To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe”. I have given great consideration and planning into continuing my education and pursing an advanced degree in nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Over the last nine months, I have researched many advanced practice nursing programs and UAB offers the MSN online program of my interest. The online program will enable the opportunity to continue working and allow for the application of newly learned principles and skills to my every day nursing practice. I believe UAB will offer the opportunities required to excel as a mastered-prepared nurse. The Family Nurse Practitioner specialty is my primary area of interest. Becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner will give me the advanced training needed to provide primary care, preventive health services, and education to all ages. My second choice is the Adult-Gero Nurse specialy program. As an adult gero nurse practitioner I will deliver the same services and care as a family nurse practitioner with the exception to the pediatric population.
I have been a registered nurse for two years. Prior to becoming a registered nurse, I was a licensed practical nurse for two years. During the time working as a licensed practical nurse at a long-term care facility, I realized I wanted to expand my role as a professional nurse. After becoming a registered nurse, I went to work as a case manager for a home health & hospice
I will be steps closer to my aspiring goals. However, most importantly the graduate program will help me reach my primary goal of impacting the health of the community as a whole. My dream of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner will allow me to help patients increase their overall health outcomes while managing their primary health concerns. I see myself specifically working as a Family nu Nurse Practitioner with different population across the life span from newborn to geriatrics in a family clinic aiding those with less access to healthcare resources. Being working as RN in the hospital setting, I witnessed numerous family and community members fall susceptible to diseases that could have been prevented or better managed with the correct help. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I want to effectively assess, diagnose, educate, communicate, follow-up, and provide personalized holistic care. As I mentioned before becoming a family nurse practitioner will give me the professional latitude to diagnose, prescribe, and manage the overall care of a patient including the emphasis on prevention and education throughout the patient's
In addition, a DNP degree will help me better serve my community by advocating for quality and safety healthcare system. Once attained, I would seek employment at either a school or university with the mission of educating nursing students to practice the highest quality of patient care. One of the major issues facing the nursing profession today is the lack of advance nursing practices. The medical field is in crisis. Doctors are stretched to the limits, and patients are demanding more advanced care. To alleviate some of the concerns facing medicine in the 21st century, advance nursing practices is a vital area in the contribution of understanding and working within the bounds of a team structure, and the promotion of communication between the interdisciplinary health team. The mission of the advance nursing practice is to help individual patients, and their families, determine and achieve optimum physical, mental and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work Nurses are among the largest professional care group within the healthcare service industry. We are responsible for providing quality care and assisting patients towards independent and healthy living. Considering the changing working environment, health care practitioners like nurses are
Health care is a fundamental element to sustaining the welfare of our society. The ability to become a student in the Grand Canyon University (GCU), Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, takes me one step closer to being able to achieve my dream of playing a vital role in helping our society towards disease prevention. My experience in the acute care setting has reinforced my passion in disease prevention and health preservation. My short term goal is to be able to successfully complete the required course work. Secondly, I want to be able to acquire the necessary certifications to be able to practice as a FNP. The program at GCU will provide me with the knowledge, and skills I will need to effectively develop my role. The long term goal I have set for myself is to reach the Doctorate level degree at some point in my career. I would like to practice at an independent level and have my own practice in
Due to the hands-on learning opportunities and experiences I have been given, in addition to skills and knowledge I will achieve through working as a Registered Nurse throughout my journey to becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am certain I am ready to begin this life changing endeavor.
The AANP advocates for advanced practice nurses at both the state and federal level. This organization works diligently to advance and protect the ability and right of all nurses to practice at the full scope of their educational background, while also working to prevent any loss of independence. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University in May 2017, successful passed the necessary national certification and obtained my Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner license from the state of Florida. My education has provided me with the skills and knowledge to assess, diagnose and treat patients in a dedicated, compassionate and caring manner. My background includes providing care in an acute care setting as a registered nurse and interning within the Martin Health Care System as a family nurse practitioner student. During my internship, I practiced teamwork, clinical excellence, and became proficient in
It’s truly a blessing to be a part of such a great profession. Where you are lifted up by your fellow nurses during times of happiness and distress. Working as a licensed practical nurse has allowed me the opportunity to impact patients’ lives in positive ways. When people enter my health care facility for care, they have certain expectations, they are not always at their best and need the best level of care to help them achieve their prior level of function. After nine and a half years of working as a licensed practical nurse, I decided that it was time to pursue a RN degree. Although, I have enjoyed my career as a LPN I understand that the scope of it is not as wide as that of an RN. I am choosing the pursue an RN because I want to not only enrich my life but I also want to provide a higher quality of care for my
I decided to further my nursing career by going back to school to obtain a graduate degree in Family Nurse Practitioner. For me, it was a logical choice, as I love to help my patients to the most of my ability but at the same time I felt limited by my current scope of practice. A degree in FNP will enable and equip me with the knowledge and skills to care for a wide range of patient population. It will also place me in a position of leadership to bring about much needed changes and advocacy in patient care and also for nursing as a profession.

A career in nursing is not an easy choice; nursing is hard work. The field of nursing requires individuals who are knowledgeable, competent, and committed. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) must possess an aptitude for managing complex circumstances, continuous learning, adaptability, critical change, differing interdisciplinary demands, radical technological shifts, and the inadequacies of resource allocation and time constraints (Sadri, 2012). Individuals not prepared to confront and embrace these realities should not seek entry here. Those who do accept the challenges of advanced nursing practice will find that these prevailing conditions and circumstances will yield levels of challenge, satisfaction,
The reason that I want to get my bachelor of Science in Nursing at Liberty University is because I want to be able to work in the hospitals but have a stronger Christian outlook on medicine than other nurses. I want my patients to look at me and not only see me, but I want them to see Christ though me. I do not just want to be in Liberty’s Nursing program because of the Christian outlook that it will give me, but because it has a great reputation. I want to go to a college where I know that I am learning everything that I possibly can and know that I will be fully equipped for my career. I am currently an EMT and firefighter and I want to be able to walk further with my patients then just into the front doors of the Emergency room. I want to
The advanced nursing practice role that I plan to obtain from South University is The Certified Nurse Practitioner, to be precise Family Nurse Practitioner. “ CNPs are members of the health care delivery system, practicing autonomously in areas as diverse as family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, geriatrics and women’s health care”(Consensus Model for APRN regulation, 2008, p.9). Family nurse practitioners provide a wide range of health care services that revolve around the family unit, from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counselling across the life span. They provide initial, ongoing, and comprehensive care, includes taking comprehensive histories, providing physical examinations and other health assessment and screening activities, and diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with acute and chronic illnesses and diseases. This includes ordering, performing, supervising, and interpreting laboratory and imaging studies; prescribing medication and durable medical equipment; and making appropriate referrals for patients and families. Clinical CNP care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and counseling as well as the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic
Ever since I began nursing school in 2012 at the University of Texas At El Paso Texas, I dreamt of furthering my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. During my clinical rotations I received many exposures that showed me insight into the invaluable job Nurse Practitioners offered to their patients. Through my own personal experience having received care by nurse Practitioners has left me no doubt about my desire to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Although advanced nursing practice is a broad field with several roles defined within, the author of this essay has identified the role of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) as the focus for this assignment. The FNP role was selected as it is the specialty track in which the author is furthering his professional nursing education. The Family Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse (RN) who possesses advanced clinical training, skills, and competencies acquired through the completion of a Master’s or Doctoral nursing degree in order to provide family-centered primary care to individuals across the lifespan. (American Association of Nurse Practitioners [AANP], 2015).
Since the start of my nursing career, I made the decision early on to get a few years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience and then continue on the further my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. My first job after graduating with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), I worked in Pennsylvania as an oncology and hospice RN in a small rural hospital. After gaining one years’ experience, I decided to further my career by starting a career as a travel RN and simultaneously I enrolled at Chamberlain College of Nursing in the FNP program. After graduation, I plan on settling down in Washington and start my career as an FNP. Throughout this paper, I will effectively explore the scope of practice for APNs in Washington, complete a personal assessment that reflects my strengths and weaknesses, explore local and professional organizations that can be accessed to gain information on employment opportunities, determine
