There are many different understandings of what success is. Some relate success to money, others relate success to happiness, but it all depends on the type of person.

The definition of success differs from person to person. According to the “Poolside” Cadillac commercial, success is having a large house, nice family and a new car. How is that success accomplished? According to the mainstream media, success is achieved through hard work and perseverance. Not by taking extravagant vacations, or working for only a few hours a day. Success for others on the other hand could be having a large amount of free time. The media gives examples of what they think success is, but ultimately it’s up to the person to decide what is success is.

Success is a relative term. To a wealthy CEO, success is making his business one million in sales that day. To a child living on the streets, eating dinner that day is a success. What someone might not see though is that the child can teach the businessman a thing or two about about how to live life: humility. Realising that there is more to life than monetary gains, some people just need to appreciate meeting their basic needs. Furthermore, this easy lesson of humility provides the people living in wealth with a sense of how privileged they are.

Former president Barack Obama once said, “If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress” (Brainy). When Thomas Jefferson first signed the Declaration of Independence, the United States was far from united; however, the first 100 years of the United States’ existence changed everything. The United States was able to overcome immense challenges as a new nation and come together to become one of the most succesfull powers the world has ever seen. When watching a television show, anyone might see success being portrayed as someone being wealthy, having fancy materialistic items and goes on great vacations. Yes, that might be true in certain opinions but not in every case. My extraordinary father, Matt Mills, is successful, not only in being able to support his family but, also in regards to being a role model for everyone around him. How do we measure “success” in relation to an American society? , The answer isn't really definitive. I would say that the meaning of success varies depending on who you ask. To some, success can simply mean, being the best at something. To others, success is measured on some sort of accomplishment (for example: getting honours in school or receiving a promotion). Everyday, we search through the web and news stations, looking to see who “made it” and set our goals to either meet or go farther than them. We praise those who are successful and usually disregard those who aren't.

My answer always consists of two words; fulfilled purpose! A person’s success cannot be measured by anything or anyone outside of that. The way you can determine if a person, place or thing is successful, is to consider whether or not he, she or it has fulfilled the purpose for which they were created. A refrigerator is successful if it keeps food fresh during its expected life span, a piano is successful when it’s played, a heart is successful when it beats, and the list goes on. So I want you to understand that your success is not based on how far you go across the world, how many people you impact, how much money you make, or how popular you become. Your success is determined by whether or not you fulfilled your purpose in its fullness. It is very important we understand this, because if we attempt to measure success by any other means, we will either come up short of believing we are successful, or stop ourselves short because we have wrongly measured. Also I'll know I'm successful when I can finally say '' I did it'' and feel good about it knowing that all that hard work and stress payed off. Working at a job that I'm really passionate about even though it doesn't pay much is success. People tend to study for things that make high income even though they completely hate it. For example I always wanted to become a homicide detective usually it's hard for a female to become a detective because it's usually a man's job. Usually detectives don't get payed much but it's not about the money it's about helping others in my community and most importantly doing what I love.
