The Internet has come a long way within the past 10 years. It once was used mostly as a form of mass communication with very limited forms of interpersonal communication. Since the birth of social media, the internet has now become the most important way (if not the only way) to keep in touch with a lot of people at the same time. Most of humanity considers Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and e-mail as the best way to exchange daily information with family, friends, colleagues, and even their most favorite movie actor. Human relations has been changed the most since the existence of Social Networking. Social networking's purpose is to promote and aid in worldwide communication. In most social networking programs, users are required to create a profile with their personal information. This enables them to communicate through all kinds of texts or media messages. Most social networking sites like Facebook allow users to create pages that represent them in some way. They post pictures of themselves and their friends. Their friends comment on these photos. I find that with my own Facebook page, for example, does just that in a way. The majority of my posts consist of my family. I post photos of my children in different activities mostly to provide an update of my life to family members that live far away. I also enjoy sharing funny videos and articles for the enjoyment of my followers. The main purpose of a social networking site like Facebook is to help

People do not realize the immense impact social media has on their lives. Social media first impacted people’s lives with the invention of the telephone in 1890. Following this, the radio entered many homes in 1891; this was the beginning of social media. During the twentieth century, computers and the Internet began the modern rise of today’s social media. UseNet, in 1979 was a virtual newsletter, which began what people think today of as modern social media. When home computers became popular during the 1980s, such sites as relay chats took off. Then, in 1997, the first true social media site , Six Degrees, came about: “It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today” ( “Complete History of Social Media: Than and Now”). Although social media has some positive effects, social media has changed the world for the worse because it negatively affects politics, privacy, and bullying.
The internet has changed the world as we knew it. The world no longer communicates, does business, or perches commodities in the same a traditional way. E-mail, instant massager and chat rooms were the first innovations to be used by the public. As time went on more and more people depended on the internet to communicate with each other. It did not take long for the U.S. Postal service to see the decline in mailed letters. With the internet being so easy to access and email being so easy to use it quickly became the preferred way to communicate with family and friends over long distances. Companies soon followed suit to better serve their clients.
The introduction and the spread of the Internet have revolutionized the way individuals communicate and interact with each other. According to Van and Thomas, propagation of this medium of interaction or communication makes it unimaginable to remember that only a few decades back when people had to wait for days, weeks or even months to receive letters from their friends, relatives, or various agencies (3). Today, the internet has made communication quick and cost-effective for most of the people. The latest innovation or by-product from the web is social media. There are various social media platforms, which individuals find new friends, keep
Nowadays it is not uncommon that almost everyone has at least one profile on some sort of social networking site. The reason? To not feel left out. We post online to share what we are doing and how we are feeling. However, social media has influenced us in ways that were not initially planned. Our identities, the concept of what makes you, yourself. Identities are constantly evolving due to social media. We are posting online to make good impressions on the people who follow us. We snap photos and add filters to make ourselves look and feel better. Maybe someone will comment! What if nobody does? Do I delete it? These are constant questions and concerns that go through peoples’ minds during the time they post content. I know those questions run through my head each time I click the share button. It’s almost like we need validation from others for us to be ourselves. When I post, I wait to see the reaction of others, will they like it? When others post, I am constantly comparing myself to them. We are constantly comparing and evolving. Exactly like our identity. Our lives are increasingly more public now more than ever.
When I was 16 years old, I spent a summer at a Christian camp as a server. Although I was excited at first, I was nervous because while at the camp, you were not allowed to have your phone. The first couple days were hard, I struggled with the idea that I couldn’t talk to my friends all the time, but by the time the camp was over, I lost my desire to use my phone. Even after I left the camp, I began to use my phone less and less. I was able to put my phone down for hours at a time without having the desire or need to check on it. It wasn’t until college that I started to be on my phone all the time again. The fact that I was once again away from my friends and family created a constant desire to be on my phone to keep tabs on them. When I joined a sorority freshman year, all of our announcements and information about events were posted on facebook which made me redownload facebook and become addicted like I was in middle school. I am constantly checking all forms of social media several times a day because in my mind I am “in the know” and have a firm grasp of what is going on with my life. On Tuesday, November 14th I decided to download the app and have it track my media use for a few days before I did the social media fast. I found that I was on my phone for about 4 hours a day and had about 115 pickups. I wish I could say I was shocked, but because I am constantly checking facebook for sorority updates and talking to my friends via text and snapchat, I am not surprised

The World Wide Web has ushered in a new age of possibilities for society. Many functions and services that occurred in the real world can now be done in the online world, often faster, easier, and more conveniently than in the real world. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, and Flicker was invented to keep us in touch and keep us closer to our family and friends. Social media is a medium in which people post about whatever they deem necessary. According to Sherry Turkle’s book Alone Together, a vast majority of teens also use it to create a name for themselves and to pretend to be someone else; someone they want to be. However, in analyzing my social media, it was very difficult to find any trace of what kind of character I was attempting to portray. One similarity that I can see between Turkle’s analysis of social media and my personal account is that my account does portray a type of person that I aspire to be. Online, I am in some unconscious way making a name for myself, but the problem arises when there are no differences between my social media self and my real self. Online I portray myself as a chill, relaxed person and my Facebook reflects that very well. I am not here to impress anybody and I do not share anything for any other reason besides the fact that I enjoyed that thing. I post when I feel I need to yet looking deeper into my likes and shares there are some small, significant patterns between what I like and how it affects my image.
