Sowbugs, although referred to as a “bug” in its name is in fact not an insect, but rather an isopod (cite). Although the misconception of Sowbugs being insects is very common, individuals need to be reminded that insects have only three pairs of legs whereas sowbugs have seven. Like many invertebrates, Sowbugs are ectothermic which causes their body temperature to change with their environment (cite). Sowbugs can be described as having seven pairs of legs and having a 14 mm long dark brown body that is covered with overlapping plates which can be compared to that of an armadillo’s; the exoskeleton of the isopod must molt as it matures (cite).
