised me because I never really thought about how people even took into consideration calculating gaps between boys and girls. I feel like that could be a reason why we have a few issues regarding gender when it comes to the classroom. I have always thought that girls did better in certain topics and boys did well in the other ones, but studies have shown from our research that that is really not the case. It’s easy to that coed classrooms aren’t an issue and that all kids learn better from being surrounded by boys and girls, but we had also talked about single sex classrooms and the benefits of those. The class had a lot to say about this too because I think people really do like the idea of single sex schools but on the flip side some people really don’t. From most of the research I did and from asking people their opinions they say that single sex classrooms are extremely beneficial and I found that to be super interesting. Firstly, single gender classrooms are easier for students to learn in. As stated in the text, boys and girls tend to differentiate when it comes to abilities and learning subjects. It is arguable if opposite genders should learn the same subjects in school due to how differently they learn. Single gender classrooms are also less of a distraction. During a debate in the 1800s opponents of coeducational schools cited, “The need to protect girls both from danger to their health and from boys.” Boys are more likely to “show out” if girls are around to impress, taking away from school time and learning.
