Having grown up in a developing country, and having lived in multiple countries as an immigrant and a visible minority, I have seen and experienced varying degrees of inequality first hand. My experiences as an immigrant and visible minority have transformed me into an advocate of social justice and made me keenly aware of the complex issues facing immigrants. These experiences have given me the desire to pursue a legal education, with a career goal of becoming a lawyer specializing in labor and international law. I intend to utilize the knowledge gained in helping new immigrants in my adopted country, Canada, gain a foothold in the Canadian job market.
In the Philippines, the country where I lived the first 23 years of my life,

As an undergraduate, I headed various marketing committees for university events; from quiz bees and film festivals to journalism workshops and literary contests. During my graduate school year, I wrote for the official MBA blog, I mentored future MBA students and I participated in an entrepreneurial competition where my team finished second.
Perhaps my most meaningful extra-curricular activity was my time as a writer and photographer for the University of Santo Tomas paper, The Varsitarian, where I wrote and published several articles and photographs each month during my 2-year stint. I have a skill for taking in vast amounts of information and distilling them, either oral or written, into something comprehensible to most people. As previously mentioned, honoring gifts by contributing to society is a criterion by which I measure success; I was therefore thrilled to contribute to public knowledge with my skill in writing.
Upon graduation from Santo Tomas, I was blessed to have begun a promising career in marketing. As a brand supervisor for CDO Foodsphere Inc., one of the Philippines’ largest consumer goods companies, I handled the brand development and marketing of several brands and was in charge of a $1.2M budget. From the time I took over my brands until I left, each of my brands experienced at least a 25% sales

Education along with work experience are vital resources that immigrants convey to Canada’s industry. However, this is not the scenario for many new immigrants, who struggles to get past the preliminary credentials check-up process. In 2007, a report showed that “foreign credentials of 340,000 Canadians or permanent residents of visible minorities have not been recognized” (Andrew Cardozo and Ravi Pendakur, 2007). In addition, a number of unemployed immigrants within that year accounted for the loss of $4.1B in Canada industry. In context, it shows that immigrants have a higher education than Canadian-born, “Statistics show that 47.5% of immigrants, aged 25 to 34, have completed university, compared to 26.6% of Canadian-born, workers” (Canadian government). This shows the proximity of ignorance and prejudice towards hiring an immigrant in Canada. To connect, these contempt results can give rise to many levels of distress, anxiety and psychological problems that can deteriorate and provoke health problems. A study done by Kate Strully at Harvard University concluded that “people had an increase of 81% chance to develop a mental illness after being unemployed” (KW STRULLY -
Good Evening Everyone! I am McCall Radavich with USA Today. Although I am currently located in New York, I was born and raised in Arizona. At a very young age, I found my passion in writing and photography. I have literally been writing my story for as long as I can remember. When it came time for college, I chose one of the best journalism schools in the United States, the University of Iowa. I started small, taking pictures for the school’s newspaper, The Daily Iowan. I soon worked my way up to being an Opinions Writer, then a Metro Reporter, and finally my senior year, an editor. After graduating with a double major in journalism and geography in 2005, I got a yearlong internship with National Geographic. You know how you look back on moments of your life and think, that’s when it all changed? Well, that was it for me. That was my moment, the year I found myself. Writing isn’t an easy thing. Actually, I would say writing is the hardest thing a person can do, putting your self on display for any and all to see. Writing is the truth, and the truth hurts. I had always thought that was what I did when I wrote, tell the truth, but that wasn’t the case. I hadn’t learned how to write without boundaries until that summer, when I had no other option. I hadn’t known how to write like everything was on the line, because I had never had anything to lose. Now, it’s the only way I write. It is the only way I can. When my year was up, I didn’t know what to do with
social injustice was played out in Topeka with the case of Brown vs. the Topeka
Immigrants today now have the privilege of entering and residing in Canada but along with this privilege, there are also barriers that impede their integration and deprive them of equal opportunity in the society. The undervaluing of foreign education and credentials has emerged over the years as a huge obstacle faced by recent immigrants who seek employment in the areas that they have been trained, and worked in for decades in their respective home countries. For years, newcomers in Canada have been denied inclusion into the Canadian labour market simply because of policies that were
The issues and events examined in these two essays provide a fair and thoughtful discussion of processes that have led to diminished workplace rights among the women and migrant and immigrant workers in Canada. The decisive role in the development of long-term strategies as wage solidarity, the operation
Before starting at my current position at Joyce & Associates, an immigration law firm in Boston, I had long considered a career in law. Growing up, I was engaged by family and school debates about public policy and government. In college, I found my constitutional law courses challenging and exciting. Nonetheless, it wasn’t until I began working with clients like Sandra that I became convinced that a career in law is the right choice for me. Playing my part as a legal assistant in various immigration cases, I have been able to witness how a career in immigration advocacy is both intellectually stimulating and personally fulfilling. I have seen the importance of well-articulated arguments and even creativity in arguing a client’s eligibility

This article provides detailed information that give statistics based on distinguishing immigrant classes: “Tables 2 (for males) and 3 (for females) present descriptive statistics by broad immigrant class across the three cycles of the survey. … For both genders, it is clear that skilled worker principal applicants have higher educational attainment, and it is also apparent that males have higher averages than females”. This article is distinct from the other two articles by the fact that many more statistics are offered. These extra statistics offer more insight into the descriptions of the economical immigrant policies. Moreover, the article offers an insight into a range of policy proposals in determining how immigrants can immigrate into Canada. Though the concept of social injustice is universal in nature, the experience varies with each person. Factors like a person’ race, or gender can further influence the severity of the injustice; victims caught in the overlap between discriminations often go unrecognized by the law and society. Many people recognize the names Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice as African Americans who were murdered by local police. But names like Michelle Cusseaux, Tanish Anderson, and Meagan Hockaday often receive less feedback even though they are also murdered African Americans. The only distinction between the sets of names is gender. Even within racial injustice, discrimination is present between genders as some cases get national
Social justice is a long debated subject that continues to prove controversial and divisive all over the world. Opinions on what constitutes social justice vary on a continuum from more conservative opinions which note individual responsibility to a more liberal stance which promotes a moral responsibility to support social equality (Mapp, 2008). Despite the varying opinions of what establishes social justice, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) serves as the first step in promoting social justice by outlining the basic rights that should be afforded to humanity (United Nations, n.d.). More specifically, Article 22 of the UDHR states that all people should have access to social security protection that works to provide essential needs, provisions for preserving dignity, and freedom to pursue personal interest (United Nations, n.d.). In spite of the established declaration, social justice remains unavailable for too many people. Worldwide, the lack of social protection leads to 1.4 billion people struggling to meet their essential needs due to lack of access to resources which promote a decent standard of living. Another 100 million fall into poverty due to unforeseen complications (GIPSPSI, 2011). Therefore, there is a crucial need to recognize social protection as a human right in order to guarantee equal access to basic services and equal opportunity to all of humankind.
