Substance abuse began when the Native Americans became in contact with Europeans colonizing in America. This was in the 17th century, and since then Native American substance abuse has grown into a more serious and common problem within their culture. Binge drinking is the most common form of substance abuse among native americans. The heavier the drinking is usually because they are depressed, anxious, or hopeless. A lot of these native americans feel powerless and conflicted, a reason they become so dependent on alcohol. The indigenous North Americans were introduced to alcohol in the 1600s by the British through trade. The British had a goal, they wanted to get a good trade interaction with the Native Americans, for Furs and Skins
