Slaves in the South performed many different types of labor. Many of the slave population performed as field laborers conducting agricultural work. Some of the labors performed by Southern slaves included cultivating cotton which involved 55% of the population, growing tobacco which involved 10% and producing sugar, rice and hemp involved the other 10%.

Describe the treatment of slaves in the South as compared to the lives of urban workers in the North during this time period.

During the fifthteenth century, when the Europeans first colonized the North American continent, the land was tremendous, the work was cruel and there was not sufficient work of labor. The land needed to be worked on; thus, many people developed toned to pay for work through the use of indentured servant. However, indentured servants did not provide enough labor for the vast land. Although, the indentured servants improved a lot of the work issue, much still needed to be done. Around the seventeenth century, African American servants were brought to the colonies by a Dutch ship. The working and living conditions of the enslaved Africans in the New World were inhumane. It was brutal, degrading, and stripped the slaves of their humanities. They were met with harsh physical abuse such as whipping, beating, shackling, mutilation, branding, imprisonment, and even sexual abuse. Slaves were usually beat if they were disobedient, but some were beat by their owners to solely assert dominance. The barracks that the slaves were kept in were tightly packed and securely locked down to prevent anyone from escaping, usually with barbed wire at the top. Slaves received hardly any food and water and were malnourished, some even dying from this.

How was the life of African American slaves in the south? The life of the African Americans was very hard. Slaves were used and tortured. These events were terrible or horrible. In the south, in 1860 there were about 400,000 slaves kept in households. Almost four million African Americans remained slavery. African Americans were living in bad places. Slaves extended their own culture, fellowship, and community. They joined Americans and Africans as an element to create a new culture (433). Communication and being together is important in their lives.

White historians in the past described the relationship between slavery in the American South and the rising political power and economic growth of the United States as i.e. timely unrelated. Furthermore, white historians believed that slavery had no impact on America’s modern economy or industrialization. Perhaps slavery wasn't considered a “modern” institution because to acknowledge it as a modern act in society would be to recognize it as something commonplace in that specific day and age.

What does it mean to be a slave? Ask any human being, and they will state that they too have been a slave. Being a slave to addiction, to a slave in a relationship, a slave to anxiety, a slave to work, maybe a slave to mental illness, and a slave to one's self-being. Sure, there may be moments in one's life that makes them feel like they have no other choice but to give in. However, there are some things that these people have that is a privilege, the right to say "no," the liberty to decide, and the freedom to act on decisions, to prohibit the temporary entrapment of, obstacles. African American slavery twisted the definition of what it was to be a slave. It meant that one is a product, and a tiny element apart of a more significant something,

Slavery has long inspired controversy among historians. Many have different views on slavery whether it was slaves lived under kind masters, or slavery was a brutal system that drove slaves into constant rebellion, but neither viewpoint is accurate although both contain some truth in it. Many masters wanted to earn profit off of slaves no matter what because some masters were kind causing the slaves to develop genuine affection for their owners. Although slaves had affection for owners they did not even question themselves when deciding to desert to Union lines when northern troops descended on the plantations during the Civil War. The experience of slaves working on cotton plantations in the 1830s and 1700s differed because of reasons unrelated to the kindness or brutality of masters. More of reasons like the plantation system, the work and discipline, the slave family, and the longevity, health, and diet of slaves.

With many public schools in the United States debating on the censorship of American history courses, it is more important than ever to recall all the details of the past, including the dehumanizing institution of slavery. In his book, Fredrick Douglass provides a personal account of his life as a slave, and he poses the philosophical question of what it means to be a free individual. This piece of literature should be a required reading for all American students in order to understand the causes of slavery and to enlighten students on the powers of education

Slavery has always been the most shocking phenomena of our world. Slavery, by itself seems very unnatural and provokes mixed feelings from the heart of each person. Some faced “slavery” even in the contemporary times. And some people just simply do not understand the possibility of one human being considering another human being its Slave. Slavery is the practice or system of owning Slaves. Acquiring education is one of the most critical aspects of a person’s life. It should be seen as vital as the air we breathe. The key to a healthy mind and a successful person is learning. “Without education, you’re not going anywhere in this world” is a famous quote by Malcolm X. His quote reiterates that the competitive world makes it essential for us to have a proper education since it will serve as our weapon to conquer the world. Education will help a person grow as an individual because a highly knowledgeable person will have a better grip on handling any problem that comes his or her way. Literacy is the foundation of what we are as individuals. Every decision we make, as well as our thought process, is the basis of what we know.
