Hippies have forever changed the fashion world. Huge designers like Coco Chanel and Emilio Pucci continue to create new works inspired by what the hippies wore. Hippies believed fashion was all about wearing what you love. The very existence of hippies went against society norms; they were all about going against what society told them they had to be and was just about being yourself. However, typical items you could find hippies wearing included homemade beads, tie-dye clothes, headbands, and most women began wearing what men typically wore like jeans, but also loved flower print items. Before this time, women would never wear jeans, but today it’s common to find women in jeans, just like men used to wear.

After the Civil War, during the Reconstruction Era these amendments were put into place to give the African American the equality they deserved but to do this they had to make changes to the Constitution. For these action to happen, there must be a proposed amendment. These amendments must be proposed by Congress with a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives or by a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of the state legislatures. In Australia, the fashion of the 1960s emulated the political and cultural changes at the time. This fashion revolution was youth driven and showed their rejection of social standards. For women, the mini skirt came into trend, introduced by fashion icon Twiggy (Leslie Hornby). This above-the-knee skirt came into fashion in a revolt against people telling women how to express themselves and their bodies that came with the womens rights movement and the introduction of the pill. Men wore tunics, capes and more feminine clothing as pants became tighter and they dawned silk scarfs. These skirts revealed their legs as bodywear revealed their curves. Women's hairstyles even changed. Women either wore their hair very short or long and lanky. Also, peasant skirts, or granny dresses, and chunky shoes somehow came into fashion during this period of time too. By the end of the decade, unisex dressing was very popular especially with the hippies. Both sexes wore bell-bottom jeans, love beads, and embellished T-shirts. This was also the era of the Afro, which both sexes of African Americans wore.
Fashion is very important in modern day society, and can be seen all around. Most of what people know about fashion today came from the fashion during the renaissance. From the vibrant fabrics to the spectacular jewels, renaissance fashion has been thoroughly threaded in the fashion of modern society. Modern day women often wear shorty, fun gowns, tightly fitting jeans, and lower cut tops. Popular fashion trends for men in modern society include saggy jeans, V-neck shirts, and stylish watches. “A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so unbearable that we are compelled to alter it every six months” (Oscar Wilde). In the movie, the majority of the characters are teenagers in high school; teenagers were the driving force behind fashion during the nineteen fifties. As well as, the way teenagers and young women dressed was influenced by the rock n roll craze. Today, our fashion sense is way different than it was during that time period; however, our fashion would not be the way it is today if it was not for the trends that were popular throughout the fifties. In several ways, the nineteen fifties took a turn in the fashion industry, especially for the woman. Before, while the men were away fighting in World War II, women were sent to fill their spots in the factories. At this point in time the way women dressed was heavily restricted to where they must wear certain things, rather it be the length of their skirts to the size of their collars; however, as women continued to work throughout the nineteen fifties, they began to dress how they felt and dress more comfortable. Some popular fashion trends during the nineteen fifties were poodle skirts for teenagers, slim pencil-line skirts for women, and saddle shoes. Stiletto-heeled shoes also emerged in the early nineteen fifties and there were a variety of different colors so you could get the pair that match your shoes to your outfit. Women such as Audrey Hepburn helped inspire the casual look, and Marilyn Monroe inspired tiny waistlines, full skirts, and busts. On a different note, fashion for men during the nineteen fifties was very quiet and conservative. Men mostly wore plain fabrics in dark, like blue, brown, and grey. People were beginning to feel more freedom in the way that they dressed, their rules were no longer as strict as they had been in the past and they could do what they want; if they wanted to wear a dress that day they could, as well as they could wear a skirt, or even pants.
