Kim’s Convenience, written by Ins Choi, is about a family oriented man, Appa, whose personal objectives do not coincide with those he loves the most. Throughout the play we learn that he moved his family from Korea to Canada, ultimately to acquire a better quality of life for his family, securing a sound future for his daughter Janet. Though his intentions are honourable, Appa’s family does not share the same aspirations leading to family adversity. Adversity forces an individual to stay true to themselves and adapt to new situations in order to live a successful life. Hardships is something we all face and it’s effect on people cannot be defined. One can be created or destroyed by these effects. Immigrating to Canada from Korea, Appa had to hurdle a language barrier, homesickness, and the struggle to make something of himself in an unfamiliar situation. Though he worked long tiring hours, he maintained a positive outlook, overcoming his fatigue, aware of his family’s struggle for success if he did not work hard. Forming the foundation of his identity, Appa overcame these obstacles, creating the legacy of Kim’s Convenience. Kim’s Convenience follows Appa’s relationship with his family, his daughter Janet in particular. Spoiled by her father’s achievements, Janet does not seem to understand the concept of sacrifice. As the play progresses it becomes evident that Appa’s headstrong daughter wants to carry out her own dreams of being a photographer rather than following his dreams of her continuing to run the family business. Appa explains to Janet the true importance of Kim’s Convenience. “What is my story? My whole life is this store. Everybody knows this store, they know me. This store is my story.
