“Distracted from distraction by distraction.” is a quote from T.S. Elliot that best describes what I see in a world obsessed with social media. Have you ever seen a family or a couple ignoring each other because they’re glued to their electronic devices while eating at a restaurant? How about a concert where a sea of fans direct their cell phones toward the performer rather than taking in the experience? This obsession with technology has wedged itself in between families and genuine interactions. If we do not open our eyes to the damaging effects of this phenomenon, our future generations may go so far down the rabbit hole they may never return. Many people support this view, like Sam Woolfe, who argues, “Depression, addiction, and social interaction are psychologically damaging aspects of Facebook.” Holly B. Shakya agrees by stating that her research results show that, “the use of Facebook was negatively associated with overall well-being.” On the flip side, Nicole B. Ellison believes that there are many benefits of Facebook and social media. I believe social technology is overwhelmingly destructive because it is addictive, causes isolation, and reduces overall well-being. Social media sites, like Facebook, are addictive and causes may people to become reclusive. “Citing evidence from a Harvard University fMRI scan study that shows that self-disclosure of information is essentially rewarding, Sam Woolfe suggests that social media is addictive and causes social isolation.” These fMRI scans are able to show the release of dopamine when individuals share information about themselves. This neurotransmitter, also labeled the “pleasure chemical”, has a primary role in addiction and is associated with sexual gratification, coffee, nicotine, and gambling. Like any addiction, it can lead to social isolation and depression because it can detract from face-to-face interactions. Authentic social interactions are necessary to develop and maintain social skills like conversation, recognizing tone of voice, and body language. Our species is social and cyber-interactions are not a substitute for authentic interactions. The concern becomes what about the children exposed to these faux interactions before fully developing
Kardaras, Nicolas. "Generation Z: Online and at Risk?." Scientific American Mind, vol. 27, no. 5, Sep/Oct 2016, pp. 64-9. MasterFILE Premier. Kardars discuss generation z use of social media affecting them negatively. He opens his article with a story of Heidi who becomes addicted to social media when her school issues her a Chromebook. Before Heidi is issued the laptop, she was a sweet innocent girl and after having it for a semester she became someone her parents could not recognize. He states that social media is a “perfect storm” for humans because having a social connection key to “happiness and health”. Having the ability to always use social media leads to hyper texting the illusion of a real connection making it hard for teens to have face to face conversations, making a teens become “glow kid[s]“, someone who is raised on mostly digital social interactions. Facebook depression” can result in the teen to have lower grades and behavior problems in teens. He concludes his article with facts proving that Facebook can become addictive in some people. This source helps support my thesis that Facebook affects teens mental health.
In The Shallows, Nicholas Carr discusses the distraction of the internet and other technologies connected to the internet. When Carr published The Shallows, social media was not incredibly common or popular and Carr did not deeply discuss the idea that social media is or can be distracting and damaging. Since The Shallows was published social media has become increasingly available, used, and prevalent in most people’s daily lives. Because of social media’s current popularity, I wanted to look into social media’s impact on our lives. I will be exploring if social media is distracting and damaging to us.
As social media can have a major impact in our lives when it comes to communication, it can also bring many negative effects to several young adults and adolescences such as depression; depression often develops around young adulthood. Although, there are many factors that lead up to depression, there is a growing interest in the potential influence of social media use on physiological well-being (Lin, Liu, 2016 ) Social Media is forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, private messages, pictures, videos, and other content (Merriam-Webster dictionary). Social networks sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram has attracted millions of users world-wide and are simply applied to an individual’s daily life routine
While there are many benefits to social media, there are hidden dangers as well, especially to mental health. An increasing number of studies have found that Facebook increases the risk of low self-esteem and depression because it gives a distorted
Social media is the reason for many of the world’s problems and solutions. Technology is taking over teens lives. Teens are so addicted to their smartphones. You could be outside on a walk and you look around and so many people are on their phones. When people are on walks they should be socializing with whoever they are with or they should be enjoying nature and should not be looking down at their phones. We believe that people should turn off their phones and socialize with others. People can get really bad depression and anxiety from being their phones to much. The most common thing that can happen with phones is distracted driving and getting in crashes. Being distracted by your phone can lead to death. They now have apps where you can
"On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection," says Kross. "But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result - it undermines it."
the time of terrorist attacks. They inform people of the location of the attack, and of any safe locations people can evacuate to if needed. In areas high in earthquake activity such as Indonesia, social media is used to warn people of potential upcoming earthquakes. If an earthquake ends up striking an area, news of it is quickly posted on social media, and groups are quickly assembled to carry natural disaster cleanup. On a much lighter note, Vancouver uses social media to inform people when garbage pick-ups will take place (Guo). The world is slowly learning to use social media more and more as a public service information delivery system, whether it be for a surprising disastrous situation, or news for everyday life.

Topic 2: How do you think Social Media are shaping demand for Events and the Event Experience? Use examples to illustrate your argument.
I live in a generation that grew up using technology and using social media. We have the opportunity to be connected to the world online at our fingertips at all times of everyday. Most of us are online in some way and are always connected. As time goes on I see us getting more addicted and dependant on our cell phones. From a sociological perspective, these phones are basically our way to the universe. Each individual that uses it is connected to hundred of millions of other individuals and together we make up the online social world. I chose to give up all social media. This includes instagram, twitter, tumblr, facebook, and snapchat. Social media is meant to connect us together but instead it disconnects us by having addicting features,
People are constantly on their phones whether they are walking down the street, eating dinner, and sometimes even while using the restroom. Social media has changed the way people think and do things. Social media has a major effect on people in this society. Social media can vary from defining who someone is to being someone’s career. Social media has changed the way people see the world and has made it easier for people to have their own opinions and personalities. There are two arguments to this topic, whether social media is beneficial or not. On one hand, social media is beneficial because it gives people an opportunity to express themselves easier, it allows people to communicate, and people can get informed from it. On the other hand, social media may lead to cyber bullying, misunderstandings, and loss of privacy. People have debated whether social media is good or bad and many people see it as something that is negative. When people talk about social media, the first things people think about are that it wastes time, starts conflicts, and loss of privacy. Despite this, social media has influenced people in many positive ways. People learn more from social media and can easily express themselves. Social media allows people to have a voice and stand up for themselves when they are too afraid to in person. Social Media has positively influenced people in this society because it allows people to express themselves, to communicate, and to further educate and inform.
Social Media has taken over our lives over the period that it has evolved. Various people are being affected by these addicting websites because they can’t stop using it. Social Media are websites in which people create their own profiles and participate in social networking. For example, Instagram, snapchat, twitter, Facebook, etc. these are all the things today we use to entertain ourselves, but it’s become a problem. Back in the day all we had was myspace and aim as an entertainment, today we have all types of websites for all diverse types of people and what they would like. People today have a challenging time focusing on the people around them because of their phones. It’s very interesting because kids today know how to use YouTube
In fact very few of us can live without using gifts of technology. Social media like Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are few examples of modern technology and are used by billions of people around the globe. Today social networking sites playing important role in our life. However the use, may be excessive use, of Facebook might be harmful to us to some extent. A study conducted by University of Michigan researchers claimed that “Facebook causes depression”(Kross 2). Facebook use predicts declines in subjective well-being instead of enhancing it. It is generally believed that socialization is good for psychological health. In fact this is true subject to some pre-set criteria. But socialization through Facebook is harmful. The study is the first published research that examined influence of Facebook on young adults. The focus was how happy they are and how satisfied with their lives over time. They researchers claimed that the more people used Facebook during one time period, the worse they subsequently felt. On the surface, Facebook provides communication tools for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. But instead of enhancing human well-being these findings suggest that Facebook undermine it.
Online forms of communications, like social media, have undoubtedly provided convenient methods to communicate with anyone at any moment. Adolescents have been reported to spend on average six hours consuming media (Wallace). The point when an unhealthy amount of time is spent on social media is when negative social risks can begin to present themselves—children and adolescents, who are experience significant brain growth and development, are the most at risk for social damage. Heidi, a thirteen-year-old girl previously described as a happy, sweet, and loving girl, screams “I’m going to kill you while you are both asleep” as she flails and kicks her father before biting his arm. This was Heidi’s second violent rage in a week because her parents took away her access to social media; this would also be the second time that she would be taken to a psychiatric emergency room (Kardaras). Heidi is one adolescent who has crossed the line of healthy social media usage and now has moved towards risks likes anxiety and depression, social media dependency, and inadequate social skills.
The write Gary Hayden has concluded that using Facebook is depressing and has added stress to people’s life thus does not impact people in a positive manner. Hayden has used the results of a study done by the University of Michigan on 82 participants that were assessed over two weeks to support his conclusion. He has also included that the results of the study is clear and participants are found that their life satisfaction levels have shown to decrease over the amount of times that they logged into Facebook.
