What is stress?
My definition of stress is the unforeseen, surprising response of the brain, to pleasant and bothersome stimuli. Selye (1936) identifies stress to be recognized by all, but nobody comprehends what it is. All of us have been exposed to stress; however, each one of us interprets stress differently, and our coping strategies vary from individual to individual. As a matter of fact, some people get motivated with stress, and it enhances both mental and physical performances while others succumb to depression and serious medical predicaments.

To point out, I thrive on a moderate amount of stress. I view it as a challenge to be motivated, to work harder, think smarter and understand things more thoroughly. Being resilient in the face of adversity is always my mantra in life. Flinchbaugh, Luth, & Li (2015, p. 325) implied that stressful episodes can generate both positive and adverse effects on life's fulfillment. By the same token, Boswell, Olson-Buchanan, & LePine (2004, p. 168) asserts that challenge stressor is described as difficult tasks that can improve a person's expertise, comprehension, and abilities.
To manage the burden of stress, I adopted a reasonable number of sound strategies that helped me, to be less reactive and more understanding of these stressful conditions. These strategies are as follows: First and the most important of all is prayer, Shapiro (2014) stated the following serenity prayer: God, grant me the serenity to endure the things I cannot correct, the strength to improve the things I can, and the understanding to know the difference. Stress is described as a psychological and psychological and physical strain or tension generated by physical, emotional, social, economical or occupation circumstances, events, or experience that are difficult to manage or endure (Andrew M. Colman, 2015). Stress can affect all aspects of your life, which include your emotional, behaviours thinking ability, and psychical health (webmd, 2016). More than one in five Australian have reported mental health issue as a source of stress (psychology, 2014).
The definition of stress according to the Oxford dictionary is “A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.”
Stress is one of our biggest enemies. It affects our health, our personality, and our relationships
Stress is defined as the “non specific response of the body to any demand for change”. It was coined by Hans Selye in 1936. A highly subjective phenomenon. There are many signs of having/getting stress; Physical, Psychological, Behavioural and Emotional.
Our book describes stress as “any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one’s well-being and tax one’s coping ability” (Weiten, 2014). Stress is not necessarily a traumatic, life destroying event. It can be as simple a small change in one’s daily schedule. People will have multiple stresses throughout their lifetime. Some will be little and daily, but overtime these add up and can affect you in many ways. Stress can be positive or negative and can take many forms; a few being frustration, internal conflict, change, and pressure. All of which make almost a daily appearance in my life (Weiten, 2014).
Stress is a very common everyday thing. People have stress so much that most of the time they don’t even know how much it’s affecting them. Stress can really affect your body, mind, and behavior. It is a normal response to situations that make you feel upset or threatened in a way. Stress is the body’s way of change. The change can either be good or bad.
Stress, if not properly dealt with, can take a heavy toll on our health. Learning to deal with stressors can appear easier for some, than others. Life can seem like an uphill struggle for many, and depending how we cope with those struggles can mean the different to either a brighter future or a bleak existence. According to (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2013), people that are resilient can usually quickly respond to a traumatic or stressful event by acknowledging the event, then adapt to it and return to normal functions. I consider myself to be somewhat resilient, and fairly more resilient than my peers. I have been lauded on my resilience to work issues during annual performance appraisals and feedbacks with my supervisor.
According to ULifeline, “stress is a burst of energy that basically advises you on what to do. In small doses, stress has many advantages. For instance, stress can help you meet daily challenges and motivates you to reach your goals. In fact, stress can help you accomplish tasks more efficiently. It can even boost memory… [And] help to fortify the immune system.”
Stress is part of our everyday life and not all stress is negative. It affects everyone and no one is excluded but I have extra hard time managing my stress. I get stressed over being a full-time student because I work full-time as well. When you are trying to succeed in school but also have to support your family, it becomes hard to manage. I don’t get enough time to study for a test and complete my assignments. This is a problem because I set a high expectation for myself and any work I do can’t be less than my best. It doesn’t help that my brain overthinks everything but it has its uses. I would stay awake at night because of the overall stress at work and school.
