My class as it currently operates puts me at the center of the universe and for a variety of reasons I am crushed by students who need my constant assistance every minute of the period. My third grade class at P.S 45 is an ICT class where half of the students are low-functioning and half of the students are general education. My classroom contains 29 children, 15 boys and 14 girls of mixed heritages. The majority of my students are Hispanic and African American; however, there are a few students who are Caucasian and Asian, too. The class consists of many students who have an impulsive tendency of constantly getting out of their seats. When this happens, it breaks the focus of other students and disrupts the lesson. Most students come ready to learn, but some of the students lack focus due to insufficient sleep and nutrition. Being a college student can be very expensive. Especially for a low income student, it is difficult for a student to attend college when they don’t have a financial support. Cypress College has many programs that help low income students. EOPS is a program who helps students with economic problems and educational challenges. The purpose for this program is to help students achieve a higher level of education.

You made a great point. Most of the people who are living in poverty more than likely didn’t graduate from high school. The parents of those students may not have the information nor have been educated on programs that can help their children. I know some parents don’t have information on college and how to apply for scholarships. My sorority started a mentoring program for girls to get them ready for college. It is important that the school counselor and teachers try to get the students involved in these programs and maybe even start one at the school. Support and encouragement is what these students need to move out of poverty. It is great that you are helping your niece out.

My practicum started in the Dragon Class_Child Development Center in Glendale Community College. The class consists of twelve children, twelve teachers and one assistant. Every Thursday after school I go to work at Kumon, which is an after school math and reading program. My shifts usually last for four hours where I mark homework which the students completed and do primary instruction. The ages of the students at Kumon range from 3-15, but as mentioned before I do primary instruction, so I teach students around the age of 3-7. I had previous experience teaching math to my younger sibling and cousins, but soon after starting the job I realized that I would have to adapt a difference approach with teaching the kids at Kumon. In order to fund for my living expenses and education costs as a full time college student, I have been working at this university as a front desk receptionist to the residence halls.
