Since its’ inception, the Southern Baptist Convention has stood in unity against the consumption of alcohol for recreational and social purposes. However, there has been a growing group of Southern Baptists that are challenging this historically held position. Richard Land and Duke Barrett write a defense of Southern Baptists historical position on abstinence from alcohol. In assessing the possible factors for the emergence of the “vocal minority’s” stance on alcohol within the SBC, Land and Barrett give a strong critic. They acknowledge their personal disappointment in those who are insisting on their right to drink alcohol. The reason for disappointment lacks solid grounds. It could be very possible that those who do not believe in total
From the Project Director’s experience, it is common to hear and feel a sense of gratitude and positive pride that Lenexa Baptist Church (LBC) is an excellent church from both leaders and the small group setting participants. Any faults found are minor and pale in comparison to many of the issues a church could face. LBC is a regional church with multiple campus locations strategically selected for maximum impact to reach Kansas City with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Have you ever remembered the time people against the consumption of alcoholic beverages? It was the temperance movement which began in the early 19th century in order to reduce drunkenness. Nevertheless, the temperance movement promoted government to make the prohibition in the society. Citizens were not allowed to drink the alcohol and banned the alcoholic affected America to maintain their social harmony. Moreover, citizens especially the drinkers’ children developed more slowly and they were more liable to the accident so that the temperance movement can easily educate the alcoholics. For these reasons, the temperance movement should be justified as the most influential event in the U.S. History.
One major movement in the 19th century that grew from the Second Great Awakening was the Temperance Movement, a movement that would later lead to the 18th amendment which prohibited the sale and brewing of alcohol and ushered in the Prohibition Era. According to Lyman Beecher, in his sermon “A Reformation of Morals Practicable and Indispensable,” the excessive drinking of alcohol “will produce neither bodies nor minds like those which were the offspring of temperance and virtue.” This statement regarding temperance is just a small part of his larger viewpoint in the sermon, which focused on how we as Americans need to return to a more faithful society(Doc 1)(POV). This message would echo through the United States and turn many people against alcohol. In John Warner Barber’s “The Drunkard’s Progress, or the direct road to poverty, wretchedness & ruin,” Barber is depicting to families of possible drunkards the downward spiral of alcohol addiction that is most likely occurring in their households. Barber uses bible
I knew one thing for certain: Tennessee was a very stupid state filled with stupid people and I would never drink their stupid sweet tea. Thus was my twelve year old opinion.
Existing in this book are fifteen essays, all written by Flynt, and all are relative to the South, religion, and diversity. His essays review southern history, politics, southern regionalism, evangelicalism, traditionalism, fundamentalism, social history, labor history, two case studies; one on the Southern Baptists in Appalachia and of modernization and community; the second one of twentieth-century politics and religion in Florida. Asserts the complexity of social issues and the reforms Baptists felt were necessary to change. He expounds a minister’s battle within a church to not display the American flag because of the death involved behind it and to not be willing for his church life to be separated from his personal convictions. The main reason that I am sold on this Baptist thing is because our statement of beliefs is not a creed or confession that tries to express all of the things that southern Baptist believe but is instead broad statement that hits the main points. This is important to me because unlike some other mainline denominations Baptists do not base the whole organization around a certain theological system. Because of this the Southern Baptists allow for a minister to change his view as he grows, reads, and learns without having to leave the denomination.
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) founded in 1845 at Augusta, Georgia, is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The name itself tells us the geographical location of where the most number of these churches were founded. Although primarily found in the southern region of the United States, in recent years they have expanded to all regions of the country. “Due to its expansion their annual convention has been held in cities outside of the southern area, therefore giving the name “Southern” a large misconception” (Mead, Hill, & Atwood, 2001, p. 64)
Palmetto Health Baptist service more beginning mothers and their babies than any hospital in the Midlands. Palmetto offers loving and compassionate care to their patients to provide them with educational, spiritual, and emotional needs. Also, Palmetto Health Baptist developed a family like atmosphere so that each family member feels important, while waiting for their new addition to the family. The birthplace includes: labor, delivery, surgical area, and both a high risk and recovery unit. I was lucky to get a quick appointment through a classmate I had last semester in my class, who currently is employed there. My interview was set for April 22, 2016. Mrs. Jones and I met up and I was able to follow her to the facility two hours before her scheduled shift. Palmetto Health Baptist is a big staff working hospital. This hospital is great to work for and not just for pediatric nurses but also for other health science majors. Palmetto Hospital has the greatest dedicated staff, making sure your questions are answered and your concerns are worriless.
The absence of alcohol left a void in different aspects of civilized life. For some this was a past time activity that filled free time. For others this was considered a necessity of life that required constant attention. Prohibition laws were meant to apply social pressure that carried out a smaller groups agenda on a larger groups. The reaction was a mere causality of reciprocation for the limitation. So the plunge into depravity became acceptance of certain selfish actions that benefited the desire.
The Holy Bible authorities people to be evangelists for Jesus Christ, and they will impart their beliefs on others, therefore knowing the doctrine of Jesus Christ is important.
Moreover, The Temperance Campaign which was presented in a speech by Willard in 1874, titled “Everybody’s War,” outlined the dangers of alcoholism and its immediate effects on American families. This speech gave the controversial views of the modern evangelical Christian, middle class women and their belief that sobriety and patriotism went hand and hand. Sobriety was represented as a way to strengthen American families by living morally and by the hands of God. This speech in particular, made a clear separation between Christianity and the consumption and selling
The Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) were an African American civil rights organization who joined forces in 1963 to build a campaign that would attack the city of Birmingham’s segregation system. For years, Birmingham, Alabama was considered the South’s toughest, most segregated and racist city in the south. A city where the governor of Alabama, George Wallace, and the chief of police, Eugene Connor, were both well-known racists who offered the KKK support through the Birmingham Police Department. Even though there was a great amount of barriers in this campaign, King and Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth led the campaign to accomplish its goal by placing pressure on Birmingham’s
Atlanta Bethal Community Church(C) Monday, March 7 was touched by the serving heart of a recent Church Attendee. Larry Tharpe, middle age African American male, expressed a serving heart by asking Minster Anderson if he could help with any church works, including evangelism.
Case Study 1: Bob is a very intelligent, 25-year-old member of a religious organization based on Buddhism. Bob’s working for this organization has caused considerable conflict between him and his parents, who are devout Baptists. Recently, Bob has experienced acute spells of nausea and fatigue that have prevented him from working and have forced him to return home to live with his parents. Various medical tests are being conducted, but as yet, no physical causes for his problems have been found. Bob was raised as a devout Baptists but his work involved him with a completely different religion which can cause conflicts.
My entire worship experience has been based off trying to understand more about the Baptist religion and what its purpose is in Christianity. The Baptist religion has always intrigued me as my uncle is a Baptist pastor; I’ve always wondered why he chose this religion. During family reunions, we would have my uncle lead prayer and I would question why his prayer was different to way I pray as a Catholic. My hope with the answers that I got from my interviews, is that I will be able to compare and contrast between the Catholic and Baptist religion.
