1.1 Background of the assignment
Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages. Some claim it is the most widely consumed liquid in the world aside from water. Coffee is more than a beverage, however. It is a memory, anticipation, a lifetime of consoling moments of modest pleasure woven into our lives.
Coffee's success as a beverage undoubtedly owes both to the caffeine it harbors and to its sensory pleasure. Coffee lovers come to associate the energizing lift of the caffeine with the richness and aroma of the beverage that delivers it.Coffee is produced from the seeds of a small red (sometimes yellow) fruit that grows on plants halfway in size between shrub and tree. Starbucks mission is to "inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time." Starbucks, founded in the 1970s, opened their first location in 1971 in Seattle’s Pike place. In 1982, Seattle’s Best began to sell to restaurants and coffee bars. In 1987, the company’s name became Starbucks. The same year, stores in Chicago and Canada where opened. In 1988 Starbucks began mail-order sales of their products.
Today Starbucks sells hot and cold beverages, complementary food items, coffee-related accessories and equipment, teas and other non-food products through retail stores in 37 countries. The company operates primarily in the US, is headquartered in Seattle, Washington and employs about 204,000 people. Starbucks has experienced expansion globally, and has created licenses throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, and maintains a 40% market share internationally. The goal of the company is to create brand awareness through the “Starbucks Experience.” This experience translates well, helping folks start their day with an aromatic cup of coffee, pleasant customer service, and each person’s finding a niche while enjoying their favorite drink and listening to music or reading a book.
With time the small industry of coffee has modernized into a multibillion dollar industry that surrounds the world. With the growth of the industry there has been many world wide changes. Over the past 30 years coffee shops have jumped to the front of the public culture. New coffee shops have changes the face of American cities along with British, German, Colombian, Kenyan and Indonesia towns to name few. Without the growth of the industry there would be a shortage of the product and many would have to go without their beloved beverage. In the United States alone there has been a massive increase in the number of coffee shops. In 1980 the number of coffee shops was a year 2,000 and by 2008 there was an astonishing 27,715. The growth of Starbucks is due to the work of Howard Schultz a worker for the company before they became as massive as they are today. Coffee contains many different compounds and not just caffeine alone. Therefore, consumption of coffee results in diverse health outcomes. This means that coffee can have its advantages and disadvantages.

The effect coffee has on people varies between people, the affect one cup of coffee may have on one person wouldn’t be enough to have an effect on another person.
By doing so, I will only consume in extreme situations like where there is a test the next day and I need to consume a coffee in order to build confidence. Coffee relates to my life in terms of relaxation and socialization. By all means, to enjoy the smell and taste of the coffee. Socialization on the other hand means a form of communication to others or just simply interacting with each other. For instance, I used to get a cup of coffee with my mom in a coffee shop.

Although I am no longer pouring beverages, I still find excitement in educating others about their coffee habits.
