Alivia Lohmeier “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt.” This quote is a lie because words have the power to build someone up or bring someone to tears. This is why lyrics are one of the most important parts of songwriting. The lyrics give the song meaning. Some songs, however, have more meaning than others do, and the value of their lyrics varies based on the listener. “Hotel Ceiling” by Rixton is meaningful song because the song shows personal hardships of getting the news that a loved one has died, something no one should ever have to go through. In “Hotel Ceiling,” the singer sees on the news that his friend or girlfriend, one of the most important people in his life, had been killed. For example, in the first part of the song, he says “on the TV they said they had reported you dead.” This leads into the rest of the song as how he decides to cope with the loss. This method of coping however, may not be the greatest. For, in the start of the chorus, he says, “I’ve been staring at the hotel ceiling drinking everything I’ve found this evening.” This quote talks about drinking, a method many use when coping with a loss, which is why this song has such …show more content…

Before the chorus, he says, “Only time tells me more than I hoped, all that I know is I’ll be fine in a fortnight, lo and behold, I knew I shouldn’t have let you go.” This shows that after a while, when the shock subsides and everything is sorted out, he can start the process of moving on and getting better. The hurt never completely goes away, however, for at the end of the chorus Rixton sings, “so I’ll never let you go, don’t you leave me lonely.” This quote says that he’s never going to let go of the loved one that he’s lost, and he’ll always remember them, and that there’s that lingering sense of loneliness since he no longer has that
