Groenewald and Bhana conducted a study on the view and impact of being a mother of a child who has substance abuse problems. It is without question drugs cause diverse issues in the substance users life, however the individuals in the users’ life can have just as many issues as a result. In this article it focuses on mothers who go through this struggle in silence, to not disclose the difficulties they are having. This study included five mothers who have a child with substance abuse issues. They interviewed each mother in detail about their experience in this environment. Some of the interview questions and answers were written in the article and although the mothers answers were similar, they all had their own personal experiences that …show more content…

Strong, Ensminger and Juons’ article focuses on a study that shows the effect between adolescence who smoke, and the probability they will have substance abuse issues as an adult. This study focuses specifically on African Americans. The study also well emphasizes that there isn’t much data on the correlation, which is why the study is very important. They followed over twelve hundred African Americans adolescents for about forty years. In this sample, it included smokers as well as non smokers. The results were pretty shocking. Adolescent smokers showed a much higher percentage of substance abuse as an adult, especially with more dangerous substances like cocaine, alcohol, and heroin. But what the study also found was that the correlation between finishing school and dropping out also correlated to the likelihood to have a substance abuse issue. (Strong, Ensminger & Juon, 2016)
Focuses on a study that tries to determine if a prevention program that is network based can help reduce high risk substance abuse adolescents.. For their study they selected twenty-five high schools, however only fourteen schools accepted their study. With the study, there were twelve sessions, including forty-seven classes and over eight hundred students. They were then divided two groups, a placebo group, and then a network based group where it was driven by peers and an interactive version. The group who were
Is drug addiction is a disease, not a choice? Or it is a choice and not a disease? Drug Addiction has become a serious issue in society today, with an increase in controversy leading towards the topic of whether drug addiction is a disease or a choice. Addiction and disease are two different things and understanding them is very important when it comes to drugs and how it affects the mind and body. Several people tend to jump the gun and think that drug addiction is a disease, when in fact it is a choice. Some scientists believe that that drug addiction is a disease and to an extent that it makes people powerless to control its prevalence, on the other hand some scientists believe that addiction is a choice and that people have
Baby boomers will certainly remember the onset of the disco era in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was a time when America was in transition and liberal values were taking over the country. It's also the time frame when cocaine became America's drug of choice. As the new drug flowed free in dance clubs all around the country, drug cocaine was the star of the evening. There was no negative stigma associated with people who chose to partake because everyone was doing it and law enforcement couldn't keep up.
Drugs and alcohol is a major social issue (J. David Hawkins, Richard F. Catalano, and Janet Y. Miller, 1992). It is not something that can be solved by the law (Lee P. Brown, 2008). Throughout history, many attempts have been made to try and legalize and control alcohol and drug addiction but has failed.
Surratt in the article, “Gender-Specific Issues in the Treatment of Drug-Involved Women” talks about how women biologically react to drug different and how they often connect treatment recovery and motherhood together (Surratt, p. 349). Surratt suggests that women become addicted to drug much more quickly than men (Surratt, p. 349). However, most treatment does no not focus on women’s recover and the unique forms of treatment they may need for recovery (Surratt, p. 350). Often women feel more guilt than men when battling drug addiction because women are more harshly judged for drug use, especially when she is pregnant or has children (Surratt, p. 351). Surratt looks at the treatment program at Florida State called “The Village”, which has treatment program called Families in Transition for mothers battling addiction and their children under the age of 12 years old (Surratt, p. 352). This allows for the children to live with their mothers while they are receiving treatment (Surratt, p. 352). The author held interviews with some women in the program and almost all attributed treatment with becoming a good mother for their children (Surratt, p. 353). Many of the women who were battling with addiction had family members who were addicts or had some form of childhood or domestic abuse (Surratt, p. 355). Treatment for these women needs to be more complex than your typical user because they have many layers of issues to over come. This program did not include the
When referring to quality of life for an individual with substance abuse, also referred to as substance use disorder (SUD), through practice and research, the nurse is able to identify, test, and apply interventions that promote quality of life (QOL). According to Lubkin and Larsen (2013), “Application of research findings to an individual’s quality of life enables nurses in clinical practice to plan and deliver evidence-based care” (p. 183). With the use of evidence base practice, the nursing interventions can be individualized to the preferences and values of the client, which will ensure better adherence to along term commitment plan. Quality of life assessments can be used to evaluate the impact of substance abuse on the client and their
Hallucinogens act as sympathomimetic agents, producing effects resembling those resulting from stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (e.g., excitation, increased energy, distortion of the senses). Therapeutic medical uses for lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) have been proposed in the treatment of chronic alcoholism and in the reduction of intractable pain, such as terminal malignant disease and phantom limb sensations. At this time there is no real evidence of the safety and efficacy of the drug in humans. Examples: LSD, mescaline, phencyclidine (PCP).
For many years now, we have heard about the controversy of chemically addicted mothers and the detrimental effects is has on their children and unborn fetus. Social norms quickly label mothers as unacceptable or inadequate. In conclusion, the variables that exist within the issue of elderly substance abuse and misuse are multifaceted. Although many medications both prescribed and illicit have the potential to lead to addiction, some are more prevalently abused than others. Per a study done by
The substance use issue in America is a commonly heard and discussed topic throughout the nation. Even the smallest and most vulnerable members of our society are also being affected by the drug epidemic. Addicted women who are becoming pregnant are leaving their children with a lasting reminder of how drugs can affect everyone involved in a user’s life. These infants are exposed in utero to substances and once born, the children can have immediate and sometimes long-lasting effects of their mother’s actions. Often women who become pregnant are worried that if they reach out for help, their children will be taken from them after birth. There needs to be a better way to address this issue and work towards a solution for expecting mothers who
Whip let these issues get the best of him and realized when things had to come to an end. Whip tried to control his addictions 7 days before his testimony and he failed himself. When things like this happens that’s when drug addiction camp comes a long and rehab. He was sentenced to jail time and over the year he had become sober. He had to face the truth in order for him to actually help himself.
This research was conducted on mothers of adolescents with substance abuse problems. It was reported that two-thirds of women with mental health problems are mothers (Beaudoin et al., 2013, p. 30). There were 199 adolescents were invited to take part in this study and only 147 adolescents participated in the study. The breakdown of the participants were: 40% girls and 60%
Infelicitously, for many, pain is numbed by the ephemeral fine-tune of drugs, alcohol, or a process (comportment) addiction. This results in a spiral of numbing, followed by culpability, shame, and even more unpleasant feelings. In many cases, substance use leads to even more traumatic experiences. Often, this eventually leads to substance dependence, and
Cocaine abuse has been a persistent health problem worldwide for many years (Platt, 2002). Adults aged 18 to 25 year have a higher rate of current cocaine use than any other age group, with 1.5 percent of young adults reporting past month cocaine use (The Science of Drug Abuse & Addiction , 2013). Every drug has a history as to how it came about, also, as to why it is used and or abused among adults. Each drug has its own chemical make-up, along with how that drug works in the human body. Treatment of cocaine addiction must be comprehensive, and strategies need to assess the neurobiological, social, and medical aspects of the patient’s drug abuse (The Science of Drug Abuse & Addiction , 2013). Due to the treatment intensity, how willing one
