In the introduction, it is apparent by Dr. Kenneth Sufka comments that how you studied in high school will probably not work in college. However, much of what he observed in college students is easily fixed. Also, what he saw and made into guidelines is applicable to all students across the globe and not to just one in particular. All of these rules can most certainly bring your grades up and make you into a better student. Specifically, they will turn you into a better studier and test-taker. In all, it is beneficial to learn the rules he has set. In Chapter One, his first rule is to “go to class-always” (11). Dr. Sufka is trying to emphasize even if your friend did take notes, they are not what you would have done. As individuals, we all make notes differently, because our brains function diversely. One person may like to just have one full page of notes, which may be fine for them. Meanwhile, their friend likes to add bullets for better symmetry. Overall, Dr. Sufka emphasizes the importance of going to class, and he also notes there are not many excuses that can be made as to why you would not. In Chapter Two, his second rule is to “never sit in cheap seats” (15). The seats he is referring to would be the ones in the back of the class. They cause you to not pay attention in class, …show more content…
First, Dr. Sufka begins by mentioning how important it is to read textbook chapters before coming to class. When you do that, it helps prepare you for the lecture topic, and it may enlighten you on words or phrases you may not already know. Second, you need to go to class feeling terrific, or you could get distracted and miss key ideas during the lecture. Dr. Sufka emphasizes recording lectures, so if you cannot copy down notes fast enough you can look at them later. In summary, you will make better test grades if you get ahead of your professor by knowing the material fairly well before going to your next
The first step to successfully study for any type of material is to keep the material organized and make sure the information is correct. A good routine would be to check notes periodically
In some circles, failure to plan is more often than not likened to planning to fail. As I have already pointed out in the introductory section, preparing for tests should begin way before the actual exam or test taking period. Indeed, in the opinion of Gardner, Jewler and Barefoot (2008), "believe it or not, you actually begin preparing for a test on the first day of the term." According to the authors, all the assigned readings as well as lecture notes should constitute an important part of this very preparation. It is however important to note that although having well-organized lecture notes and completing all the assigned readings before sitting an exam does not guarantee an individual success in the same; it surely does give one a head start prior to the exam period.
The first step to learning physics starts with the student and their self-discipline. The hardest part is getting a study routine to follow religiously, this will ensure no cramming will be done the night before the exam, and a better understanding of the material. Subsequently, will be reading the material before you attend lecture. Reading the material is what students most frequently slack off on. Since reading can’t be graded, and most engineers tend to stray from reading and writing as much as possible, the theory behind physics gets lost. The reading will determine the big picture of the chapter you are studying. When reading the student should search for unfamiliar words and concepts, so that in lecture the student already knows the definition and can focus on the theory and how it is applicable. Finally, the student must make sure he/she does their homework and practices example problems from the text. Steven Johnson at Bemidji State University says, doing homework will develop a routine for the specific problem. Since physics is a problem solving course there is certain to be a routine to follow, the trick is already knowing the routing before the exam. If a student has the ability to rigorously follow a routine, they can pass one of the hardest classes in
This is especially true for online classes. Simply sitting in class and listening to the professor (or accessing online materials) could be enough.
Like a wise man once said “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.” That is what we are celebrating here today, today is the end of a chapter, but the beginning of a new one. Whats great about this chapter is that it hasn't been written yet. We get to choose what goes into this chapter, but we can't write new things if we are living in the past. It may not be easy to say good bye, but moving on is a part of life, before we go into writing this new chapter, lets take a look at some of the best moments in these past 10 years at Holden.
Once again, numbers have surprised me with their surprisingly complex simplicity. In this passage of Taming the Infinite: The story of mathematics from numbers to chaos theory, the author writes about a vast array of topics, including number theory, prime numbers, calculus, many mathematicians, among many others.
Labunski, a professor, believes that student only chooses to learn the information given to them that will be presented on the exam and ignore learning the rest. I personally do this because I see it as a waste of time but I completely understand why he thinks this. He states that “grades are supposed to reflect what they learn and are not the goal of a college education” (Labunski). By just focusing on the information one needs to receive a good grade they miss out on the information they might need in their actual job place. However, if the professors gave a reasonable amount of work it would be more likely to occur but they do give a lot of work which leaves the students with limited time. The only part I disagree with in this document is when Labunski begins to speak about how grades are not important at all. Sure an employer is not going to go looking through all of ones grades, they are just going to see that they got a specific degree or the see the outside activities that one participated in. But what about people earning money because of the grades they make; at this point, they are very important and can be life altering. If one does not make the grades they would lose the money and that would mean more for them to pay
To master class material, I have found it useful to learn what I can by myself, then talk with other students about their ideas. By reading notes and starting to work on assignments by myself, I can begin to learn what I do and do not understand about class material. When I work on comprehending the material on my own I follow a process. I begin by reading sections of the textbook uninterrupted. Once finished, I write down what I understood in my notes. Then I go back into the book and look for key words. If I feel they are of importance, I will write down the term and a brief definition. If I come across a direct quote I would like to include in my notes I write them in blue ink and note the page number I found the quote on. I let time pass and then I usually go back through my notes. By this time if I still do not understand something, I will go to one of my classmates and ask them for help. Once I discuss the material and assignments with other students, I know what I need help with. My classmates give me their
Just like Gregor Samsa, the protagonist from Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka had an incredibly similar life. Kafka was born on July 3, 1883 in Bohemia, now known as Prague in Czech Republic. He was raised in a middle class Jewish family; however, due to the fact that Jews were seen as an uneducated and inferior race his father taught them (Kafka and his two sisters) German. Just like Mr. Samsa (Gregor’s father), Kafka’s father also owned a business which he wanted Kafka to take over; nonetheless, Kafka refused and decided to become a lawyer but later obtained a job with an insurance company (which would require him to travel a lot). Throughout his life Kafka was shaped by several elements, such as his complicated relationship with his father and his life as a Jew, which would motivate him to write such vivid stories where he was able to successfully create meaningful literatures that portrayed and identified several issues that were occurring in society and his life. Even though Franz Kafka wrote Metamorphosis in 1912, it took him three years to finally publicize this magnificent piece of work. This story is basically about a salesman whom one day wakes up as a bug, as a result several dynamics and issues take place. Many scholars agree to the fact that this story highly mirrors his own personal life, however, many of them also agree to disagree on the morals and themes that take
Everybody wants good grades and these simple steps will help you achieve better grades. All you need is a textbook, good attitude, confidence that you will do well, a good place to study, pencil, paper, flash cards, and a study partner but that is optional. Having good grades is always important especially if you are trying to get scholarships for college.
I am an average highschool student who has decent grades who is generally in the 3.0-3.5 GPA range. I am not like not like some students who really put in the effort of studying, I will write notes if its an assignment, but I usually go based off on memory at best I’ll go over and read my notes once. If I use the strategies of flashcards, music, and rewriting I will more likely be able to to be successful.
To achieve good grades in high school a person must be disciplined in their study habits. Once a person reaches high school these habits must be ingrained into the personality of the young person so that they are second nature or it is to late.
The classes I have taken have taught me how I learn the best and how to study more effectively. Many students are verbal learners, meaning they learn best by listening to material given to them. I, on the other hand, learn best by doing the activity myself. I never knew this fact about myself until after a very brutal physcology class. Also, college is said to be all memorization. I now know from experience that to pass and receive the degree being chased after, good study habits are a must. The very first test I took in college, I failed miserably. Being able to study in an effective way for an individual is the main way to keep the grades
Besides, I have the problem to find the key points and important facts during the lectures, and I am wasting my time writing down the points which not necessary. I cannot see the overall concept which the lectures try to deliver and the important ideas. I don’t want this to be a problem for me anymore as it may affect my study and my concentration during lecture time. So I make a step to seek and think what the main concept is, and I try relating all the ideas of the course so that I can see clearly the overall picture and understand the topics that I learn. I also read the notes and make an effort to understand the lesson that will teach before going to the lecture. This helps me to give the overall idea of new topic that I will learn.
The vast majority of successful students nowadays get to the top because they developed and applied good studying habits. According to Broni and Hogrey (2010) as cited in the study entitled “The Effect of Study Habits on the Academic Performance of English for Academic Writing” stated that having a good study habits could help every students to improve their academic performance. In addition, many researchers had conducted a study and concluded that study habits and academic performance move in the same direction. It only means that when a student performs well, their academic performance will appreciably be improved. Moreover, According to Reed (n.d), good and effective study habits that are practiced regularly by highly effective students includes taking down notes during discussions, and it was very essential in studying because through the notes taken it is easier to study and remember facts that are important in the previous lesson. According to the study entitled “Good study Habits”, Reading textbooks or material, performing advance reading prior to class, listening attentively during classes and working with homework every time should also be
