Steve Gleason: New Orleans Hero Heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. Not all heroes wear capes or have huge logos on their chest but are the ones who go beyond the call of duty. Heroes step up in times of need when most will not. A hero can also be someone who uses their disability to make a difference rather than looking at their disability as a hindrance. I believe Steve Gleason qualifies as the perfect example of this type of hero. Steve Gleason, former New Orleans Saints player, became famous when he blocked a punt versus the Atlanta Falcons during the first game back in the Super Dome. The other reason Steve Gleason is famous is because of his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and how he has used his disability to make a difference. Steve Gleason exemplifies heroic qualities through his courage, altruism, and selflessness. Steve Gleason’s battle with ALS hasn’t been easy, yet he shows us what courage really is. Steve remained strong and determined to beat ALS. What sets Steve Gleason apart from most others is that instead of becoming self focused on beating ALS, he became determined to beat it and help others win the fight. His choice to fight this disease is impressive enough but his work to bring worldwide awareness to ALS through his own organization, Team Gleason (slogan, “No white flags”) goes beyond …show more content…
For no other reason than it is the right thing to do, Steve travels across the nation raising awareness for ALS. He hosts his own Gleason Fest, which all proceeds go towards technology that can help improve those afflicted by ALS. He also had legislation passed, The Steve Gleason Act, which made social security act provide Medicare recipients with the ability to use eye tracking accessories for devices that generate speech and to remove the rental cap durable medical equipment under the Medicare Program with respect to devices that generate
A hero is a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Jackie Robinson is a person who fits all these qualities.Jackie Robinson is a true hero. He has done many things no ordinary person would have done. Some examples of things he has done is that he has broke the color barrier, he fought for integration for major leagues, he was a very influential player. He never gave up. He kept on trying. Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother raised Jackie and his 4 other brothers. They encountered a lot of prejudice while living there. Jackie Robinson is a hero because he has long history filled with great things. He broke the color barrier, and he showed
A hero can be referred to as a brave, courageous, and unique individual who is fearless. In the science-fiction short story, "Harrison Bergeron," written by Kurt Vonnegut, everybody lives in a Dystopian society where the people have worked on changing the Constitution so everyone is completely equal. In this story, in order to make everybody equal, whoever is smarter, stronger, faster, or prettier than anybody else is given handicaps that they must wear at all times, according to the law. Even though they wear handicaps, some people are still too strong for the handicaps, such as Harrison Bergeron. These types of people can either be considered a hero or threat to society. Harrison Bergeron is a hero to society because he could cast a
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS is also named Lou Gehrig’s disease because he was the first person to bring ALS to a national attention in the 1930’s. Lou Gehrig’s amazing professional baseball career was ended short by this horrific disease. There are multiple treatments for ALS, but no cure for this fatal disease. In 2014, ALS was brought to major attention by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Although Lou has the disease named after him, there are several other notable individuals who have been diagnosed with ALS. These individuals include Stephen Hawking, Jim Hunter, Steve Gleason, George Yardley
When it comes to heroes, there are many people who come to mind, but the ones that are most special to me are the ones who work towards making our planet and ocean better. Animals and oceans are huge interest of mine and celebrities that use their platform to help create a better tomorrow are always heroes in my eyes. Three of these celebrities that are heroes of mine are Ellen DeGeneres, Angelina Jolie & Maroon 5 but more specifically Adam Levine.
Alex Lickerman,a psychologist, gives a very detailed description of how he portrays a hero. Many people are considered heroes for minor things. A hero is not about giving money to charities or visiting people in need. Although these deeds are productive, it does not make people a hero for doing these actions. A genuine hero will risk their life or try to save a life.Heros, are not looking to be rewarded for their actions. People simply do these deeds, because they want to make a difference in helping others. They should support people in time of need. The person I chose that qualifies as a hero is Richard Nares. He has started a program to help children receive chemo, who are unable to transport themselves. Nares travels around the country for children, he hopes to give hope and he has a major support system supporting him.
Multiple people say they created the Ice bucket challenge but one was about a teenager who slide into home base while playing baseball he went to the doctor and the doctors found out he had ALS. His parents were shocked, ALS is one of not very many incurable diseases. His mother wanted to raise awareness starting the challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge helps people with ALS, anyone can do the Ice bucket challenge and the movement is to raise awareness.
In early 1939, Lou Gehrig, one of the greatest New York Yankee baseball players ever, took himself out of a ballgame after playing in a record setting 2,130 consecutive games. He was noted by his teammates to drag his feet in the field, struggle with routine plays, and his batting average had plummeted. After baffling with many local physicians, he arrived at the Mayo Clinic where he was diagnosed with a “rare disease” – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Mitsumoto, 2001). Today ALS is no longer considered rare and is widely recognized as a relentless and devastating neurodegenerative disease. In recent years the media has covered ALS to promote awareness and support ongoing research to enhance diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life. Unfortunately, the disease is incurable and treatment options are currently limited.
Helen Keller was a woman who had gotten a sickness as a child and because of the sickness she became deaf, not only was she deaf though she also became blind. Despite these challenges she never gave up, she learned to communicate with others, earned college degrees, and wrote over a dozen books that inspired people. Many doubted her, but she never gave up, showing enormous amounts of perseverance. Another example would be Martin Luther King Jr. He was a very passionate and positive man who fought for equality among blacks and whites. Because of his dream of equal rights, he had to face many obstacles. While most would've given up, he took that obstacle and fought against it. This makes them heroes because they were stronger than the average individual and chose to take their challenges in a good way and move
John Barth, and acclaimed writer said, “Everyone is necessarily the hero of his own life story” (Hero/Heroism). To me that means everyone is a hero in one way or another. Volunteering is an example of being a hero. You could be helping disabled people by volunteering at Camp Courageous. Deloras Propst volunteers at the Camp Courageous Garage Sale here in Manchester Iowa. The garage sale raised $115,000 last year for the camp (Propst). This is one reason I count Deloras Propst as a hero.
BANG!!! It was towards the end second period when a huge clap of thunder startled my working students and I. “Ms. Smith” said one of my students eagerly said “are we going to leave school early because of the storm?” “Probably not,” I answered. “it wasn’t bad this morning. It’ll pass soon.” I made sure my voice was steady to hide my uncertainty. The news had said there was going to be a light rainstorm, it was probably just some rogue thunder.
Heroes are a big part of our society, as it comes to no surprise people have heroes who are normally older than themselves moreover at a higher maturity level than the person, however, in this case, it is exactly opposite. Austin Tyler Causby’s hero’s though not a typical hero would most definitely made a hefty contribution to his life. In the year 2009 Austin received news from his mother, consequently he was devastated, his mother was pregnant. This made Austin’s world collapse on him, he was an only child for almost ten years and now there was going to be another one around to take his place. Once little Payton Bradley was born Austin became increasingly upset with the attention being taken off of him. He became so jealous that at one point he tried to sit on him to
and powers beyond the range of any human. The hero himself bring a mystical quality to the story
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is named after Lou Gehrig, who was a famous baseball player in 1930s. The French refer to it as Maladie de Charcot because the first recording of ALS was in 1869 by a French doctor named Jean-Martin Charcot. Stephen Hawking is one of the more famous people with ALS. He has had ALS since the start of his adult life, and he has been living with it for more than 50 years. Most people die from it three to five years after the symptoms become noticeable. This is why Stephen Hawking’s case is very special. It was just after his 21 birthday when he found out something was wrong. Yet he is still living and doing the most he can with his life. For
Heroes come in many forms. Some of those forms ware capes and some like to scare little children and ware tights, but some are like Malala Yousafzai who is still fighting for girl’s right to education around the world. Or like Susan B. Anthony who fought for woman’s right to vote.
What is a hero? In my view a hero is someone that you admire. You may
