As I read through these chapters I found that I related to many of the topics that were covered in these two chapters. One of the things that I did not realize was the sleep patterns of the “normal” person in which the mind or brain will go through out the night. I thought that the mind just goes into REM sleep after a certain point. I have a trouble sleeping through out the night all the way through, I will normally wake up several times of the night or not go to sleep at all. Some of this is because of my legs, knees, they start to hurt. Once I am awake I find it difficult to go back to sleep. I do take medicine to keep them from hurting but it doesn’t always work. I have medicines for many things that I deal with. But if you go through
“The Seems The Glitch in Sleep” by John Hulme and Michael Wexler. I think the main message is if you don’t solve the problem quick enough, the problem will get bigger. I think this because the the glitch is getting worse, if Becker doesn’t do something, the glitch will get worse. In the story, Becker had a very bad nightmare. It was made by three giant bed bugs torturing him. The glitch was moving very fast. After that there was the ripple effect, it is when the world have strange and very bad things happen. Then Becker got tortured by the bed again but this time his assistant Simly, helped. Then the bed bugs, Becker, and Simly fell down to the floor below.
For my first PLE I will write a response to chapter four about sleep and activity during sleep. Sleep is a very important part of everyday life because without it our bodies would be deprived. Sleep is split into a few different categories, some being REM sleep or rapid eye movement. REM sleep is often called active sleep because it is associated with heightened body and brain activity during which dreams normally occur. Then there is NREM sleep or non rapid eye movement sleep. This is where the brain and the body go into a dormant sleep where there is hardly any brain activity This NREM sleep is broken down into four stages which i will explain later. The first 90 minutes of sleep are the most important because that is the point where you
I have completed the sleep assessment and I am not surprise with the outcome it gave me. The results showed that my sleep habits could be better. Some days are better than others, but generally, I do wake up drowsy and hitting my alarm clock once or twice. I admit, I usually stay up on my phone past midnight like any other young adult. If it is not my phone that is keeping me up at night, it’s usually my mind reminding me of all the stress that may be going on in my life.
Thesis: Sleep plays an essential part in a person’s health and well-being; the way we feel while awake is dependent upon what happens to your body while asleep.
his is a book of many virtues. It gives us an insider look at the birth of the sleep medicine specialty. It provides, in clear entertaining, first person-prose a first rate primer on the latest {"indings in sleep science. It speaks with the voice of a mature, humane, sane, and brilliant clinician. Most impressively it lays out in convincing detail the argument for the theory of the 24 mind. That theory, as I understand it, suggests that selected regions of the mind/brain are active and functional 24 hours a day. The
Sleep is essential to life; it is one of several components, including food and water, which keep the living alive. However, a significant percentage of the human population has considerable difficulty reaching and maintaining Stage IV within their sleeping patterns, the stage that allows the mind and body to fall into a deep and restorative sleep, otherwise known as REM sleep. At the core of this difficulty is a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, a "serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood" (Sleep Apnea). Indeed, obstructive sleep apnea can be very dangerous if it is not properly detected and treated.
Robert Bly’s “Waking from Sleep” explores the thoughts and events that occur at night as the country recovers from the war that has just occurred. In the first stanza of the poem, the narrator is addressing the war, the reader can confirm this because he states “tiny explosions at the waterlines” (line2) and “wind of the salty blood” (line 3). The reader is immediately informed that a war has occurred because of the navies setting forth, tiny explosions and salty blood. In the second stanza, the narrator is describing the months after the war. The memories still remain of the tragic events that have occurred. In the third stanza things for the narrator start looking brighter. The country is now rising from bed and waking up. However, the memories of those who have passed away are remembered as their shouts are heard from the harbor. Throughout the fourth, and final stanza the country is healing. The country is singing, and dancing in the kitchen. The author portrays that those who are lost are never forgotten, and the country is reminded of their memories every morning at dawn when silence sweeps the nation.
The neonatal or special care nursery environment is one of variable but constant movement, light and noise. Such an environment is not conducive to the entrainment of good sleep habits. Discuss the impact this environment has on preterm infants in terms of their neuropsychological development and sleep patterns. Consider the longer term implications, and the measures that can be taken to minimise or overcome these.
Sleep is an important part of life, which has a broad effect on your quality of your life. If you are not able to get enough sleep some common effects are looking bad, feeling moody which might lead to fights or arguments with others, and performing poorly at school or just generally in life. An example could be while driving, if you’re sleepy you’re more prone to get into a crash, which of course isn’t good. Some other effects of lack of sleep are being more prone to injury, sickness, stress, acne and gaining weight. Furthermore, you might develop sleeping disorders, such as narcolepsy, insomnia or sleep apnea. Altogether, sleep is essential
The average human spends about 25 years of their life sleeping. That is equal to one-third of a person’s life. So if sleep is vital and common among every single human, what do you know about it? What happens when we sleep (Attention Grabber)? Before the 1950s, scientists believed that the brain would just “shut off” when we would go to sleep. It wasn’t until the discovery of the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) state that scientists really looked into what happens in the brain while we are asleep. Studies have found that we go through a cycle of stages during sleep, and it is important for our health (Orientation to Topic). Today, I am going to inform you about what really happens when we sleep, and some issues that are found among it (Specific Purpose). In order to really understand this worldwide commonality, you need to know some background on sleep, the stages in the cycle, and some common disorders (Central Idea). I have taken a year long psychology course that went into depth on sleep psychology, and I have done extensive research on the topic to better grasp it (Statement of Credibility). I want to inform you on sleep so you can understand what happens when you close your eyes every night, and so you can detect any irregularities in your sleep pattern (Statement of Goodwill). First, I will give a background of why and how we know to sleep, then I will explain the stages in the sleep cycle, and finally I will tell you about some common disorders (Preview).
Research in the sleep lab has determined that the majority of our dreams are in color. Bob Van de Castle, a psychologist that studied dreams reported that when dreamers were awakened during a dream, distinct color was reported in 70% of the cases and vague color in another 13%. So why don’t we recall color in our dreams? Recalling color is likely subject to the same mechanisms as recalling any image in a dream, or remembering the dream at all. The sleep stage prior to waking might have something to do with color recall. Research says that people awakened from REM sleep report more colorful and story-like dreams, whereas people from non-REM state of sleep report more thought-like with little storyline or color. The nature or degree of our
Dreams have a lengthy record of being a subject for debate and a source of motivation. In ancient Egypt, pharaohs had several interpreters to decipher their dreams as they believed they were messages from the gods (Lincoln, 1935, p.68). The ancient Hebrews believed that their dreams were tied to divine revelations as well. Native American tribes believed that dreams were a connection to their ancestors and used obtaining a vision from a dream as a rite of passage (Tedlock, 1981, p.324). In the present day, every night all across the world, people still experience sequences of imagery encompassed by sensations and emotions while asleep. The average person tends to dream up to seven times a night
The aspect of vulnerability is a huge part of being human. This can come in many forms, including vulnerability with oneself. The main idea of the song “Sleeping Sickness” by City and Color is the self vs self battle that comes with anxiety and depression. “The worries that occupy the back of my mind” is an example of a synecdoche and demonstrates how thoughts can entirely take over one’s life. It suggests that his mind is occupied with these worries and therefore he can not focus on anything else. “Maybe I'll sleep when I am dead but now it's like the night is taking sides” shows how overwhelming thoughts that come along with both anxiety and depression can even affect one's sleep. When the day is not there to distract these thoughts they
Sleep disorders have always surrounded me through family and friends. though I never suffered with any sort of sleeping disorder, I was well aware of how unnerving it can be toothless who suffer from it. I did not know all of the different types there were, and was intrigued when reading chapter three of my psychology book. I had assumed that nigh terrors, which I used to think were the same as nightmares, were over exaggerations of a person’s scary dream. Sleepwalking also held interesting facts that I didn’t know prior. Having a best friend who occasionally sleepwalks, I was always interested in why she would seldom remember both walking and talking. I also appreciated learning about sleep apnea because my father used to struggle with it and would worry my mom about his breathing when he was asleep.
If you have a roommate that comes back to your room at all hours of the night, this can severely affect your life as a whole. Sleep is essential to the human body performing in a variety of tasks. If you are constantly being woken up at various times throughout the night, it can have negative consequences on your impact to learn and your health. So what does a typical night’s sleep schedule look like?
