Throughout history, there have been many Heroes in the catholic faith. Whether they be mortars, saints, or popes. For my knights of columbus essay I have picked Maximilian Kolbe. St Maximilian Kolbe was born Raymond Kolbe on January 8,1894 in Poland ( part of the Russian empire). Much of his life was strongly influenced By his version of the Virgin Mary he had when he was 12. One year after his vision Raymond and his brother joined the Franciscans and he was given his religious name Maximilian. over the years Maximilian would promote Mary throughout the world He founded monasteries in Japan and India. During World War II Maximillion published an edition of the Knights of the immaculate. The book had very harsh criticism of the
Pope Innocent III to many people is a savior of Christianity. He is thought of very highly because he was one of the most influential and powerful popes of the Middle Ages. Pope Innocent III not only made a mark on everyday citizens of his reign, but especially so to the Roman Catholics. The election of Pope innocent III happened to him at the age of thirty-seven on 8 January 1198, his real name was Lothar of Segni. Many popes before him had let the Christian values slip through their fingers, ultimately leaving no hope of salvation because of the corruption that was occurring in the Church and values being forgotten at every new pope. Pope Innocent III was the first pope to name himself the ‘Vicar of Peter’ to then name himself ‘Vicar of
Question 1: What elements in the life and work of Simone Weil, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and some of the characters portrayed in the movies Dr. Ambrosio mentions speak to you most effectively about the qualities of the secular saint?
St. Maximilian Kolbe's body was cremated by the camp officials on the feast of the Assumption. He had stated years earlier: “I would like to be reduced to ashes for the reason for the Immaculata, and may this dirt be carried over the entire world, so that nothing would stay.” Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a “Martyr of Charity” and “Patron Saint of our tough century” in 1982. St. Maximilian Kolbe is the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement and the with chemicals addicted
Pope Urban II gave the speech, “Fulcher of Chartres on Clermont and Jerusalem”, to convince sinners to go on a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is the act of traveling or seeking something. In this case, it would be for religious beliefs. Before the First Crusade, the Islamic Empire became arguably the most intelligent civilization. Baghdad was the second biggest city in the world because it included complex economic practices, the center of a trade, and higher educations. Alongside the rise of the Islamic Empire, Europe began having power, but the influence was almost immediately lost after Charlemagne’s death. Because Europe has many coasts, they began getting raided. This defensive state all changes with the First Crusade. There are multiple reasons,
The starting point of the first crusade was when Pope Urban II initiated a call to arms during his speech to the Council of Clermont on November 27, 1095. His fiery speech was a result of the Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I, urgently requesting Pope Urban II’s help in fighting the Muslim Turks, after getting word that they were invading lands, pillaging, and converting people to Islam. They had reached Jerusalem and other places in Palestine, so it was imperative that Pope Urban II rally the Bishops and Nobles to action in order to free the Holy Land. Pope Urban II’s speech had a resounding effect on those attending the council, resulting in the Christian Knights and others engaging in a long bloody campaign that would ultimately
Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan priest who had monasteries in Poland and Japan. When the Third Reich invaded Poland in 1938, everything changed. He opened the doors of his monastery in Poland to hide over 2,000 Jewish refugees. The germans found out about this action and arrested him in 1941. After this, Kolbe was shipped off to Auschwitz. During his stay in this concentration camp, one of the prisoners escaped. Because of this, the Nazis took 10 prisoners and put them in Block 13, a gas chamber used to kill prisoners. One of the men scheduled to be killed that day was Francis Gajowniczek, who was begging for his life when the camp commander came to pick him up. After Francis Gajowniczek mentioned his wife and children, Father Kolbe heroically
St. Damien of Molokai was born January 3, 1840. Alongside of his brother, he entered the Contemplative Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary in 1860. After he had a vision of St. Francis Xavier, he realized the path God wanted him to take. This lead him to take his brothers place in a missionary party to Hawaii. He was later ordained as a priest, which is why he is commonly known as Father Damien. After he did his usual work as a priest, he would put his time and effort towards
The journal article written by William Urban provided a different perspective in role played by the Teutonic Knights during the crusades. Within historical analysis, the Teutonic Knights are often reputed as being brutal during their participation in the holy wars. However, Urban’s article does not dwell on the brutality of the Knights.
The books: A Most Holy War by Mark Pegg and The Teutonic Knights by William Urban. Both had a lot of good information for readers; however each book presented many different problems. Urban and Pegg’s books were also difficult to follow for a variety of reasons and the sources were used in a confusing way or not at all. While both books provided a good history of each event, they had many problems throughout.
Norman Cantor, Steven Runciman, and many other famous 20th century historians attacked the crusader; consequently, 20th century historiography has greatly impacted the
The Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), in an effort to reacquaint the faithful to their three-fold dignity of priest, prophet and king received during their baptism, reaffirmed in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, also known as the ad intra (“Church within”) conciliar document Lumen Gentium, that, “…all the faithful, that is, who by Baptism are incorporated into Christ…have been made sharers in their own way in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ and play their part in carrying out the mission of the whole Christian people in the church and in the world” (48). Since the laity, religious, and clergy now had a shared responsibility as the People of God in bringing about the Kingdom of God, no longer would they be as
Due to the escape of one of the prisoners, ten men were thrown into the hunger bunker at Auschwitz. But because of a scared and frightened man, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take his place. Kolbe was aware that his time on earth was almost up, due to disease, so he believed he had no reason to live any longer. St Maximillian Kolbe was born in 1894 in Zdunska Wola, Poland. He is remembered for his heroic actions during one of the cruelest periods of modern history. Kolbe was one of four children, the second son of weaver Julius Kolbe and midwife Maria Dabrowska. His father was German and his mother was Polish. His life was strongly influenced by a childhood vision of the Virgin Mary. Kolbe entered the Franciscan order in 1897 and received
The brigade of Knights moved cautiously through the streets of Rome. They were a part of the Knight’s Templars. They rode through the streets moving towards the Holy See. Their armor glistened in the sun light. Their leader Sir Onfroi rode on his horse glaring at the people in the crowds, their great helms were protecting them from the coldness of the winter. They moved towards the church.
Saint Damien of Molokai was a spectacular man although not that many people know of him. He is a more recent saint, which is the reason not that many people know about him. He was born on January third, 1840 in Belgium and died on April fifteenth, 1889. He lived to be only forty-nine years old. One of his brothers became a priest and two of his sisters became nuns. When Saint Damien was only nineteen years old he joined the Society of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the altar. In addition to joining the Society of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the altar, he also became a priest of the Roman Catholic Church.
The greatest honor we can give to those who have preceded us is to remember their beliefs and values and apply them to our way of living. Making the Benedictine Values a part of our educational, professional, and personal lives is the highest distinction we can pay to the founding father of those values, St. Benedict of Nursia. In this essay, I will reflect on my education of the Benedictine Values, describing what I have learned, the message I am supposed to receive through learning about these values, the area of the values that mean the most to me, how I relate to the values, and how I plan to apply the values during my Professional Practice Experience (PPE). St. Benedict believed strongly in living his life by following in the footsteps of Jesus. The Rules of St. Benedict were written in the six century and are a tradition that people continue to follow to this day (Saint John’s University, 2017, Online).
