Stress is a term used by many, is somewhat misunderstood, and often used to describe a negative condition or emotional state. People experience various forms of stress at home, work, in social settings, and when engaged in activities to simply have fun. Police officer’s experience stresses the same as others, but also in ways much different than the average citizen. The dangers, violence, and tragedy seen by officers result in added levels of stress not experienced by the general population. What is stress? Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death, heart disease, cancer, lung problems, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide. Stress is a combination of physical, mental, and emotional feelings that result from pressure, worry, and anxiety. These pressures are called stressors. Some examples of common stressors are, divorce, death in the family, job change, pregnancy, marriage, and retirement. In medicine stress is a physical, chemical, or emotional development that causes strains that lead to physical illness. The early warning signs of stress include apathy, anxiety, irritability, mental fatigue, and over compensation or denial. Some signs of apathy are feelings of sadness or recreation that isn’t fun anymore. Feelings of restlessness, agitation, insecurity and a sense of worthlessness are examples of anxiety. Signs of irritability are feeling hypersensitive, defensive, and arrogant. Feeling argumentative, rebellious, or angry are also signs of irritability. Examples of mental fatigue are denying that there are problems, ignoring symptoms, and feeling suspicious. Some behavioural signs of stress are avoiding things, doing things to extremes, administrative problems, and legal problems. People handle stress in a myriad of ways. It is a love-hate relationship in every sense. Many laugh, cry, become catatonic or frenzied, gamble, hoard, act out or become structured. Stress, and it's perception, can be motivating- or literally a killer.
Throughout life, and as we get older, you will start to notice that people develop worries about various things more then they would at a younger age. For example using money for paying monthly bills, car expenses, and buying groceries is a common cataylst for stress for many adults. Sometimes, they don't even notice it, it may only affect them sub-counsiously. Some people may never notice this, and it may never affect them, however, I've never personally met someone who doesn't experience some form of this "stress". Stress is something everyone goes through no matter what age, gender or race you are. Stress is the experience of a perceived threat to one’s mental, physical or spiritual well-being, resulting from a series of physiological responses and adaptations. Stress is a term with different meaning but in general it involves change and response. The average person doesn’t like change because it takes them out of their comfort zones. As a result stress can cause mental and physical damage. The American Institute of Stress (pg 3) (www.stress.org) states 43 percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. 80 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints or disorders. (pg 3) The leading cause of death are caused by “lifestyle diseases,” for people who have a difficult time coping with stress. Researcher Richard Lazarus (pg 5) describes stress as a state of anxiety produced when events and responsibilities exceed one’s coping abilities.
Stress has been linked to many diseases or malady conditions. Stress hormones that act on the heart, blood vessels, and lungs may contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and asthma (Feldman, 17). Diseases of the stomach and intestines are often associated to stress because blood leaves these organs and moves to muscles used in running and fighting. Another difficulty is the prolonging increase of blood sugar can influence the development of diabetes. Stress also appears to influence the development of cancer.

So what is stress? Stress is a normal physical response that happens when you feel threatened or upset. When you feel that you are in danger whether it is real or imaged. Your body has a response when stress occurs and it is a way of actually protecting you. Many times, stress helps people stay more focussed and energetic.
