Across the United States, there are different licensing procedures and protocol for each state in regards to Licensed Professional Counseling. Pennsylvania’s state licensure requirements were obtained through the Department of Services website under the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

I researched the Texas state laws and the Oregon state laws for the licensing of professional counselors. The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors requires a graduate level degree, supervised practicum experience, passing score for the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, and an internship. Texas offers two levels of credentialing which are the Licensed Professional Counselor Intern (LPC-I) and the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). As a LPC-I, the person is allowed to practice as a counselor while gaining the experience and intern hours needed to be a Licensed Professional Counselor (Counseling licensure in Texas, 2015).
Becoming a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor is not as easy as people may think. Every state has a different process to become a licenses counselor. This paper discusses the difference between prices, hours to even credits. I will be comparing the state of Florida and New York. There are certain process that are the same yet many different. As a student going to school for Clinical Mental Health Counseling you would think every state would be the same.
According to Porter, Gildon, & Zgliczynski (2000), people claiming to be counselors is a serious problem in the state of California because no formal standards are set for appropriate licensure except for that of a marriage counselor. This lack of standards and credentials causes many problems for those seeking advice and assistance with a particular problem. More importantly, the public is not protected even if they take a case to court and the “counselor” is found guilty. What is to be taken away? He can continue to practice because he does not have a certificate to begin with. Lreh
B. The counseling profession itself is a little more than a hundred years old. A license can be gained in almost every state for the profession. In order to unify the profession as a whole though there are still steps that need to be
A mental health counselor is a counseling professional, whose duties involves helping individuals cope with difficult life events, managing mental illnesses, and referring patients to additional resources that can help them. Before they can start counseling, they need to follow their states specific requires. For instance, in Louisiana, one has to obtain a master’s degree from an accredited program, have the required hours of supervised practice and coursework, and pass the National Counselor Examination to be licensed and certified. In addition to receiving a license in this field, an individual has to complete an addition 40 hours of continuing education every year to renew their license. The Mental Health Counseling program, offered at Capella, would satisfy most, if not all, of the licensure requirements in Louisiana.
A counselor must have a license as issued by the state in which they want to practice. One who wants to have a business as a counselor in private practice should think through all the obstacles first according to Remley & Herlihy (2016). One will need to acquire a business license as well as buy insurance for workers’ compensation. They will also need liability insurance and make sure they are acting within all state requirements. One in private practice should have an attorney on hand in case the need for one should arise. If the counselor in private practice is not going to handle all of the billing, payment and taxation issues they will need to hire an accountant. One should also decide if they have the financial stability to open their own business. Personally, I would gain as much experience and expertise as I could prior to establishing my own private
Professional counselors have to meet distinct requirements set by individual states. This work focuses on the requirements counselors have to meet in the state of Alabama. The difference between licensure, certification, and accreditation will be highlighted. The state has two levels of counseling license; the associate licensed counselor, and the licensed professional counselor (LPC). Licensed counselors in other states can apply for licensure through endorsement.
The objective of this work is to examine Texas state laws relating to the counselor certification licensure process. Laws related to school counseling, mental health counseling, addictions counseling and marital family therapy are also be examined.
I would like to lend my expertise and years of experience to the Professional Standards Board. My goal as a member would be to help ensure Social Work remains a pivotal force which provides qualified personnel who provide quality services. Throughout my 22 years as a dedicated Michael E. DeBakey VAMC (MEDVAMC) employee, I have successfully undertaken additional responsibilities that have led to positive impacts for Veterans Care and Transitional Service (VCTS) as well as MEDVAMC on local and national levels. It is important that we as Social Work leaders continue to educate others who may not have a clear understanding of the capabilities and contributions of Social Workers. I have a very strong belief in upholding Social Work values while
When an individual chooses to pursue a life in the role of a counselor, there are a few items that must be established before one can move forward. These items include the field of counseling to practice, the location to practice in, and a college that offers the desired degree. Once this process has been completed, the next step would be for the individual to adhere to the states' requirements and began the application process to become certified or a licensed counselor. The process to become a counselor is technical as it requires practice and scope, a formal credentialing process, and training to ensure it is effective for clients, counselors, and service providers which will be outlined in these paragraphs.
Nevada requires a master’s or doctoral level degree to become a licensed clinical professional counselor from a CACREP program. The counseling program must have 10 content specific areas. Candidates must take the NCMHCE before licensure and must have board approval to register for the exam. (State of Nevada Board of Examiners, 2016)
Firstly there is a difference between the credentialing committee and the “board” The board is made up of eight professional and for public members. The board regulates the professional part of counselors. The credentialing committee for each discipline that the board oversees is made up of four professional and one public member. There is a bit of a catch as two professional members from the committee sit on the board. That means there is only two unaffiliated members on each committee that are not part of the board. The committee makes recommendations to the board in regards to licenses.
The national level licensure indicate that a counselor has passed the national exam, but cannot practice in the state. The state board will indicate the different type of licensures at the state level and as following: (LPC) Licensed Professional Counselor, (LMHC) Licensed Medical Health Counselor, (LCPC) Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and (LPCC) Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. The correct licensure is provided form the state when a counselor call. As established and regardless of their specific titles that each individual recognize them as all are considered professional licensed counselor.
One of the strengths of this syllabus is the learning outcomes of the course based on the educational policy and accreditation standards [EPAs] of the Council of Social Work Education [CSWE]. The presentation of EPAs competencies, which implicates what students will be able to do if they complete the course successfully, helps construct students’ perception of the course’s purpose in the preparation for their future as social workers. The syllabus also does a good job when connecting social work core competencies with practice behaviors and related assignments. In short, at the first two pages, the syllabus would help students perceive clearly the objectives and expectations they could set up for themselves during the
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a national association of educational programs and individuals that confirms and improves the quality of social work education to become a professional job.
