Good manners means ‘’ a person's outward bearing or way of behaving towards others’’ Manners are something used every day to make a good impression on others and to feel good about oneself. No matter where you are - at home, work, or with friends - practicing good manners is important. Good manners are more than opening doors and writing thank you notes. While opening doors for others and writing notes is nice, true courtesy goes deeper. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling. If you practice good manners, you are showing those around you that you are considerate of their feelings and respectful. You are also setting standards for others' behavior and encouraging them to treat you with similar respect. Every culture and individual may have different rules or feelings about what is polite or is not polite. The goal of this course is to review some of the more basic and common rules of polite behavior in our society. These rules may differ from person to person or based on situation, but there is one rule of good manners (and life, in general) that is always easy to follow - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Physically, it is crucial to not tower over the child when communicating with them but instead go down to the child level but any means such as sitting or kneeling. This is important so that the child will feel more comfortable and doesn’t feel intimidated. Verbally, it is really important for parents to use age-appropriate language that the child can easily understand especially with younger children.
Encourage correct manners to be used by ‘treating others in a way that you expect to be treated’. Always allow the children to hear “please” and “thank you” being used which will show continued respect between all children and other adults.

There are many purposes of politeness including: creating a public self image, creating solidarity, threatening people to send a negative message, not threatening people or upsetting them, indicating social relationship, showing awareness of social context, and power dynamics. When talking to children it is good practice to kneel to their level as to meet their eye level. Also the way we hold our frames gives of signals.
