The existence of the slaves in the south was hard, also a persistent labor forced and abuse. They utilize them as field hand growing sugar, rice, tobacco, and most of the time cotton, but also they place them to work as house servants, artisans, carpenters, or ironworkers and countless of jobs took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, Charleston and South Carolina. Slaves in the South performed many different types of labor. Many of the slave population performed as field laborers conducting agricultural work. Some of the labors performed by Southern slaves included cultivating cotton which involved 55% of the population, growing tobacco which involved 10% and producing sugar, rice and hemp involved the other 10%.

Hip hop/rap has been a staple of the music world of late, and is most prevalent among the African American community. Modern day hip-hop/rap seems to be flooded with references to socioeconomic status, money and branding, as well as violence. Drummer, DJ, music journalist, and record producer, Ahmir Khalib Thompson, most notably known as Questlove summed up the nature of the hip hop/rap industry when he said the following:

The working and living conditions of the enslaved Africans in the New World were inhumane. It was brutal, degrading, and stripped the slaves of their humanities. They were met with harsh physical abuse such as whipping, beating, shackling, mutilation, branding, imprisonment, and even sexual abuse. Slaves were usually beat if they were disobedient, but some were beat by their owners to solely assert dominance. The barracks that the slaves were kept in were tightly packed and securely locked down to prevent anyone from escaping, usually with barbed wire at the top. Slaves received hardly any food and water and were malnourished, some even dying from this.

Slavery has long inspired controversy among historians. Many have different views on slavery whether it was slaves lived under kind masters, or slavery was a brutal system that drove slaves into constant rebellion, but neither viewpoint is accurate although both contain some truth in it. Many masters wanted to earn profit off of slaves no matter what because some masters were kind causing the slaves to develop genuine affection for their owners. Although slaves had affection for owners they did not even question themselves when deciding to desert to Union lines when northern troops descended on the plantations during the Civil War. The experience of slaves working on cotton plantations in the 1830s and 1700s differed because of reasons unrelated to the kindness or brutality of masters. More of reasons like the plantation system, the work and discipline, the slave family, and the longevity, health, and diet of slaves.
