You don’t find very many families nowadays that are constantly moving and traveling throughout our country, stopping to live in a place for a couple months, then leaving for another place for a couple months and doing that constantly. But the Walls are a family that does do that. In the entertaining book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, a young girl named Jeannette Walls learns how to become successful in life through constantly being on the move, and living with her parents, Rex and Rose Mary who would be in a huge fight one minute and would be hugging each other the next. Through Jeannette’s unusual childhood, she learned to develop acceptance towards herself, braveness towards her fears, and how to figure out the most important things in life, which helped her become the successful person that she grew up to be.

This book The Glass Castle is about Jeanette and her siblings, Lori, Brian, and Maureen withstanding many hardships living under the roof of their adolescent and neglectful parents, Rex Walls and Rose Mary Walls. Now the Walls’ parents are not first-rate parents, but they can be second-rate parents because they don’t take care of the Walls’ children basic needs and they don’t treat Lori, Brian, Jeanette the way parents should. Although they have some flaws there is a little good in them.

In Jeannette Walls memoir The Glass Castle she describes her father’s dream of building his family a glass castle to live in. She writes, “Dad...was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert” (Walls 25).

Social Facts. Social facts are basically the givens in a society and are not necessarily generated or a result of current generations, however they are pre-existing conditions for human agency. They pretty much limit the freedom of individual thought and shapes their beliefs, ways of thinking and etc. into a more societal norm than just an individual thought. With the Chicago Heat Wave it was a social fact that had the elderly been more socially inclusive or didn’t keep their doors locked all of the time then they may have had the opportunity to get the help they needed. The Abundant Table inspires me because they see the value in allowing children to see where their food comes from. From their trips to local farms to growing and harvesting over 700 lbs. of carrots and other vegetables each week for local school lunch programs, their dedication is admirable to see the extent in which they go to in order to make sure kids are involved in their nutrition and is an ideal in which I see great value in. With only about 100 kids in the program, I could see every Friday having a local item for snack and having the kids know where it comes from and where the farm is located. Also, I will advocate next summer to have the children visit a farm like the ones mentioned on The Abundant Table’s website, since there would
