I began my homeschooled educated at the age of five and have continued to be home educated up to my graduation from secondary school level. Being home educated aided me to take initiative and become a self-motivated individual. Conducting my education from home helped me to concentrate on my studies without the added pressure that comes with attending a public school. It also helped me attain good problem solving skills, as occasionally I would be challenged with solving complex questions. I am very grateful to my parents for the opportunity to be home educated, as I believe I have been given a great academic start in life.
Using the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum has equipped me with many qualities to prepare me for my future.
In the article “Why I Homeschool: The Answers Change Almost as Fast as My Kids Do. But My Commitment to At-Home Learning Remains Strong.” Amy Thornton-Kelly initially home schooled her three children in order to spend more time with them. This was her only reason, or so she thought. Amy Thornton–Kelly explains the many reasons why homeschooling is the best decision she has made. First, she explains that once her husband and her considered homeschooling “the floodgates opened” to the many benefits of homeschooling. It alleviates stress, allows her kids to learn in a healthier environment and allows her to teach her kids in a more profound way. Second, Thornton-Kelly states that homeschooling allows her kids to better master subjects,
Home schooling is another way that children can achieve an education in a smaller and more relaxed learning environment. It also allows children to go at their own pace and have more time to get their work done. Home schooling can be a better way for kids to get their education especially if the child has a problem with being around other kids or being away from home. Home schooling allows children to learn at home in familiar surroundings, which can have a positive effect on kids if they have trouble adjusting to a classroom and being around other kids. Being at home, doing school work also allows kids to work in a stress free environment by means of getting one-on-one attention if they are having difficulty understanding or solving a problem.
This especially pertains to families who are religious or spiritual. Many choose to homeschool because of religion. With children spending around eight hours a day learning at a school or at home, it can be easy for personal beliefs to lose priority. In some cases, children may be very talented and not have time to do schooling. They may be good at a sport, singing, playing an instrument, or acting and choose to pursue this at a very young age. For some of these children who choose to pursue their dreams, they may choose to get an education later in life, but for others, success allows for them to not receive an education. With the main focus not being on school for these children, it allows them to focus on who they are as a person, and naturally allows for them to be more creative. For some, not going to school alleviates the pressures and social standards of other children and teachers, allowing for kids to be
Being homeschooled gives you options for yourself and your surroundings. “They’ve had complete control over their bodies, minds and spirits almost all their lives. As a result, they know exactly who they are and what they’re passionate about” (Source B). Homeschooling makes you think outside of the box. Think learning on a new level, you can still
Before college, I was homeschooled for the entirety of my life. When I tell people this, their initial reactions vary from shock to raw curiosity. “Do you feel like you missed out?” is always the first question, or some variation of it. No, I always reply, without hesitation. My parents gave me the gift of owning my education. It was not spoon fed to me. It was mine to shape and explore, and I did so by pouring through books and scouring the Internet on subjects ranging from classical literature to computer programming. Though a challenge, their gift instilled in me valuable traits, which I feel I would not have acquired otherwise. Though difficult, I learned to become independent, self directed, and curious. If I had to pick out one trait
Before presenting both the positive and the negative aspects of homeschooling it is worth mentioning that the deciding factor for parents choosing to homeschool as opposed to public schooling generally falls into a biased opinion of public schooling. As mentioned in an NPR radio interview, “the number one reason parents give is the desire to provide religious or moral instruction and that the second most popular reason, closely followed behind, was a concern about the school environment” Martin, M. (2013). These type of reasoning for home schooling presents some valid question, such as, who determines what the best approach or the best form of education? Is the quality of education
Homeschooling, down to its essence, is just school done in the comfort of your home. Compared to regular schooling, there is far more interaction and one on one time with the teacher, and more dedication on the homeschooled and the homeschooled alone. This is great for those who cannot learn with others, be it that they cannot keep up with the rest of the group or they simply cannot focus on what is going on with a number of others doing the same.
I was approached a few years ago about directing the teaching and learning for my local church. I was hesitant, but I am delighted that I answered the call. I have spent four (4) years of study in the Certificate of Progress (COPP) Program and my biblical knowledge and spiritual growth have been a blessing. I have realized that although I have spent my life in the church, My work was limited to serving on committees and proudly be a member in good standing. Being a member in good standing may have merit, but it is not what we are called to do as Christians. Although I regularly attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, I realized that my biblical knowledge was seriously lacking.
Homeschooling is not as recent as some people think it to be. In fact, it has a long history and has advocates behind it such as the famous
Were you ever homeschooled? I was! My entire pre-collegiate school experience was in the home, with the exception of a handful of external classes, all extracurricular. Understandably, my parents were concerned about the current system of education in the U.S., and wanted to give us the children the best circumstances for success possible. Throughout Elementary and Senior High, everything was excellent! Upon reaching Junior and Senior years however, college was looming heavy, and I knew that I needed to become familiar with working under other teachers, working with a group of other individuals, and working independently of assistance.
As a home school student, I have flourished in activities that otherwise would not have been available to me. My high school has centered around politics and speech and debate tournaments. The flexibility in my schedule has allowed me to travel to pursue my goals. My parents have allowed me to maximize on my experiences throughout high school.
Vivian, I want to applaud you on how dedicated you are to getting your education. I am glad you attend a church where they fellowship and share information with each other to help and encourage one another. I take stories like yours and tell them to the kids I work with so they can understand the sacrifices people to better themselves and their families. Your adventure continues to climb higher and higher on the ladder of success because you put God first in your life and he has truly shined his light on
Homeschooling allows me to teach my children life skills I feel are important. We garden, raise chickens, cook, and sew. They also learn to budget their own time. When they waste time, they have less time for their own recreational activities. From a young age, they have learned the importance of time management and
Therefore, I was not taking anything away from the institution other than the learning material. At Campbell University, I feel I am growing as a person, gaining more positive influence, and creating a great path towards becoming a stronger, active disciple of Christianity. I am obtaining a degree in Homeland Security and this degree can have a positive influence on making me a disciple of God in my future endeavors. Presumably my future career plans will involve going into many dangerous and hazardous situation’s. I will continue to prosper through God’s will and influence others in his
Homeschooling has it’s benefits than going to a traditional school. Homeschooling students tend to get better grades and take more college classes. In the article “Homeschooling Statistics: What Research Reveals About Homeschooling” by Laura Powell is about those students who are homeschooled and how they do better than those who go to a traditional school, “The homeschooled students came in with a higher ACT score(25.0 compared to 14.7).” This means that those who are homeschooled score way better than those in a traditional school. Laura Powell as well said, “The study also showed that the longer a child was home schooled the better the score was.” This means that if you are homeschooled longer than the
