Walden’s Program and Competency-Based Education
In a competency-based education, competencies are used to inform the logistics of a professional psychology program and the sequence of training which are all vital in taking the student from a novice to a competent professional. Considerably, evaluating a program of study requires the determination as to the influence of the competencies on the program's design. As such, competencies involve relationship, assessment, intervention, diversity, research/evaluation, management/supervision, and consultation/education (NCSPP, 2007). In line with this assertion, this paper will provide an analysis of the Walden Clinical Psychology Program, as well as its strength and weaknesses.

In addition, the Psychology program of Walden University seeks to facilitate a positive change starting from individuals to global communities. Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, General Psychology, Health Psychology, and Social Psychology are the specializations offered by the university (Walden University, 2017). These programs enable learners to integrate the theory of Psychology and research, as well as the use of established methods of scientific inquiry, so that they are able to appreciate evidence-based practices which make use of individual and cultural diversity (Walden University, 2017). Donovan and Ponce (2009) wrote that essential underpinnings of professional psychology are not usually emphasized in training. Hence, it is vital for learners to have a reflection and awareness of professional identity and relationship-building skills as they are trained to become professional psychologists. This instance is catered by the Walden Clinical Psychology Program, specifically under the General Psychology. This specialization is teaching focused and research focused. The approach of said specialization enables learners to acquire foundational and functional competencies which they need to become professional psychology in the …show more content…
Other than that, the program also seeks to develop client resources, may it be internally or externally, and remediate difficulties and challenges (Walden University, 2017). The program also seeks to prevent, diagnose, and treat intrapsychic and interpersonal psychological problems (Walden University, 2017). Furthermore, the program teaches foundational psychological theory, which are based on research design and methods; ethical practices; empirically supported assessments; scholarly contribution; and lifelong commitment to learning and critical thinking (Walden University, 2017). These strengths hone learners to become efficient professional psychologists once they
In 1981, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs was established (CACREP, 2016b). Before its official establishment it went through challenges. These challenges were for CACREP to be an accrediting agency for masters- and doctoral-level programs and establishing a Commission on Standards Implementation (Sweeney, 1992). CACREP has six standards for which current and future accreditation programs must follow (CACREP, 2016c). The purpose of these standards are to have are able to define counseling and distinguish themselves from other behavioral health fields. Students and programs receive benefits from CACREP accreditation. Students who attend a CACREP-accredited program received the benefit of being taught by faculty members with a counseling degree from a CACREP-accredited program, core courses for the counseling profession, and later become faculty member in a CACREP-accredited program (CACREP, 2016d, 2016e). Also, programs receive the benefit of institutional support, faculty members with one set responsibility, and continuous evaluation (CACREP, 2016d, 2016g). Since CACREP creation, it has overcome many challenges. Now with a changing society, CACREP must move towards licensure portability and unified counseling profession.
Capuzzi and Gross (2013) say there is a continual struggle for professional identity. One issue is whether counseling will develop as a united profession or as separate specialties. Other issues are multicultural counseling and social justice issues also, the organizational structure of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Remley and Herlihy (2015) address confusion about accreditation of specialties and varying state licensure and certification requirements for the Council for Accreditation and of Counseling and Counseling Related Educational Programs
Dr. William Harrar’s career in psychology started at East Stroudsburg University. Dr. Harrar graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1978. He then began using his degree as a residential program worker and then as a program specialist. Dr. Harrar then entered
Students will be taught to code individuals using the LPFS criteria by reading fictional sample cases created by the course instructor. The instructors of the course are individuals who are clinically trained psychologists and have worked with the LPFS before. Because there are two campuses collecting data, the cases will be the same across all of the courses and coded by all of the instructors teaching the course to ensure that there is agreement about the LPFS scores given. Once the sample cases are decided upon, they will be distributed to the students. Before coding the case, the students will be given a brief lecture on personality disorders and the implication of the LPFS into assessing personality dysfunction. The students will then be instructed to code the case and will be graded on completion of the assignment. Upon completing the assignment, the instructor will go over the cases and give feedback regarding the codes. This will involve the instructor giving the codes that they decided on with their colleagues for each dimension of the LPFS.
The basic definition of psychology is the study of human minds and there function, with respect to the affects the human mind has on behavior. The field of psychology is one of the most diverse fields that continue to expand and branch out into a plethora of distinguishing subfields; some subfields include retail marketing, legal work, social work and education (Sternberg, 2007). When deciding what career path to select one has to consider the level of education and scholarship they are willing to pursue. Pursuing and completing an undergraduate degree will earn an individual the title of a reflective scholar. A reflective scholar is a graduate that has completed a Bachelors or Bachelorette degree. Next, is the practitioner-scholar, which, is an individual that has graduated with a Masters degree. Following the practitioner-scholar is the scholar-practitioner, who is a graduate that has complete a program at a Doctoral level (McClintock, 2003). Each level of scholarship entails a pristine level of knowledge about the practices, strategies and techniques needed to establish quality and efficient
My Junior year AP Psychology course didn’t just teach me about the human brain, social patterns and mental disorders -- it taught me about myself. By the end of the first semester of that class, I knew that I had found my calling: to study the human mind and give professional aid to those who suffer from mental disorders. I am confident that the University of Wisconsin-Madison will help me fulfill this goal with its world-renowned Psychology program. UW-Madison is the home of numerous breakthroughs in Psychological science and students who have changed the course of the history of Psychology, such as Abraham Maslow (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs) and Harry Harlow (Harlow’s Monkey Experiments). The idea of studying at such an esteemed university is thrilling to me and I’m eager to pursue my education there.
Review the program descriptions below and describe how a degree from the School of Psychology & Counseling would facilitate your personal and professional goals. (50-100 words)
Psychologists work in a vast array of areas with a myriad of clients; school children may be assessed for special services or supports in school based on individual needs, adults may self refer for various reasons including stress, marital issues, anxiety, or an infinite assortment of other potential personal reasons, or those facing the legal system may be assessed for their ability to stand trial. It is up to the psychologist to be educated in the tools available to them in their chosen field and how to best use them in the situations presented so the client is best served. In order to best select a proper assessment tool, often it is necessary to conduct an intake interview in order to obtain historical background from the
To me psychology in itself is a beautiful mosaic piece hanging in museum and a Mozart’s symphony piece paying in the background. My interest in clinical psychology dates back to my years in high school, where I excelled in psychology. When I was a senior, I took a second-year course in psychology at my high school. This advanced-level AP psychology class was engaging and interesting, and earned an A. Since then all I can remember, I have been motivated to understand human thought, feeling, and behavior. It seemed only logical that I pursue a career in clinical psychology.
I recently completed a Master’s degree in Counseling psychology through a mentored low residency program at the American International College in Springfield, MA. As such, I was able to improve my academic skills and obtained practical experience from my clinical internship. My inherent enthusiasm to help others and be a positive difference maker in their lives predisposes me to seek doctoral pursuit as I aim is to develop a more robust understanding of the nuances and complexities surrounding behavior and cognition of human beings. More specifically, I aspire to develop a more
Psychologists want to learn and know more in their field and they want to help people.
The continuum reflects the view that as psychologist we all hold the doctrine of studying the mind, its affects on behavior and ways through research and practice, we can improve humankind (Wasserman and Kram, 2009). Reflecting on the models, I realized neither describes where I am now. I currently view myself as a learner, a student with goals of becoming a successful practitioner-scholar. My success as a practitioner-scholar lies in acquiring knowledge of the history of psychology, becoming an analytical researcher and applying these skills to produce invaluable forms of communication. In order to become a successful practitioner-scholar, acquiring knowledge of the history of psychology is quintessential in my long-term plans to becoming a practitioner-scholar. The history of psychology in America and its role in the education setting and community at large dates back to after World War II (Peterson 2006). Intellectually gifted scientists who were brilliant researchers became the scholars of psychology. As scholars, they taught from a scientist, research perceptive. Therefore, when psychologists begin to leave the academic setting of universities and enter professional careers, they did so as science or scholar practitioners (Peterson 2006). According to Peterson (2006), education by scientists, training as scholars, with little to no professional preparation, sparked the great debate between the two models. The old saying, “you don’t
After a thorough review of more than forty Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology, I have chosen to apply to Fielding Graduate University because my goals fit with the program. Due to the knowledge and training specific to clinical psychology that Fielding will provide and the six values that include academic
These are the skills and competencies I have learned through my studies at Walden University. Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, & Fouad, et al. (2009) stated professionalism comes from my respect for those who need help. Integrity can be built with confidence in the therapist. Attitudes are charitable, polite, caring emotions toward others that fuel my motivation toward helping. This concern welfare of others comes from my religious and personal experiences as a child and young adult.
In the counseling profession, having knowledge of the theoretical approaches and which ones will be essential based on your standpoint of human nature, problems, and changes for an individual is important. Having a clear understanding of the approaches is key, but the counselor’s knowledge of his or her own principles, life experiences and viewpoints will define how the counselor will effectively perform their job.
