Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves a the study of how sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, develop mental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations. APA recognizes sport psychology as a proficiency acquired after a doctoral degree in one of the primary areas of psychology and licensure as a psychologist. This proficiency should not be confused with those who have earned a doctoral degree in sport psychology, but are not licensed psychologists.
The most common factors of psychological skills in the field include; anxiety or energy management which is commonly used to help individuals who experience arousal at a level that is not effective (i.e., too high or too low) for optimal performance, to manage this you can try breathing exercises (diaphragmatic breathing, rhythmic breathing), progressive relaxation, meditation, imagery or visualization and cognitive techniques (thought stopping and cognitive restructuring). Attention and concentration control, which is being able to focus ones awareness on relevant cues so they can deal effectively with their current situation.
