Social identities have a lot of significance on people’s lives today. People have adopted these norms of behaviors, the values and beliefs which come along with social identities. Various groups within the society have different expectations and standards of behavior which are now seen as a completely natural thing rather than just beliefs. There are different norms of social identities which include the race/ethnicity, religion, class, gender and sexuality. This paper will focus more on the class and gender social identities.
In my culture, the main two social identities which are considered the most are gender and class. They highly contribute on how different categories of people are perceived in the society and this determines the how people relate in the society. Looking at gender, people believe that the difference in gender is connected to different responsibilities. The way ladies are treated is different from the way men are treated in the society. This is according to what people strongly believe about gender difference and as a result, different people are valued differently in different situations. Not only that, there are also different expectations from each gender. Looking at the responsibilities aspect, there are jobs which are considered to be suitable for men while others are seen to be suitable for women. This is not because the women cannot do the jobs which are perceived to be suitable for men, bit it is simply because these jobs are perceived to be manly. Society has a way of making assumptions based on one’s physical characteristics. Often at times we categorize individuals to a particular social group. In regard to society’ perception of an individual this however, contributes to the development of social construction of racism. Most people want to be identified as individuals rather than a member of specific social group. As a result, our social identity contains different categories or components that were influenced or imposed. For example, I identify as a, Jamaican, Puerto Rican and a person of color. There is social roles and then there is social issues. From a very young age, as soon as a child reaches the capacity to understand, they are taught that they are ‘male’ or ‘female’ and that one should follow the social norm (role) that society has placed out for them. A male can only be strong, profound, masculine, stern, and emotionally controlled. While a women should only be nurturing, gentle, and sensitive. This is all before we even reach puberty, which largely created a (social) issue over the course of our generation. Men were the only people for many years to have jobs to maintain the family. I believe because women were so late in gaining equal rights they, till this day they are underpaid. It is unfair that both sexes can have the same qualifications and job and yet women still fall short in salary pay. Even when it comes to promotions bosses tend to choose men because it gives their company a better imagine, a more “manly” image. A man in front of a company is said to show more strength and business knowledge rather than a women. People tend to be somewhat skeptical of what a women is capable of handling in their jobs as well as in a everyday life situation. Women aren’t as involved in meetings are given any challenging tasks because women are seen as incapable to handle it. During the hiring process there tends an abundance of discrimination. Women are typically chosen for women-based jobs like cleaning or nursing. Men are typically chosen for manly jobs like business and construction. Women able to to the same jobs so it’s not like they don’t try, they just aren’t very likely in getting the job. When it comes to the hiring process sexism tends to be programmed into people 's brains.

Men get paid more than females do. Men get promotions more than females do. In the work place women get sexual harassed by their employee. Women who had less education also received less pay. Females have a harder time on trying a CEO position and are challenged when they do earn the position by the male workers. If a male who has graduated college work he will make over 91,000 dollars but if a women who has graduated college works in the same position she would make around 60,000 dollars. The fact of the matter is that gender roles, although not as prominent as they once were, still have a heavy impact on how society’s functions are dispersed and divided up. There is no denying that a double standard and gender roles were once how everything was decided, but what some deny is that there is not a way to overcome them. Secondly, the research question was examined under what circumstances is the social class of identity exploration and does the exploration differ by people of difference social class upbringing? Thirdly, it was examined whether there is a relationship between the social class background and the motivated to the future career. Last, it was examined the philosophy or views that the participants learn to recognize the social class toward the identity when they came from different social class backgrounds. In this study, the hypotheses were suggested that if the social class is playing an important role, then the independent variable such as the ideologies, viewpoints, choices, self-perspectives, etc. will form the development of identity as well as identity exploration.

I examined different professional industries in The United States to get a familiar understanding of gender inequality around me. Gender inequality does not particularly favor one sex in every professional industry. Joanne Lipman’s article, "Let’s Expose the Gender Pay Gap," dealt with professional women in the work force and the gender pay gap that exists between professional men. There is also a distinct gender gap between a woman and a man asking for a raise or promotion within a company. “Female doctors and surgeons, for example, earn 71 percent of what their male colleagues make, while female financial specialists are paid just 66 percent as much as comparable men. Other researchers have calculated that women one year out of college earn 6.6 percent less than men after controlling for occupation and hours, and that female M.B.A. graduates earn on average $4,600 less than their male classmates for their first jobs.” (Lipman). There is a statistical gender pay gap in The United States that is undeniable.
Gender equality in salary is always unfair. Men employees always receive higher wages than women employees had received. Companies would like to hire men employees compared to women employees because they believed women employees are weak and cannot competent in the workplace although they have abilities and skills.
