I think the artist is able to communicate the bad condition of the ship and its crew is in. The mood of the work is scary and gloomy. The design and intensity of the waves, the changing weather, and the ships in the ocean seem to make the scene come alive. It really conveys a since of naturalism in the painting the way it depicts the environment around the ship.

The story “A Blizzard under blue sky” by Pam Houston is about a woman who is not happy and very depressed. She makes a decision to go out into the wilderness. The woman believes that this adventure is the best cure for her even if it means death. She refuses to take any drugs that her doctor tries to prescribe her. She suffers from depression. Her friend Alex is very concerned about his friend and wonders why she would go out knowing that a bad snow storm is headed that way. So he offers her something that she can stay warm with, he offers her a heavy sleeping bag that is thickly layered for the coldest of winter days for her

The poem of Washington crossing the Delaware describes how horrible the weather conditions were during their voyage. The painting also shows the weather conditions with the huge storm cloud behind the crew. One can also see the large chunks of jagged ice that surrounds the boat while the crew struggles to row (Leutze). The poem also talks about how ragged the crew looks from rowing through the storm. One can see in the painting how the crew are huddling together to shelter themselves from the wind and cold, while some are even wearing bloody bandages.

The third painting from the Impressionist era is that of artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775–1851). Turner’s “The Lake of Zug”, 1843 is a beautiful portrait painted in watercolor over graphite that were sketched based from Turner’s trip to the Swiss Alps. The color contrast is beautiful, the sight of the sun setting behind the mountains signifying the end of one day and the encouragement of another. I chose to study and analyze J.M.W. Turner’s Slave Ship for this project and found it to be very interesting. Immediately while looking at the piece you get a strong sense of emotion and drama that is being portrayed. There is a lot of depth and warmth in the colors that are used and wide swift brush strokes to create the images. The first image that caught my eye was of waves crashing on the left side of the painting. The white tips of the waves are very noticeable against the softer shades of the ocean. The colors chosen by Hokusai can also interpret feelings and emotions. The habitual feeling when seeing the color blue is sadness. Sadness and despair would be fitting emotions for this work, due to the giant wave about to crash upon the men in their boats. Blue can also emit a feeling of elegance. The composition of the print and how the lines of the wave flow can be considered a form of elegance.
