The social work profession as I understand essentially concerns the desire to help those in need of resources, services, and counsel. I consider the social work profession to be a passion-driven and providing career. I understand social work to be a profession providing helpful resources to those who seek assistance from others in various aspects, along with those who do not but can benefit. As a child of divorce and verbal abuse who did not have access to any kind of counsel existing outside of those involved, my passion to help children suffering through these common components of life exceed my passion for anything else in the world. To be able to work in this field of social work would be the most exhilarating accomplishment of my life.
Throughout my sociology and child and family studies coursework at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette I was constantly enlightened of ways I could successfully accomplish my ultimate goal to have a career that would allow me to help others. By acquiring an undergraduate degree in sociology, I realized I would be able to achieve impacting all aspects I am passionate about by furthering my education and pursuing a master’s degree in social work.
I have recently started working as a case manager for a disaster response team which has allowed me to work with people of diversified backgrounds with varied problems and household situations. When I go to a client’s home to be the helping hand they’ve reached out to, they become family and they become a friend. Though my job is strictly to assist those with disaster related needs, with disaster comes misfortune in many different aspects of life. The purpose of social work in the contemporary society is concern for the individual. The function of social work is to help solve problems in human relationships for a better quality of life and to protect them from harm and from harming others which will enhance well-being. I have decided to pursue social work as a profession because I am at the point in my life where I want a sense of fulfilment. I care about people, I want to help others. I want to make the world a better place to live. I want to be the change I want to see. I want to serve the people in society who are physical, mentally, and socially less privileged than I am and make them feel loved and accepted. I will work with all groups of people but I have a strong interest in working with children and people who suffer from mental illnesses and addiction. I am interested in social work because it is a career with lots of flexibility in an ever-changing field allowing me to work in different settings, with different goals and challenges, but with a shared purpose of serving the common good of people.
Before I knew exactly what the social work profession consisted of, I knew I wanted a career that focused on helping others. I explored options including medical and nursing fields, but they did not fit what I was destined for. It was not until I began working in a mental health office for a Licensed Independent Social Worker and a Prescribing Psychologist, that I knew the social work field was for me. I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
Harris, I strongly consider choosing social work as my professional career. Dr. Harris finished our interview saying that “A great social worker and counselor is a person who is completely committed to the clients they are serving. They understand that to become the best in their profession, they must be engaged in continued growth professionally and personally.” He challenged future social workers and myself with helpful advice. He encouraged me to finish school with a Bachelors in Social work, enroll in a master’s degree program in social work, seek internship opportunities and gain my license to become a Professional Licensed Social Worker. Despite of the problems and help needed in our community, research indicates the shortage of African American Social Workers. I want make a difference, advocates for social justice and change. I can see myself having social working as a career for the rest of my life because I like helping people face problems that they can’t face on their own. I love working with children, families, and being able to experience working with others and helping them face obstacles that their facing in their life. One of many reasons I would also enjoy social working as a career would be helping these people overcome obstacles they thought they’d never overcome. While growing up and facing tough situations in life, I always had family and friends there for me which is why I would love to help others and be there for them because it’s a great feeling knowing that you have people there wanting to listen to you and help you through problems.
Within the past twenty-five years, my life experiences have led me to become passionate about social work. Although my journey in social work hasn 't been something I’ve always known I wanted to do when I was young, a combination of personal, professional, and academic experiences has pointed me into the direction where I am today. As the oldest out of four siblings, my family has always worked hard to get where they’re at now. Knowledge of my parent 's personal; as well as, their professional struggle of not having a college degree has led them to work hard for everything they 've received in their life. On many levels, I secretly desire to be this professional social worker that has experienced many different realms of social work practice. As I maneuver through my first couple days of field, many questions run through my mind as to what’s to be expected of a master’s level social work. When I first entered the field of social work at Southwest Mississippi Community College, I was clueless as to what the social work profession entailed. At Southwest MS Community College, we mostly focused on perquisites and a few classes related to family. After, leaving Southwest MS Community College and entering Jackson State University, I realized my previous college did not teach me anything relating to the field of social work. However, my entry in my first class Ethics and Values at Jackson State University taught me about the six core values in social work, such as service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence. Upon, my entry into JSU, Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) program, I understood that social work was not about assisting only children. There is masses of people who need, social workers to advocate for better housing, food, medical care and other basic necessities to survive everyday life.
For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest to work in a field of helping others. At first my focus was on youths and how I can help those individuals in need, but then I became more interested in working with elders who can not properly care for themselves. I also became interested in working with families that are going through a difficult time in life such as a divorce or a bad living environment. I am applying for a place to study social work because I have always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I gained some insight into mental health while caring for my mom, who has been struggling with serious physical and mental health issues such as an eating disorder, depression and anxiety since I was young. I witnessed my mother in an endless cycle of binging and purging food due to a strong hate for her body, which eventually lead to depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
