Yosemite National Park is located in the northern California area, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Yosemite was the first both state and national park in the U.S., it was also the first piece of land to be set aside by the United State government for preservation and protection. In present day over 3 million people visit Yosemite each year. Visitors get to experience the park’s 800 miles of hiking trails and 282 miles of road amongst for many other things. The park received its name from the American Indian tribe that first lived in that area the tribe known as the Ahwahneechee Indian in the 1800’s. But in about 1849 the gold rush began and brought thousands of non-Indian miners and settlers to the park. Not too long after that, our current president at the time Abraham Lincoln declared protection for the park. Which was all to prevent any further damage done to the park.

This essay is a case study analysis of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), which was formed in 1876. The AMC was established to bring people together to conserve and enjoy the out-door wilderness. Volunteerism has been a major tradition of the AMC, which separates the club from other environmental organizations. AMC’s close group of volunteers gives the club a sense of community. AMC operated for years as a highly decentralized, highly voluntarily managed organization, but as memberships grew, and chapters formed, the organization would need to hire paid staff. By the late 1970s to late 80s, AMC was faced with financial deficits. Thus, by 1989 Harvard MBA graduate Andy Falender was employed as the new executive director of AMC. Falender would restructure the club, and fix its financial crisis.

John Muir is arguably the most influential conservationist in American history. He was an active member in the preservation of the American wilderness from the late 1800’s until he passed in 1914. Muir is often referred to as the “Father of the National Parks” because of his efforts in the establishment of several National Parks. One of the biggest flaws of American history textbooks in need of change is the fact that they do not include the conservationists who have preserved the environment so today the same beauty can be see the way that they saw it. The political dangers of the Santa Fe Trails are not unique to a time period; they were however differed in severity only shared across the timeline. Throughout the nineteenth century, the Southwest faced a range of challenges, including the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), which was fought over the disputed boundary of Texas after it was annexed in 1845. The Mexicans and the Native Americans continued to cause problems for political agents in the Southwest. Challenges in the Southwest such as the relations with the Mexicans and Native Americans continued through to The American Civil War, 1861-65. James Silas Calhoun (b.1802) was made Indian Agent in 1851 by President Fillmore. His political history begins in 1825 working within Georgia Legislature, starting as a Democratic he became a Whig in the early 1830’s. He died in Independence Missouri in 1852. James Calhoun’s correspondence illustrates a wide range of circumstances from which the political situation can be deduced. The correspondence covers the period of his time in office: 1849-52. Alongside other contemporary accounts the details of the political situation can be concurred across the timeline, although the situation adapted over the time period of this study. Accounts from Captain William Becknell and William Ryus give further details of the Santa Fe Trail before and after James Calhoun’s correspondence. Becknell and Ryus travelled the Trail in 1821 and 1860 respectively; Becknell was the first one to travel

In June 1864 the Yosemite Land Grant was signed by Abraham Lincoln, which deeded 39,000 acres of the Mariposa Big Tree Grove and Yosemite Valley to the State of California (Hawken 40). It was an unprecedented piece of legislation, having almost universal support from private business, environmentalists and Congress. Sparked largely by the de-barking of “The Mother of the Forest”, one of the oldest sequoias in Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove, several years earlier (Hawken 39). The Yosemite Land Grant was the first piece of legislation founded on the principle that nature needed to be preserved and protected from humans (Hawken 40). After nearly a century of clearing many forests on the East Coast, affording protection to land on the West Coast was a novel concept.

Ever since my elementary years, I have maintained all “A”s grade, I always have interest in leadership and service, and I always thirst for a challenges and accomplishments.., things that I know will make a good fit to be a member of this prestigious organization.

From what I know about the National Honor Society, it has a unique drive. By having academic students unite groups of people and organize community service events, they maintain the well-being of their community. Because of this, it is incomparable to the functions of other clubs. The aspect of networking and building relationships is the only aspect I see that is similar to other clubs and organizations offered at Los Fresnos Schools. Though several may comprehend that joining the club will ensure their place in a university or add flair to their college applications, being a part of such a one-of-a-kind club is an opportunity to learn about how to be a leader and how to improve one’s community.

My 1st contention is national parks can actually negatively affect the environment, they draw thousands or even hundreds of thousands of visitors who all impact the environment, whether through pollution from cars or the impact of camping.
