What is a coach? Webster dictionary says a person who teaches and trains athletes, a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays games. What makes a good coach? Is it wins? Bobby Knight has 902 wins and many question his coaching tactics. Becker*The all-time leader in NCAA basketball wins is Harry Statam of McKendree, he has 1,088 wins but no national championships. Mike Kryyzewski has 1,018 win and 5 national championships. So what makes one coach better than another? How and what criteria can we use to measure? Can a coach with a losing record still be a good coach? Are all coaching with winning records good coaches?
The National Standards for Sport Coaches, much like the national standards for teachers are a guide to all in sport leaders and should be followed. The standards allow for each coach to individualize what they can do, but it supplies 8 domains and 40 standards that they must take into consideration when they develop a program or even volunteer for a community team. &&Children who take part …I would think that every sports organization should hand a copy of these standards to everyone who comes in contact with athletes. If nothing else, it would give them an idea as to the magnitude of their commitment.

They are unaware of the physical and emotional damage they can spread through their team by their lack of coaching education. We applaud their willingness to volunteer but should we be concerned. It is not always the coach’s fault. These volunteers are not trained in the basic skills that could make them successful. Even basic first aid and physical train are not
Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. Those blocks are; leadership, organization, attitude, respect, and resiliency. Each of these five aspects are equally important and balance each other out. Leadership, the action of leading a group of athletes towards a goal. Organization, being able to organize a team and have a plan in order to help the team achieve goals. Attitude, it is very important for a coach to have a winning and positive attitude that is contagious to the players. Respect, there has to be a good
Describe P1 and Explain M1 four roles and four responsibilities of sports coaches, using examples of coaches from different sports.
The relationship between an athlete and a coach is an unique and (humble??) one. It’s all about learning, growing, and overcoming failures to its successes. About looking forward to the future together in the game and beyond the life of sports. The interaction between them should be upheld and agreed upon, to be held together. They are the most influential character of the competitive environment. I believe in the value of a coach.
Required classes to ensure that coaches know what to do are: Selected principles of biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, psychology, and sociology related to coaching; human growth and development; safety; first aid and care of injuries; and training and conditioning of athletes. All coaches must be current in first aid prior to the first day of practice for the assigned sport. According to the Commissioner of Education in New York State University as stated in an interview through e-mail, “First-aid can be completed through various options like American Red Cross responding to emergencies; a state education department-approved course on health sciences applied to coaching; a state education department-approved college or university on athletics training or sport medicine; a state education department-approved in-service first aid course; a state education department-approved college first aid course; or equivalent experience attending clinics, workshops, courses or specific programs approved by the Commissioner of Education in that coach’s state.” Knowing the issues that come with safety and prevention is the most important. Every coach needs to take into consideration the fact that anything can happen, and with a proper training and courses taken can help in quick reaction to any incident occurring. Knowing the health related aspects of athletics is something every coach has to have.
Overall, I would say that my career goal of becoming a high school athletic director has not changed. I very much enjoyed the tasks and environment of working in an athletic department. The only downside that I observed were the long hours due to having to be present both at all home athletic events, and in the athletic office during the school day. Other than that one downside, I think that I would really enjoy being a high school athletic director. This job would allow me to fulfill my desires of changing the lives of young athletes and promoting the importance of education.
Our group wanted to be various kinds of coaches. Two of us want to be football coaches and one of us wants to be a gymnastics coach. However, in the end we decided to go with football since majority won, and then with the college setting.
When you’re watching a sports game do you ever wonder why the coaches are mostly white? Leagues like the NFL and NBA are trying to get their teams to hire coaches from minority groups, but some people say that race should not interfere with the process of hiring a coach. Sports teams should make an effort to hire their coaching and higher office positions from minority groups because it is mainly white male coaches, most of the players in the sports come from minority groups, and it would also prove that racial sports barriers don’t exist.
The draft has a significant impact on the coaches as much as the players. Coaches for the NBA, NFL, and MLB have to be sure their potential players are skilled enough, fit into their team program, and will make a difference in the team program. Also, they have to evaluate the players they already have so when picking for the draft, coaches won’t pick the same type of player they already have on the rosters. Coaches tend to look at the areas they struggled in the previous season or seasons
Coaches come from many different backgrounds. Some are former players, some are students of the game, and some just want to learn a new skill. Growing up, I have had good coaches, mediocre coaches, and bad coaches. Although our team record, or my personal seasons haven’t always been up to my expectations, each of these coaches have taught me different ways to coach the game. My sport of choice is baseball. I have played for 14 years, and although an arm injury has probably ended my playing days, my love and passion for the sport is still there. When I think of “Why do I want to coach?” I think of three main reasons that attract my interest. These include, I love seeing people reach new heights through hard work, I feel I have a strong yet unorthodox
High school coaches must be the gatekeepers! Coaches, whether you like it or not, your words, actions, and tolerance for bad sportsmanship will be the key as to whether your athletes and your school are viewed as classy competitors, or an epicenter for sportsmanship implosion. High school athletics are the last bastion of clean, uninfected competition, and we must keep it this way. Below are some coaching recommendations on how to send the right message and keep your team classy and
Coaches should have sport specific skills as they need to understand certain technical aspects of the sport they are trying to teach. A coach needs to ensure that they have a good knowledge and understanding of their own sport and how the latest information in sport science can aid to develop performers, this is important so coaches can deliver demonstrations correctly and carry out good practice as if they were to demonstrate something wrongly then students could pick up bad habits by simply imitating and doing as their instructed. However if a coach is less knowledgeable in a particular area of sport they could use their transferable skills .
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
My topic is similar to yours. I have always been intrigued to examine the relationship between coach and athlete. In my experience, I have found coaches who provide positive support and are constructive with their criticism are more enjoyable to play for and give the athlete a more positive experience. Coaches that come across as condescending seem to push kids away from the game. It is important that the student-athlete has a positive experience, especially student-athletes at a young age. I feel if a student-athlete has a negative experience at the interscholastic level he or she will be less likely to stick with the sport.
Of course I had dreams of playing professional sport like every other young male in the world but, a wise man spoke to me and he asked me how much my favorite basketball player makes on average, I did the research and Lebron James makes over 300 million dollars annually. Younger me got that information and as expected I held strong on my dreams of being a professional athlete until he showed me 0.0015% of Americans make it into the NBA.”Out of every 10,000 kids playing basketball in high school only 3 will make it to the pros. Note, this doesn’t mean they’re going to stay in the pros more than 5 seconds. This doesn’t mean they’re going to get a sneaker deal and be in a Pepsi commercial This simply means they’ll get drafted.” (Odds of Playing).
When it comes to wanting a career in sports, there are multiple professions and paths that lead to your destination. However, of all the options, you better expect to work hard while keeping an open mind if you want to succeed in reaching your goal.
