Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves a the study of how sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, develop mental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations. APA recognizes sport psychology as a proficiency acquired after a doctoral degree in one of the primary areas of psychology and licensure as a psychologist. This proficiency should not be confused with those who have earned a doctoral degree in sport psychology, but are not licensed psychologists.
The most common factors of psychological skills in the field include; anxiety or energy management which is commonly used to help individuals who experience arousal at a level that is not effective (i.e., too high or too low) for optimal performance, to manage this you can try breathing exercises (diaphragmatic breathing, rhythmic breathing), progressive relaxation, meditation, imagery or visualization and cognitive techniques (thought stopping and cognitive restructuring). However, this improved performance is not limited to the basketball court, it extends into the classroom where the students use goal setting, motivation, concentration and confidence control, ultimately to become accepted into college, avoiding a life of drugs, gangs and prison.

Depending on the injury, some athletes are able to return to the sport, others are not so lucky. When they are affected emotionally or mentally, it does not only affect them, but their team, the fans, and even the coaches. In most cases, these injuries and the rehabilitation process are often followed by psychological consequences which can impact the athletes’ well-being, as well as their chances of returning to their sport. The philosophy that a sport psychology consultant adopts breathes life into their work. It puts flesh on bone and gives the knowledge base that the consultant has already acquired a thumping heart and a living soul, providing significance and application to the knowledge acquired in their training. The study results included that there were few differences between the male and female athletes perception of sport psychology except the males tend to view sport psychology as having to do with mental things and females viewed it as having a problem. Both genders seemed to view the barrier of using sport psychology services to be admitting you have a problem and how others (peers) would view it, embarrassment. Other conclusions from this study were that high school athlete has a positive attitude about sport psychology and want to gain a better understanding of the field.
